Teaching Child Manners
Teaching child manners is a gradual process. It can take many reminders before your child learns to say "Would you please pass the butter?" But if you set a good example, and are patient and try not to get frustrated with your kids, they will eventually learn. Teaching child manners is also an ongoing process. You may feel you've succeeded in teaching your 5-year-old certain important manners. But when she's 8, she suddenly becomes more surly and rude. You have to continue to emphasize the same messages. Compliment your child when he is polite.
The different stages in teaching child manners : Toddlers - Set the stage for learning polite behavior by being polite yourself. Always say "please" and "thank you." - Promote empathy by talking about how other people feel when they're hurt. For instance, if you're reading a story like "Cinderella," you could talk about how hurt Cinderella was because her stepsisters were mean to her. - Introduce sharing and turn-taking, although it's still tough at this age. - Wash hands and face before meals.

In Everyday Graces: A Child's Book of Good Manners Everyday Graces will be useful both as a bedside book and as a reference for home, school, and church library. "This book is a treasure chest - every story a gem. The knowledge imparted in this book will, indeed, make the world a much better place." Elizabeth Dole , US Senator "It's also book of manners for Rock Stars . . . " Bono , singer/songwriter, U2 "Good manners are a reflection of a person's heart and soul. There is nothing more beautiful to a parent than when a child looks beyond himself in consideration of another. All of the kind deeds and words that come from a wellmannered child add so much joy to the lives of others. Everyday Graces is fun, entertaining, and instructive. Without even knowing it, children are learning good manners as they read through the stories and poems. I highly recommend this book to every parent. It is a book every family should have and enjoy!" Jane Seymour , actress, author of Remarkable Changes "A lovely and touching family reading experience. Here is a delightful and poignant opportunity for parent and child to bond in love and wisdom."

Raising Polite Children
by Lisa Lilienthal We’ve all been there. Your child says something completely inappropriate about the food being served at the dinner table ... at your mother-in-law’s dinner table. Torn between squelching your laughter (you were thinking the same thing!) and cringing with embarrassment at your child’s lack of manners, you remind him that all he needs to say is “No, thank you.” Or maybe it’s the reverse – that feeling of puffed up pride you get when a stranger compliments your child and she looks her in the eye and says, “Thank you.” In a culture where kids are bombarded with media images – not all of them positive or promoting polite behavior – it’s more important than ever to make manners a part of your daily routine. More than just learning to say “please” and “thank you,” manners are an important and easy-to-teach component of larger concepts like respect, values and ethics. Emily Post’s name is synonymous with good social graces. Far from being outdated and fussy, Emily’s original teachings – first published as Etiquette: the Blue Book of Social Graces in 1922 – have been made relevant to today’s society. The Gift of Good Manners: A Parent’s Guide to Raising Respectful, Kind, Considerate Children, by Peggy Post and Cindy Post Senning, (Harper Collins, 2002) is organized around three key principles: 1) it is best to model and teach manners virtually from birth to adolescence; 2) manners education is most effective when geared to a child’s normal development; and 3) mannerly behavior gives both children and adults the self confidence to navigate daily life.

Manners Matter: Pointers For Parents By Judith Rasband Make no mistake about it. Manners are missing in this modern day in the 21st Century. At a time in history when we have the most and the best of just about everything anyone could ask for, we don't even ask anymore. People just take—let alone say, "Please," "Thank you," or "May I help you?" Teens and youngsters are falling right in line with the trend. In the years before 1960, families ate meals together and children received daily training in good manners. Perhaps you remember some parental admonitions: "Wait for everyone else before you start eating. Don't slurp your soup. Don't talk with your mouth full. Use your napkin." Children went to school wearing a nice pair of pants, or a skirt for the girls, and a shirt with a collar. In the following decades a large majority of families gradually relaxed or relented, adopting a casual, fend-for-yourself approach to meals. Today it's called "grazing," and most parents are assuming a nonchalant attitude about, and even saying "no," to family mealtimes. It's all part of the casualization of America that is taking place.

Long gone is the “Leave it to Beaver” era, when it was unheard of for children not to address their elders with “thank you, sir” and “yes, ma’am.” In a “me-first” world, where many children emulate crude characters from television shows like “The Simpsons” and “South Park,” the vivacious and charismatic Judi Vankevich, is leading a grassroots movement to once again make politeness and common courtesy a staple of society. “Mind your manners” is not just a phrase that she tells her three kids. Instead, the model-turned-children’s entertainer helps elementary school students learn manners, and use them in everyday situations. Many adoring children and appreciative parents know the former college basketball player as “The Manner’s Lady.” She has even trademarked the title.

