THE GLOBAL AFRICAN COMMUNITY H I S T O R Y N O T E S GREAT HABSHIS IN ETHIOPIAN/INDIAN HISTORY: History of the Ethiopian Diaspora, in India Part IV By Dr Richard Pankhurst Posted by RUNOKO RASHIDI W e saw in recent weeks that many Ethiopians, or "Abyssinians", were taken to India in medieval and post-medieval times, and that not a few of them rose to positions of power and influence. Two, we saw, held the title of Ulugh Khan. Now read on: The Third Habshi Ulugh Khan The third Habshi bearing the title of Ulugh Khan was Yaqut's son Muhammad, also known as Shams ud-Dawlah Muhammad al-Habshi, who served as vizier to his father from 1543-4 to 1557-8. Also called Khayrat Khan, he also held the title of al-Majlis al-Ashraf al-Ali, and is remembered, as we have seen, as one of the patrons of the Gujarat historian Haji ad-Dabir. Muhammad Ulugh Khan appointed as his vizier yet another Habshi, Bilal Falah Khan, and, according to the Indian historian M.S. Commissariat, "secured the same devotion as his father had enjoyed from the Habshi troops in Gujarat and was thus able to take an active part in the confused politics of the time". He sided sometimes with Itimad Khan and sometimes with Imad-ul-Mulk Arslan, but after Akbar's conquest of Gujarat ended his days in captivity, and was buried at Sarkhej beside the graves of his father Yaqut and his son Ahmad. The prestigious title of Jhujhar Khan, as Commissariat notes, was likewise successively held, by "two Abyssinian commanders" of Gujarat. The first was Bilal Habshi, who was appointed in 1538-9, and was governor of Burhanpur under Mubarak Shah of Khandesh (1537-1566). He was subsequently killed in battle before the great commercial town of Surat in 1558-9, and was buried at Sarkhej. His son, Aziz Khan, and grandson, Amin Khan, both acquired some prominence in Gujarat.

-unknown ETHIOPIA TRULY STRETCHES FORTH HER HANDS TO GOD E thiopia is one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world. Most of us identify Ethiopia with Emperor Hailie Selassie or the Queen of Sheba (Saba). The land of Sheba was referred to as Saba by the Ethiopians. The actual name of the Queen of Sheba was Queen Makeda. The time span between the reigns of Queen Makeda and Emperor Hailie Selassie is approximately 3000 years. Most of the world is familiar with this period of history wherein Ethiopians ruled a great civilization. Most people are unaware of the existence of at least 97 other sovereign rulers who reigned prior to Queen Makeda. Once we include the rule of these 97 sovereigns, Ethiopian civilization can be traced back to 3000 BC. We are familiar with Ethiopia from passages in the Old and New Testaments of the bible. Genesis, Chapter 2, verse 13 refers to 4 rivers that flowed out of Eden. One of these is the River Gihon which is the river that encircles Cush (sometimes in the bible Cush and Ethiopia are used interchangeably). The Gihon is another name for the Blue Nile River of Ethiopia. While visiting Ethiopia my family and I had the pleasure to stay at the Gihon Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Country Info Ethiopia Introduction Ethiopia General Data Ethiopia Maps Ethiopia Culture ... Ethiopia Time and Date Ethiopia History Back to Top Modern Ethiopia is the product of many millennia of interaction among peoples in and around the Ethiopian highlands region. From the earliest times, these groups combined to produce a culture that at any given time differed markedly from that of surrounding peoples. The evolution of this early "Ethiopian" culture was driven by a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. One of the most significant influences on the formation and evolution of culture in northern Ethiopia consisted of migrants from Southwest Arabia. They arrived during the first millennium B.C. and brought Semitic speech, writing, and a distinctive stone-building tradition to northern Ethiopia. They seem to have contributed directly to the rise of the Aksumite kingdom, a trading state that prospered in the first centuries of the Christian era and that united the shores of the southern Red Sea commercially and at times politically. It was an Aksumite king who accepted Christianity in the mid-fourth century, a religion that the Aksumites bequeathed to their successors along with their concept of an empire-state under centralized rulership. The establishment of what became the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was critical in molding Ethiopian culture and identity. The spread of Islam to the coastal areas of the Horn of Africa in the eighth century, however, led to the isolation of the highlands from European and Middle Eastern centers of Christendom. The appearance of Islam was partly responsible for what became a long-term rivalry between Christians and Muslimsa rivalry that exacerbated older tensions between highlanders and lowlanders and agriculturalists and pastoralists that have persisted to the present day.

