    History of Ethiopian Urbanization
Map from: Zewde, Bahru. A History of Modern Ethiopia. Addis Ababa:
    Addis Ababa University, 1991.
The massive urbanization and primacy of Addis Ababa in the last 50 years is a new phenomenon in Ethiopia, historically a nation of small villages and homesteads (Tarver 184).
    Ketemas
The earliest settlements in Ethiopia were the ketemas , towns that developed inside military garrissons. These defenses provided protection from European invaders and other Ethiopian tribes (McClellan 33-35). The ketemas were often established by peasants in zones between the territories of several constantly warring ethnic groups. Small market centers developed in many of the ketemas , which were supplied with agricultural products by gabbars , peasants who sold their surplus goods (McClellan 33-35).
    Factors Preventing Ethiopian Urbanization
    • Constant warring between rival chiefs forced peasants to live semi-nomadically.
    • No single ruler or group held power long enough to develop a large enough market center to draw the population away from an agricultural lifestyle.
    • Religious wars between Moslems and Christians from 1300-1700 AD left the region in ruins and pushed peasants back and forth across the land like pawns.

Africa is the place where people first originated, so African history goes back further than in any other place on earth. At first there were not very many people in Africa, and they lived by gathering wild plants and by scavenging meat that other, stronger animals had killed. Gradually they began using stone tools, and fire, and then hunting for themselves.
Around 6000 BC , the climate in Africa (and other places) got gradually hotter and drier. The Sahara Desert was forming. It was harder to find enough food. Some people in Africa began farming to get more food. They probably got the idea from West Asia
But with farming the population expanded quickly. By 3000 BC, there were so many people in Africa that they started to form into kingdoms. The first African kingdom (and probably the first big kingdom anywhere) was in Egypt , where the Pharaohs built the pyramids . South of Egypt, along the upper Nile river, the kingdom of

This is believed to be the year when soccer was first introduced to Ethiopia by foreigners residing in the capital, Addis Abeba.
Although not listed as an official international game, the first soccer match between an Ethiopian side and a foreign team took place in the capital when an Addis Abeba selection team defeated a French Navy side from Djibouti 3-1. Yervant Abraham , an Armenian student, scored all three goals. His two brothers, Haigaz and Torkom, also featured in the line-up for the Addis selection
In December of that year , a group of youngsters, who lived around the Saint George church in the capital , founded the Saint George Football Association , the oldest and most successful team in Ethiopia.

    Cycling History in Ethiopia
It is believed that the Italians introduced cycling to Ethiopia during the 1930s. They also formed the first clubs in the country and organized competitions, which were initially restricted to their local Italian community inhabitants in Addis Abeba but later on included Ethiopians as well.
As bicycles became the main means of transportation, the number of riders grew, and subsequentlyt, the popularity of the sport.
Kassa Fedil , who won numerous tournaments during the 1938-1941 seasons, was a member of the St. George football Club and the first Ethiopian cyclist hero. It was said that Kassa was such a dominating force and extremely confident cyclist, that he would be eating breakfast at home while a competition is in progress, and would still beat the pack to win the tournament. Other top cyclists at the time included Mulugetta Kassa Kassaye Resom and Tesfaye Amde-Michael

    African History
Sourcebook Africa is both the most clearly defined of continents - in its geography - and the hardest to pin down in historical terms. Human beings originated in Africa and, as a result, there is more diversity of human types and societies than anywhere else. It is not possible, in any non-ideological way, to claim any one of these peoples or societies as more essentially "African" than others; nor is it possible to exclude a given society as "not really African". On this site historical sources on the history of human societies in the continent of Africa are presented, when available, without making prejudgements about what is "African". This page is a subset of texts derived from the three major online Sourcebooks listed below. For more contextual information, for instance about the Islamic world, check out these web sites. A Brief History
The Stanford Ethiopian Student Union was formed in the Fall Quarter 1997 with a stated purpose of collecting and disseminating information about Ethiopian history, culture, and politics in order to increase awareness about Ethiopia in the Stanford community and the Bay Area. The organization was first named SSUE, Stanford Students for United Ethiopia. SSUE was changed to its current name, SESU, Stanford Ethiopian Student Union in the Fall of 1999. Abel Bogale and Tseday Alehegn drafted the first constitution and co-founded the organization. The first informal meeting was called soon thereafter in November of 1997 and the following people were present to decide on the organization's official name: Liben Eabisa, Abel Bogale, Nesanet Abegaze, Yosef Kebede, Tseday Alehegn, Ribka Berhanu, Awetu Simesso, Begna Gebreyes, Saba Bireda, Admas Kanyagia, and Solome Lemma. Abel Bogale served as the first President from Fall Quarter 1997 to Spring Quarter 1998. Nesanet Abegaze was President for academic year 1998/99. Ribka Berhanu served as the first Treasurer for academic year 1998/99. Abel Bogale was again named president for academic year 1999/2000, the year the group assumed its new name. Tenbite Ermias was Treasurer for academic year 1999/2000. Solome Lemma was elected as third President of SESU and is currently serving for Academic Year 2000-2001. Additional executive positions have been incorporated into the revised SESU constitution.
