For centuries, the world Jewish community was not even aware of the existence of the Jewish community of Ethiopia in the northern province of Gondar. The miracle of Operation Solomon is only now being fully understood; an ancient Jewish community has been brought back from the edge of government-imposed exile and starvation. But once they were kings. . .

Christianity spread through the Axum dynasty of Ethiopia in the 4th century CE. By the 7th century, however, Islam had surpassed Christianity and had separated Ethiopia from its Christian African neighbors. Prior to this, the Beta Israel had enjoyed relative independence through the Middle Ages. Their reign was threatened in the 13th century CE under the Solomonic Empire, and intermittent fighting continuing for the next three centuries with other tribes. In 1624, the Beta Israel fought what would be their last battle for independent autonomy against Portuguese-backed Ethiopians. A graphic eyewitness account described the battle:

Finally, ethiopia s history which culminates in the 1975 revolution poses some very critical issues in Marxist theory, which revolve around the role of

Ethiopian History and Politics By way of introducing these series of posts on Ethiopia, I must state at the outset that they are offered not as definitive versions of what took place historically, but more in the spirit of an open notebook. When there are errors in fact or in interpretation, I humbly invite the Ethiopian comrades of the Marxism list to point them out. There are many reasons why it is important to deepen our understanding of Ethiopian history and politics. To start off with, since it is of vital importance for Marxism to be truly internationalist, I would hope that comrades from advanced industrialized countries on the list make a continuing effort to learn about countries like Ethiopia, because effective solidarity can only be built on the basis of solid understanding. While Ethiopia might not have the advanced technology or industrial prowess of the United States or Great Britain, it *does* have a strategic role in geopolitical terms. Its geographical location on the Horn of Africa has forced it willy-nilly to be part of the world-system's periodic great struggles, from Christianity versus Islam, to capitalism versus communism. I would argue that in light of this, it is absolutely incumbent upon us to understand conflicts in Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia in these terms, since they have drawn together religious and geopolitical conflicts in the guise of apparently "senseless" civil wars. Another important reason to study Ethiopia is that it was the site of a powerful revolution in 1975 that was hijacked by the Derg. Just as American Trotskyists have intense feelings about how their hopes were dashed by a bureaucratic monster, so might Ethiopian Marxists. It is a credit to these comrades that they have not given up hope on socialism. I suppose one of the reasons that battle-scarred victims of American Trotskyism and the Ethiopian revolution have not given up hope in socialism is that the alternative seems so wretched. In an earlier generation, it was much easier to believe in the superiority of democratic capitalism, as 1950s prosperity led the NY intellectuals to take jobs with the State Department. Nowadays, it is only jackals like David Horowitz or Eugene Genovese who try to promote similar myths.

History
Ethiopia Table of Contents Starting about the mid-sixteenth century, the Oromo people, migrating from the southwest, gradually forced their way into the kingdom, most often by warfare. The Oromo, who eventually constituted about 40 percent of Ethiopia's population, possessed their own culture, religion, and political institutions. As the largest national group in Ethiopia, the Oromo significantly influenced the course of the country's history by becoming part of the royal family and the nobility and by joining the army or the imperial government. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, religious and regional rivalries gradually weakened the imperial state until it was little more than a collection of independent and competing fiefdoms. Ethiopia's modern period (1855 to the present)represented by the reigns of Tewodros II, Yohannis IV, Menelik II, Zawditu, and Haile Selassie I; by the Marxist regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam; and, since mid-1991, by the Transitional Government of Ethiopia under Meles Zenawihas been been characterized by nation-building as well as by warfare. Tewodros II started the process of recreating a cohesive Ethiopian state by incorporating Shewa into his empire and by suppressing revolts in the country's other provinces. Yohannis IV battled to keep Ethiopia free from foreign domination and to retard the growing power of the Shewan king, Menelik. Eventually, Menelik became emperor and used military force to more than double Ethiopia's size. He also defeated an Italian invasion force that sought to colonize the country.

Prehistory 17th Century Axumite Empire ... 20th Century Axum stela E thiopia boasts one of the oldest and most colourful histories of any African kingdom. In Prehistory , it was the home of the earliest hominids on this earth. Its traditional history stretches back to the time of King Solomon. Few know much of the mighty Axumite Empire that grew up in the north of the country after the birth of Christ and which was a major trading centre for some seven hundred years. Neither have many people heard of the awe-inspiring rock-hewn churches that were constructed during the Middle Ages in Lalibela high on the Ethiopian plateau. Since that time, the country has had very varied fortunes in all sorts of ways. Gondar castle With frequent incursions from neighbouring lands and particularly from the influences of Islam, social and political development was somewhat piecemeal for a long time, with notable periods of relative peace and stability such as that provided by the rule of King Fasiledes in the 17th century in Gondar.

