THOMAS V. Gamkrelidze and V. V. IVANOV are the authors of The IndoEuropean Language and the Indo-Europeans, a two-volume work published in Russian in 1984; an English version is published by Mouton de Gruyter. Gamkrelidze directs the Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies in Tbilisi and is a professor of linguistics at Tbilisi State University. Ivanov is professor of linguistics and chair of the department of Slavic languages at the Institute for Slavic and Balkan Studies in Moscow. The authors wish to thank Gerard Piel, chairman emeritus of Scientific Arnerican, for helping to prepare this article for publication.
FAMILY TREE
of the Indo-European languages
The common ancestor of these languages has been traced to Asia rather than to Europe, the authors say. The once-clear distinction between the family's Eastern and Western branches is now blurred M igrations and Cultural Diffusion carried the Indo-European protolanguage from the homeland, which the authors place in the Transcaucasus (see Historical Armenia maps), and fragmented it into dialects. Some spread west to Anatolia and Greece, others southwest to Iran and India. Most Western languages stem from an Eastern branch that rounded the Caspian Sea. Contact with Semitic languages in Mesopotamia and with Kartvelian languages in the Caucasus led to the adoption of many foreign words.

    Archaeology and the Near East
The Near East: Ancient and Modern
Map: Ancient Near East The territorial terms "Near East," "Middle East" and "Far East" take as their given a Western European standpoint. Generally speaking, Near East refers to lands surrounding the Eastern Mediterranean: Asia Minor (or Anatolia), Syria and Palestine, the Sinai Peninsula and Arabia, sometimes Egypt and parts of North Africa. Middle East designates the lands extending across the Tigris and Euphrates rivers: Persia and Mesopotamia. Far East includes Central Asia, China, Japan, etc. Thus, "Asia" and the "Orient" are very broad designations indeed. Accordingly, the history of the Near East encompasses a vast array of temporally overlapping cultures. The dominant politico-cultural groups of ancient Near Eastern history are the Sumerians, the Babylonians, the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Hittites, the Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans. Mediaeval history traces the rise of the monotheistic politico-religious superpowers: the Christian Byzantine Empire; the Islamic Arab dynasties; and the Islamic Turkish Ottoman Empire. The Byzantine Empire, at various times during its millenium-long lifespan, from the 4th to the 15th centures A.C., controlled or influenced much of the Near East as well as Greece, Serbia and the Balkans, and Eastern Europe. Control over much of this territory was taken, first, by the Arab dynasties, and ultimately, in the 15th century, by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire flourished into modern times, ending only after World War I.

    Contemporary Review
    Feb, 1999 by Norman Berdichevsky
Colin Renfrew. Pimlico. [pounds]12.50 p.b. 346 pages. ISBN 0-7126-6612-5. Colin Renfrew has wisely subtitled this inquisitive and controversial book: 'The Puzzle of Indo-European Origins', for the puzzle remains although there is much fascinating detective work which only succeeds in casting doubt on what was the generally accepted solution. As recently as this reviewer's own graduate student days, the question of Indo-European origins was answered in standard anthropology and geography textbooks such as The European Culture Area by Terry G. Jordan. There was a clear-cut reference to either East-Central Europe or the Russian steppes as identified by Paelolinguistics and the assumed existence of a Proto-European/Aryan tongue and mass migrations from an original heartland. The 'proof' was the vocabulary of common 'Proto-European' words describing objects, animals, seasons and trees such as 'river', 'winter', 'cold', 'wolf', 'bear', 'oak', 'pine', 'beech', 'willow', 'plow', 'ox', 'sheep', 'apple' and the small grains common to a mid-latitude land of pronounced seasons. Mr Renfrew decisively succeeds in establishing that this theory 'ain't necessarily so' but does not provide us with any more convincing alternative suspects. There are plenty of suspicions but no proof.
