Salzgitter: Archiv der Stadt Salzgitter Recent studies in the final Palaeolithic of the European plain: proceedings of a UISPP Symposium, Stockholm, 14-17 October 1999. In Palaeolithic archaeology, most of the momentous discoveries and publications of the last few years fall outside or at the boundaries of Europe. So is Europe now being relegated to the periphery of a global discipline? Despite the problems in resolution and reliability of data from old excavations, Europe is still distinguished by the richness of its evidence and a disproportionately high share of the economic and intellectual resources of Palaeolithic archaeology. This allows for the continent to act as an international intellectual arena for Palaeolithic archaeologists from all theoretical and methodological backgrounds. This multiplicity of approaches, often used to analyse and interpret the same datasets, and the continuous application of new questions, methods and ideas, enables Europe to retain its unique position within Palaeolithic archaeology, even if most of the 'hot' new finds come from elsewhere.

Reviews When did the Indo-Europeans enter the lands that they occupied during historical times? And, more specifically, when did the Greeks come to Greece? Robert Drews brings together the evidencehistorical, linguistic, and archaeologicalto tackle these important questions. Reviews: "Into the ever-tangled and speculative debate on Indo-European origins comes this excellent book: lucid, critical, and refreshingly sober."D. F. Easton, The Classical Review "The fact that [a] pattern of localized Near Eastern takeovers coincides with the inception of chariot warfare, coupled with his carefully documented hypothesis that Proto-Indo-European-speaking (PIE) peoples in Armenia were responsible for the development and spread of chariot warfare, serves as the backdrop to Drews's innovative scenario for the arrival of the Greeks.... Such complete Near Eastern analogies involving archaeology, mythology, and linguistics, for example, have been rarely applied to support theories of PIE dispersal.... His research serves the critical function of provoking new views of a long-standing problem."Susan N. Skomal, American Journal of Archaeology Endorsement: "An archaeological and linguistic whodunnit of the most fascinating sort, courageously tackling a much-argued problem from several disciplines at once.... No one dealing with the dispersal of the Indo-Europeans can ignore this book."Elizabeth Wayland Barber, Occidental College

    Marija Gimbutas
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Marija Gimbutas (Vilnius, Lithuania 1921 - Los Angeles February 2, ) researched the Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures of " Old Europe ", a term she introduced, in works published between 1946 and 1971, that opened new views by combining traditional spadework, linguistics and mythology. Professor of Archaeology at UCLA from 1963 to 1989, she researched and documented an enormous amount of archaeological findings and by happenstance dug deeper, below the known surface to unearth an overwhelming number of art and daily life objects of Neolithic cultures of Europe. Gimbutas earned a reputation as a world-class specialist on the Indo-European Bronze Age as well as on Lithuanian folk art and the prehistory of the Balts and the Slavs , partly summed up in the definitive Bronze Age Cultures of Central and Eastern Europe (1965), but she gained unexpected fame with her last three books: The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe The Language of the Goddess The Civilization of the Goddess (1991), which presented an overview of Neolithic cultures across Europe: housing patterns, social structure, art, religion and the nature of literacy. The book articulated the differences between the goddess-centered Old European system and the Bronze Age Indo-European patriarchal cultural elements, which fused to form the classical European societies.