Question
We have a girl scout troop( 9-10 year old girls). The parents of some of the girls find it disrespectful to be called by thier first name. I have never required any one to call me by anything other than Shelley. Many of the other parents are on the fence. What is the right thing to do? We want to teach our girls properly. I just was never very formal myself growing up!
Thanks, Shelley Answer Dear Shelley, I have to agree with some of the parents on this issue. Children should always address adults formally, especially during introductions. For that matter, so should adults. It is a sign of respect. Some adults, like yourself, do not require children to call them by a title: Mr., Mrs., Ms., Miss, etc. Even if an adult prefers to be called by a first name, if the child's parent prefers the child to address the adult formally, then that should be the rule. It sends a mixed message to a child and undermines a parent's authority, when an adult insists that a child call him or her by his or her first name and the parent objects.

Practice makes perfect - and earns a dinner out
736 of 1453 people found this tip helpful Tip: We don't eat out often, so our kids consider it a real treat. So we use it as incentive. If they show good table manners at home - carrying on pleasant conversations, not talking with food in their mouths, saying please and thank you, sitting (relatively) still in their seats, etc. for a certain number of meals, we celebrate by taking them - and their good table manners - out to dinner. It's perfectly logical that one would have to have table manners down pat before going out to a restaurant, afterall! Did you find this tip helpful?

Etiquette 101
728 of 1441 people found this tip helpful Tip: When my homeschooled daughter was a kindergartener, we put etiquette on the list of things she wanted to learn (yes, I planted the idea). I brought home library books on etiquette some written for kids, others for adults and we tackled each aspect, including table manners. She delighted in knowing which fork to use first, how to dab her mouth with her napkin, which she kept in her lap, etc. Of course, we covered the practical rules, too, like not banging your utensils on your plate, talking about the "gross" vegetables, or showing your half eaten spaghetti to your brother. It was fun, and it also resulted in great table manners on her part!

Sunday, May 9, 2004; Page D06 The problem might have started with the 19th-century division of child-rearing between parents, with the mothers being responsible for teaching manners and the fathers for teaching morals. Fathers, who had previously been pretty much in charge of all character development and behavioral standards, not only ceded half their authority, but typically made clear that it was the less important half. "You know that upsets your mother," they would admonish errant children, thus implying that they were personally above a petty concern with etiquette, and that they sympathized with the children for not yet having outgrown maternal jurisdiction. Violations of morals were treated more seriously. Lacking the authority to deal with such transgressions with the severity everyone agreed they deserved, mothers were reduced to threatening, "Just wait until your father gets home!" This observation is not a little Mother's Day present from Miss Manners, as if mothers are not blamed for enough of the world's ills. The problem that set her musing is not, for a change, the failure to teach children manners. On the whole, mothers were doing a valiant job of that until running the entire domestic realm was not just downgraded, but reclassified as an after-business-hours pursuit.

Etiquette...what do you think of when you hear that word? Emily Post? Miss Manners? Or confusion because the do's and don'ts of acceptable social behavior we learned as children don't mesh with today's business environment? The business world our parents knew was predominantly a homogenous, Eurocentric, male environment where everyone innately understood the code of conduct. Now, the business arena has changed. The civil rights movement. The mass entry of women into the work place in the 70's. And it continues to evolve with passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and globalization of the economy. To successfully navigate the hazardous waters of the business arena of the 90's and communicate successfully with all the diverse elements in that environment, mastering business etiquette has become an imperative. Let's examine the underlying differences between social and business etiquette and some of the social rules that need adjustment and we'll take a fresh look at some of the social rules that should have made the transition to the workplace, but seem to have slipped through the cracks. ETIQUETTE AND MANNERS
Etiquette and good manners ought to be the expression of a heart that wants to be kind. Though they differ from culture to culture, the point is always to put others at ease The books below have different ways of portraying behaviors that make people comfortable or uncomfortable, and pointing the way to courtesy and kindness that others will understand and respond to. Charm School: A Manual of Etiquette with 101 Rules and Tips for Living , illustrated by Toni Goffe. Hardcover with illustrated boards, no jacket. This shows elementary children the why and how of manners, and a little of their history. The main idea is that since the Middle Ages manners have helped people live together and interact with less friction than they might without them. Though customs and specifics of etiquette may vary from age to age, the purpose of good manners is still to put people at ease with one another. Humorous color pictures enhance the text. $4.94-B
