SCOPE: Ethnobotany is a term coined in 1895 to encompass the study of the applications and economic potential of plants used by native peoples. During the first half of the 20th century the anthropological and ecological aspects of the use of plants by indigenous populations became increasingly important. However, it was during the second half of the 20th century that ethnobotany flourished and that ethnobotanical surveys, studies, and reports on explorations proliferated. These studies were fueled by the interests of major universities, pharmaceutical firms, and government agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, who greatly expanded their programs in natural products research in hopes of finding new medicines for a variety of ills, including cancer, diabetes, and disorders of the immune system.

Of interest is the fact that all cactus fruit of native Sonoran Desert species is edible, though some is insipid. Please do NOT use the flesh of a rare cactus except in dire emergency, or otherwise destroy a rare cactus. If you eat the fruit, please plant at least some of the seeds. In some cases, it is illegal to destroy a particular species of cactus.

Ethnobotany, Property and Biodiversity:
Ethical Dimensionsof Multi-Institutional Interests
by Jordan E. Erdos
May/Mayo 1998 How should scientists contracted by pharmaceutical industries and government health agencies, operating within the framework of multiple ethical systems stemming from various institutions, approach partnerships with indigenous peoples whose ethos stems from entirely different histories and circumstances? To answer this question, it is imperative to assess the distinct ethical systems in operation. The ethnobotanist, as a purveyor of Western thought and belief systems, as a scientist and medical practitioner, as a member of an academic community and as a contracted employee, enters research bearing the responsibility of multi-institutional ethical systems. The indigenous person, as a member of a collective society with no written tradition, likewise follows a moral code, although it is often more difficult to determine. While the motivation and morality of the ethnobotanist may be assessed through an examination of the vast written literature of Western ethics, it is a difficult task to explicitly reveal the indigenous ethical system. For this reason, I will be employing what Lovin and Reynolds have termed "ethical naturalism," in which moral beliefs and practices are identified by assuming "morally correct choices are those which enable persons and communities to flourish within constraints and possibilities set by the general requirements of human nature and the particular condition of their own lives." (Lovin and Reynolds 1985). By providing a picture of indigenous life, as recorded by anthropologists and ethnobotanists themselves, there should emerge a recognizable ethical system.

Information provided by the Seattle Public Library in conjunction with the Washington Park Arboretum In its broadest sense, ethnobotany is the study of how people interact with plants. The tradition of using plants to fulfill daily needs dates back to the beginning of human civilization and continues today. We all practice ethnobotany when we decorate our homes with plants, add spices to our meals, or select a certain type of wood to build something useful. Major efforts have been made over the last 50 years to record the historical and modern uses of plants, whether they be for medicinal, spiritual, practical, or culinary purposes. Here are some of the sources at the Seattle Public Library that provide information on the many ways plants have met the needs of people worldwide Ethnobotany The Use of Plants by People

Ethnobotany
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between plants and people: " ethno " is the study of people and " botany " is the study of plants. The field involves a spectrum of inquiry from archaeological investigation of ancient civilizations to the bioengineering of new crops. Much of ethnobotany deals with intellectual goals similar to those of cultural anthropology: to understand how other peoples view the world and their relation to it. History of Ethnobotany
Though the term "ethnobotany" was not coined until 1895, the history of the field begins long before that. In AD 77, the Greek surgeon Dioscorides published "De Materia Medica", which was a catalog of about 600 plants in the Mediterranean. It also included information on how the Greeks used the plants, especially for medicinal purposes. This illustrated herbal contained information on how and when each plant was gathered, whether or not it was poisonous, its actual use, and whether or not it was edible (it even provided recipes). Dioscorides stressed the economic potential of plants. For generations, scholars learned from this herbal, but did not actually venture into the field until after the Middle Ages. In 1542 Leonhart Fuchs , a Renaissance artist, lead the way back into the field. His "De Historia Stirpium" cataloged 400 plants native to Germany and Austria.

Ethnobotany Talks and Lectures by guest speaker Chris Howkins
Out of his research, Chris Howkins is available as a guest speaker to present talks on ethnobotany subjects which he has studied. The talks are designed to be of general interest but have the emphasis changed to suit groups with special interest, such as gardening, family history, local history, natural history etc. Obviously they are adjusted between infant school and university levels. These adjustments are normally made automatically but secretaries are invited to discuss any particular requirements at the time of booking. Each talk is designed to be entertaining as well as informative and no previous knowledge is required. As so few groups ask for film slides nowadays these talks are designed to be colourful without artificial aids. Old Cottage Life