Tikur Anbessa Hospital, Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia is a country with a population of 55 million of multiple nationalities. The country consists on one side of the highland plateau of Africa, which includes the source of the Blue Nile river, and on the other side the Lowest Rift-Valley Lake Depressions and the Danakel Deserts.
It is a country of ancient civilisations as exemplified by the majestic obelisks of Axirm, the mysterious monolithic rock-hewn churches at Lalibelea and the castle of King Fasil at Gondar. It is also a country of rare birds and other wildlife and of world-famous athletes. Sadly, however, it has become better known for its wars and famines which we hope are now things of the past. Anaesthesia has been one of the least addressed disciplines in the history of medical practice in Ethiopia. Until 1963 the anaesthesia service was staffed exclusively by foreign anaesthetists from many different countries. In 1963, seven nurses were trained for six months by Dr Gose (a renowned Indian anaesthetist) who is also credited with founding the blood-banking system at the then Princess Tsehai Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa. In 1971, 3 nurses were informally trained at the then Menen Memorial Hospital in Asmara, one of whom was assigned to work in Addis Ababa.

Perhaps I, as but a very amateur student of Ethiopian history, have no business labelling any book as seminal, but I can't think of a better description for this book. I find this book an excellent extension to Greater Ethiopia, by Donald Levine. Messay establishes the sociological foundations of Ethiopia, and then goes on to construct an explanation of how this foundation explains Ethiopia's survival as well as its struggle with modernization. Finally, given this explanation, he gives a reci...

Ethiopia
The Ethiopia of Bible History (see also Bible Places ) was located to the south of Egypt (see The Ancient Egyptians ), extending through the junction of the White and Blue Nile (see The Nile River ), including, and beyond, what is today Sudan (the map below shows the modern-day boundaries of Ethiopia and Sudan). Ethiopia is the Greek word that was used for the Hebrew word Cush , with both used interchangeably through The Bible . Ethiopia was inhabited by Ham's son Cush (see Sons Of Noah ) (Genesis 10:6, Jeremiah 13:23, Isaiah 18:1-2).
  • Ethiopia's history was often interwoven with that of Egypt. Together or apart they fought wars with the Israelites from time to time. During the reign of Rehoboam (see Kings of Israel and Judah ), Ethiopia fought with Egypt against Judah (2 Chronicles 12:3). In the reign of Asa, a very large force of Ethiopians under Zerah was defeated by Judah (2 Chronicles 14:9-13, 16:7-9). Later, Tirhakah, a powerful Ethiopian king of a dynasty that had subjected Egypt itself, came against Hezekiah of Judah but was driven back by the Assyrians (see Ancient Empires - Assyria ) (2 Kings 19:9, Isaiah 37:9)

http://www.watkinson.org/alc/history/africa/Ethiopia/earlyyears.htm
Early Years Details on the origins of all the peoples that make up the population of highland Ethiopia were still matters for research and debate in the early 1990s. Anthropologists believe that East Africa's Great Rift Valley is the site of humankind's origins. (The valley traverses Ethiopia from southwest to northeast.) In 1974 archaeologists excavating sites in the Awash River valley discovered 3.5-million-year- old fossil skeletons, which they named Australopithecus afarensis. These earliest known hominids stood upright, lived in groups, and had adapted to living in open areas rather than in forests. Coming forward to the late Stone Age, recent research in historical linguisticsand increasingly in archaeology as wellhas begun to clarify the broad outlines of the prehistoric populations of present-day Ethiopia. These populations spoke languages that belong to the Afro-Asiatic super-language family, a group of related languages that includes Omotic, Cushitic, and Semitic, all of which are found in Ethiopia today. Linguists postulate that the original home of the Afro-Asiatic cluster of languages was somewhere in northeastern Africa, possibly in the area between the Nile River and the Red Sea in modern Sudan. From here the major languages of the family gradually dispersed at different times and in different directionsthese languages being ancestral to those spoken today in northern and northeastern Africa and far southwestern Asia. The first language to separate seems to have been Omotic, at a date sometime after 13,000 B.C. Omotic speakers moved southward into the central and southwestern highlands of Ethiopia, followed at some subsequent time by Cushitic speakers, who settled in territories in the northern Horn of Africa, including the northern highlands of Ethiopia. The last language to separate was Semitic, which split from Berber and ancient Egyptian, two other Afro-Asiatic languages, and migrated eastward into far southwestern Asia.

Listen to the Ethiopian National Anthem
Ethiopia is situated in North Eastern Africa bordering Sudan to the north and north west, Eritrea to the north and north east, Djibouti to the east, Somalia to the east and south east and to the south lies Kenya.
Ethiopia has a variety of distinct geographical zones and contrasts, varying as much as 120 metres below sea level in the harsh salt flats of the Danakil depression, to a 4618 meter peak - Ras Dashan, the fourth highest peak in Africa, in the Simien mountains The most distinctive feature is the northern part of the Great Rift Valley, which runs through the entire length of the country in a northeast-southwest direction. In the centre of the country is a high plateau region. This rugged tableland is bordered by steep slopes on the northwest; gradual slopes lead from the centre to the Western Plains and, on the east, through Somalia to the Indian Ocean.
