General Information about Geography
Poland is one of the larger countries in Europe (the land area 312, 638 sq. km making it the 9th largest country in Europe and the 66th in the world). The country is situated in very hart of Europe. It has a two-level administrative division: first is divided into 49 voivodships, which are then divided into 2,459 communes. The territory of Poland is compact and resembles a circle it lies in the basin of the Vistula (the longest Polish river - 1047 km) and Oder rivers, in the European Lowland and between the Baltic Sea and the arc of the Carpathian Mountains. Farthest to the south lies Oplonek Peak. Farthest to the north is the Rozewie Cape. The major historical cities like Warsaw, Cracow, Sandomierz, Kazimierz, Plock, Torun and Gdansk were built along the Vistula river. Modern architecture coexists with historical quarters that, like the Old towns in Warsaw and Gdansk, Cracow's center, and the market places of Kazimierz and Sandomierz, remember times from eight centuries ago. With recent changes in this part of continent Poland's neighbors are: to the east and north-east - Russia, Lithuania, Belorussia and Ukraine; to the south - Czech and Slovakia, and Germany to the west.

Approximately 130,500 square miles (338,000 sq. km), Finland is similar in size to the state of Montana. However, it is narrower and longer with 690 miles (1100 km) stretching between its southern and northern tips. Thousands of islands and small cliffs dot the southern and southwestern coast of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Åland, the most recognizable set of islands, is located between Finland and Sweden and boasts more than 6,500 isles and islands. Many important relics of the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages have been found there. .

Geography
Bulgaria is situated in Southeastern Europe in a crossroad between Europe, Asia and Africa. It borders the Black Sea to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, Serbia and the F.Y.R.O.M. to the west and Romania to the north. The country occupies a total area of 110 910 sq km. The climate is temperate continental, tending to Mediterranean in the southern region, with 4 seasons - cold damp winters and hot dry summers, mild autumns and short rainy springs. This enables you to travel all-the-year round. The relief of Bulgaria varies. The mountaineous areas predominate, occupying almost one quarter of the country's territory. The Balkan Range or Stara Planina cross the country from west to east dividing Bulgaria into 2 almost equal parts. The southern part is mostly occupied by the mountains Pirin, Rila (with Mussala, the highest peak of the Balkan Pensinsula - 2925 m) and Rhodopi which form a large massif. To the north lies the biggest Bulgarian lowlands area, the Danubean plate. Small and fertile valleys are spread between the Balkan Range and its lower sub-mountains. The most famous of the them is the Rose Valley where the rose oil is produced.

Ph.D. Pracoviste c. katedra socialni geografie a regionalniho rozvoje Course for Socrates/Erasmus students and optional for departmental MA students This course is concerned with the current post-communist part of Europe and its reintegration into the larger setting of the whole continent and in the context of globalisation processes. Since the 1989 fall of the communist regimes, the Czech Republic and the other countries of post-communist Europe are striving to come in terms with political and economic transformation and ethnonational identities. The post-communist part of the continent is involved in modernization and reintegration largely orchestrated by the European Union. Nevertheless, the importance of ethnonational, political and economic diversity at regional level is enduring. The course proceeds from a regional viewpoint and will acquaint the student with essential facts of the heritage of ethnonational identities, post-1989 state fragmentation and recent regional development in the Czech Republic and across post-communist Europe, and with issues of anticipated eastern enlargement of the EU. Week 1 Introduction: redrawing the map of post-communist Europe readings: EMERSON, M. (1998): Redrawing the Map of Europe. London, Macmillan Press, pp. viii-43.

Clickable Map: Belgium with major cities; thick black lines denote the language border separating the 3 regions: Brussels in the center, Flanders in the Northern half, Wallonia in the Southern half; thin lines delimit provinces Belgium is a small, highly developed and densely populated country (10 million of inhabitants) at the cross-roads of Western Europe. Belgium is one of the founding members of the European Community, and its capital, Brussels, is also the capital of the European Union . It is a federal state , with 3 relatively autonomous regions: Flanders in the north, where the language is Dutch ("Flemish"), Wallonia in the south, where the language is French, and the centrally located Brussels , which is officially bilingual. Belgium's rich history has left impressive churches, town halls, castles and works of art, dating back to the early Middle Ages, spread around the cities and country-side. Belgium has possibly the highest "quality of life" in the world, as testified by its excellent food , housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty, and the appreciation of foreigners residing in Belgium. A good geographer is the epitome of a good generalist. The General Concentration is designed for the student who wants a broad but structured overview of geography. It also allows for the development of competency in a particular region, in a topical sub-discipline, or in geographic techniques. The concentration is appropriate for students simply curious about the world or those wishing the flexibility to pursue either a variety of careers or a graduate degree in geography, or, perhaps, wanting to join the Peace Corps. After completing the core courses, each student designs a coherent and focused program in studies in consultation with is/her advisor.
Curriculum
GEOGRAPHY CORE COURSES: Physical Geography, Human Geography, Map Interpretation, World Geography (Europe and the Americas or Africa and Asia), and one 200-level regional course chosen by the student. REQUIRED GEOGRAPHY COURSES: a second 200-level regional course, 3 topical courses, and 1 geographic techniques course. OTHER REQUIRED COURSES: two additional 200-level or higher geography courses of the student's choice and three 200-level or higher courses from fields related to geography and the student's focus.
