By Hoag Levins THE PINEAPPLE has served as both a food and a symbol throughout the human history of the Americas. Originally unique to the Western Hemisphere, the fruit was a culinary favorite of the fierce Carib Indians who lived on islands in the sea that still bears their name. Indian Migration and Commerce The presence of pineapples on Caribbean islands was not a natural event, but rather the result of centuries of indian migration and commerce. Accomplished dugout canoe navigators, the maritime tribes explored, raided and traded across a vast expanse of tropical oceans, seas and river systems. The herbaceous plant they called "anana," or "excellent fruit," originally evolved in the inland areas of what is now Brazil and Paraguay and was widely transplanted and cultivated. Highly regarded for its intense sweetness, the "excellent fruit" was a staple of indian feasts and rites related to tribal affirmation. It was also used to produce Indian wine. Christopher Columbus The first encounter between a European and a pineapple occurred in November, 1493, when Christopher Columbus, on his second voyage to the Caribbean region, lowered anchor in a cove off the lush, volcanic island of Guadaloupe and went ashore to inspect a deserted Carib village. There, amidst parrot-flecked jungle foliage and wooden pillars spiraled with serpent carvings, his crew came upon cook pots filled with human body parts. Nearby were piles of freshly gathered vegetables and fruits, including pineapples. The European sailors ate, enjoyed and recorded the curious new fruit which had an abrasive, segmented exterior like a pine cone and a firm interior pulp like an apple.

General guilty in Algeria war case
Aussaresses: 3,000 disappeared was "not a lot" PARIS, France An 83-year-old former French general has been convicted of trying to justify the use of torture during the Algerian war and fined $6,500. In a case that forced France to revisit the darker moments of its recent past, Gen. Paul Aussaresses, was convicted for "complicity in justifying war crimes" in connection with comments he wrote about the seven-year war that ended in 1962. He was not on trial for his actions during the war, which ended with Algeria's independence. The case was brought after Aussaresses wrote a book detailing methods of torture used against prisoners under his command ranging from blows to electricity to suffocation with water and said France's top leaders were aware of the practice. General faces Algeria war verdict
Aussaresses: 3,000 disappeared was "not a lot" PARIS, France The verdict is due in the trial of an ageing French general who admitted torturing and killing Algerians during the war of independence. Paul Aussaresses, 83, wrote a book detailing his role in the death of prisoners during the conflict. Human rights groups in Paris wanted to prosecute Aussaresses for war crimes, but that was impossible because of a 1968 amnesty relating to the Algerian war. Instead they have brought an action under a rarely invoked law that makes it a punishable offence to try to justify war crimes. COUNTRY PROFILE At a glance: Algeria Provided by CountryWatch.com During the trial, which was held last November, Aussaresses, 83, told the court in Paris the killings were carried out "without pleasure." He also said that for 3,000 prisoners to disappear out of a total of 24,000 detained was "not a lot."

Chechen president says reports of truce reports 'false'
January 29, 2000
Web posted at: 5:11 a.m. EST (1011 GMT) In this story: Russian losses rising quickly Pressure mounts to end fighting RELATED STORIES, SITES From staff and wire reports GROZNY, Russia Chechen President Aslan Mashadov denied Saturday that a truce had been agreed between his rebel forces and Russian-led units fighting for control of the half-ruined Chechen capital Grozny. MESSAGE BOARD The battle for Chechnya Interfax had earlier reported that the commander of a pro-Russian Chechen militia, Bislan Gantamirov, had agreed a truce with some rebel commanders that would lead to some rebels leaving Grozny early on Saturday.
