Manners are constantly changing from one century or one generation to the next. For example, a handshake originally was meant to show that men were not carrying a sword or dagger in their hands. Men still tip their hats because once knights in armor lifted the visors of their helmets to show their faces. And it wasn't too many years ago that a man almost always got up in a crowded bus and gave his seat to a woman. Nevertheless, certain manners do survive from one decade to the next, and this is because manners make life easier for everybody.

Headlines Viewpoints Apologetics EXTRA! ... Encouragement Manners-to-Go, Please Written by Zan Tyler The Number One Reason for Private Education I was shocked. Our society has become so rude and ill-behaved that this desire for manners has superceded academics. Parents increasingly want an education for their children that will not only educate the mind, but will train the heart and encourage good behavior as well. Homeschooling and the Development of Manners An American Dictionary of the English Language Our family has always incorporated manners training into our school day, both formally and informally. This type of training becomes extremely important as your children reach the age where they begin applying for jobs, internships, and college entrance. I have impressed upon all three of my children that good manners will not only keep them out of trouble, but will often open the doors to invaluable opportunities in the real world. Do you want to instill manners into the lives of your children, but you are not sure where to start? Would you like to read a book together as a family that will discuss how to handle a variety of social situations? Would you like to give your children some training that will increase their poise and benefit their careers for years to come? June Hines Moore, a nationally recognized author and consultant on social and business etiquette, has developed a wonderful series of manners and etiquette resources that you can easily use in your home. These books will not only enable you to teach your children good manners, but will instill in your children a biblical understanding of manners.

by Sylvia Hemme "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." I Corinthians 13:11 T eaching a child proper manners as he grow, helps him fulfill this verse's mandate — acting less and less like a child and more and more like an adult. While we should not expect children to act like miniature adults, we can expect them to learn age-appropriate behaviors. As a home-school mom I am especially conscious of how my children behave, not just in public where they may be the only example of a home-schooled child that people In my area see, but also in my home where we spend many more hours together than the average American family. I want those hours to be pleasant ones where peace and grace are promoted. When my two boys were very active toddlers, I did not have the energy to try and teach them manners. I knew they should be saying "please" and "thank you," but for the time being it was easier for me to say it for them — as I chased them around the play-ground, pulled them off the kitchen counters, spanked their hands as they went for the electrical socket, and generally just tried to keep up with them. However, when they got a little older (and I was able to catch my breath) I plunged into the manner's thing." After much reiterating on my part and practicing on their part, I am happy to say they are fairly well-mannered boys.

by Heidi Hoff Your child has been invited to yet another birthday party. Gone are the days when she required you to stick around for the entire party and now tells you that you can leave the second you drop her off at the door. You secretly hope she remembers her manners and doesn’t take over the gift opening from the birthday child. The only thing you can really do though, is to go over a few basic rules, maybe engage in a bit of role play and then let her go!
Here is a basic list of manners your child should know when attending a birthday party:
Make sure your child says hello to the parents as soon as she’s arrived. That way, they know she’s there and may not have to wait for anyone else in order to get the party started.
Have your child take off his or her shoes when entering the house.
If there is no designated area to put the gift, your child should ask where he could place it.
Remind your child that she is to be on her best behavior when she’s a guest at another person’s home. She should use her inside voice if indoors and not yell, scream or be obnoxious.

Customer Reviews 365 Manners Kids Should Know : Games, Activities, and Other Fun Ways to Help Children Learn Etiquette Good for the kids, and the adults
We have had this book for about a month now, and we have been thoroughly enjoying it. My stepdaughter really enjoys the lessons, but of course it does not make her manners great. While we learn the ideas of new manners, the old ones go out the window unless they are constantly reinforced. Overall, this book is nice as we see improvement and an awareness of how we all can be more pleasant to others, and that the basis of manners is making others like to be around us. This book is great for those of us who have been brought up with manners, but it can be very frustrating when we try to enforce some of the more old-fashioned manners and other adults tell us (in front of the children) that "it's okay" or whatever. When I tell my stepdaughter to call adults Mr. and Mrs. So-And-So and then those adults say not to, that bothers me. Or if I tell my stepdaughter not to push to get in front of adults and they say "that's okay", that bothers me too. It seems that manners are not expected of children these days and I guess that is why we don't see them so often. Plus it takes guts for we adults who believe in manners at all ages to stand up to adults who don't expect manners from children!

My 5 year old son enjoys listening to stories, and the selection of old and new stories in this book is great. Stories that teach a lesson are valuable in developing a childs character, and the stories in this book are all very positive and helpful in teaching a child how to behave in various situations. Teaching your children how to behave in public is not easy. For many parents it requires a lifetime worth of work. Youre constantly on the lookout for behavior that you dont deem appropriate or nice. And you need to let them know when you dont approve of their behavior. The best things you can do is to set strict rules about behavior. Let your children know how theyre supposed to behave. If you see them behaving in a way that you dont approve of, set limits. Be sure to say no immediately after you witness the bad behavior, and have fun with it. bodyOffer(24304) You dont want to come across as a meany, or your children may not respond as favorably. If they feel as if theyve been completely scolded, theyll be depressed and may not learn as well from the situation. You need to make it seem like good behavior is fun. Make a game out of good behavior and be playful about learning how theyre supposed to act. Children have a natural unwillingness to share. This can be one of the most difficult character traits to teach a child. You want to begin teaching your child to share at an early age. Encourage your child to share whenever shes playing with a sibling, with you, or with another child. Anytime its playtime, make it share time, as well. If your child is used to playing not just in the room with other children, but also WITH other children, that will make it easier to learn sharing.