Prehistory 17th Century Axumite Empire ... 20th Century T he 20th century was to be a period of great positive development as well as great trauma and anguish for Ethiopia. Addis Ababa In the late 1800s, there were to be threats and incursions from both the Italians (with a great and memorable victory for the Ethiopians over the Italian troops at Adwa in 1896) and the Dervishes from the Sudan (with another Ethiopian victory in 1889). It was to be Emperor Menelik II who was to take Ethiopia into the modern world of the 20th century. He chose the site for his new capital of Addis Ababa - his 'New Flower' - and set to creating a modern country with electricity, telephones, schools, hospitals and a railway. Haile Selassie In world terms, it was to be Emperor Haile Selassie , crowned in 1930, who was to make Ethiopia a known world power. He held his country together as a nation through the Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941, made good relations with European monarchs and statesmen, and spoke up boldly for his people in the League of Nations. He survived as monarch until 1974 when he was overthrown and murdered by the Derg , the Communist regime under the military colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam, and Ethiopia was plunged into a stagnating 17 years of oppressive and repressive dictatorship.

Ethiopia boasts proud heritage The history of Ethiopia - once known as Abyssinia - is rich, ancient and mysterious. Anthropologists believe the Great Rift Valley which runs through Ethiopia is the site of the origin of humankind. Ethiopia was the only African nation never colonized by a European power. The first recorded account of the region dates back almost 5,000 years to the time of the pharaohs when the ancient Egyptians sent expeditions down the Red Sea in search of gold, ivory, incense and slaves. In the Afar region scientists discovered the famous prehistoric remains of Lucy, until recently the oldest skeleton ever found. Lucy lived more than three million years ago and her bones now rest in the Ethiopian National Museum in Addis Ababa. The remains that were discovered to make Lucy the second oldest were also found in Ethiopia - that specimen is believed to be more than four million years old. The country's rich history includes many amazing stories. The Queen of Sheba is from Ethiopia and legend has it the Ark of the Covenant rests in the city of Axum. Other tales include the rise and fall of the great Axumite kingdom and the story of King Lalibela. The king is believed to have constructed eleven rock-hewn churches that were once considered one of the wonders of the world and are still standing today.

Cushitic language speakers are believed to have been the original inhabitants of Ethiopia. They were driven out of the region by the Cushites in the 2d millennium B.C. The Cushites founded a new civilization which probably traded with the Egyptians, according to ancient Egyptian texts. The Egyptian name for Ethiopians was Habashat, which is the probable origin of the name Abyssinia. According to tradition, the Ethiopian kingdom was founded (10th cent. B.C. ) by Solomon's first son, Menelik I, whom the queen of Sheba is supposed to have borne. However, the first kingdom for which there is documentary evidence is that of Aksum (Axum), a kingdom which probably emerged in the 2d cent. A.D.

In a remote part of Tigray region, Yeha lies several hours drive from the more accessible city of Axum , The journey takes you on rough tracks through dramatic highland scenery and eventually ends in a beautiful and serene agricultural hamlet. It is there, close to a much more recent Christian church, that you may see the towering ruins of Yehas Temple of the Moon - built more than 2,500 years ago, in Sabaean times. The temple is an imposing rectangular edifice. Though it has long since lost its roof and upper storeys the ruins stand some twelve metres in height. As evening falls, the temple's finely dressed and polished limestone reflects the glow of the setting sun with a warmth and brilliance that cannot be accidental. The huge, precisely fitted blocks from which the inward- inclining walls are formed seem to bear out ancient opinion that Sabaean buildings could be filled with water without a single drop being lost.

There three emperors who shaped Ethiopia into what Haile Sellassie recieved: Teodoros, Iohaness and Menelik. The best advise is to read the books on Ethiopian history, it's all there. Many things which seems problemac today do have roots embeded in the past. Our biggest problem is that we know very little about history. We study it as if history is an academic "subject" than history is the story of our present. Why do you think your doctor keep writing down everything? That's the only way we can know where our problems came from. How can we cure anything without the knowledge of the past problems? Do we really believe that our yesterday is dead? We would be able to wake up in the morning if this idea was true... History:

Ethiopian History Demographic Geographic Ethiopian History Ethiopia, one of the oldest nation in the world, was already a great power when recorded history began. Ethiopia was referred to by early writers as Kush, Kushy, Aitopia, Aithopis and until more recently as Abyssinia. The name Ethiopia comes from two Greek words meaning sunburned faces, and clearly refers to the brown skin of the natives. Ethiopia was first settled in prehistoric times by the sons of Ham; it is generally believed to have began about 3000 B.C. and the Semitic immigrations followed some 2,000 years later in the millennium through the Arabian peninsula about 1000 B.C. A basic legend of Ethiopian history consecrates this venerable antiquity by making the Queen of Sheba, whose visit to Solomon is recorded in the Book of Kings, a Queen of Ethiopia and the mother of Minilik I, first ruler of the solomonic line of Ethiopian Emperors. The Rift valley which runs north-south and separates the Central Plateau on the west from the Danakil Plains, and Eastern Plateau on the east and the trough of the Red Sea with Lake Rudolf is the best known sites in the world that boasts the origins of humankind. Lucy, the most complete and best presented human ancestor ever found, aged at 3.2 million years old, was discovered in the Afar region of Eastern Ethiopia. The 4.4 million year old Ramidus found in the central Afar region and the 2.5 million-year-old tools and artifacts are further testimonies to Ethiopia' immense historical wealth.

Ethiopia's non-official "civil" flag Background:
Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, one exception being the Italian occupation of 1936-41. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), in 1991. A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A two and a half year border war with Eritrea ended with a peace treaty on 12 December 2000.

There are many lists of rulers at this website. This page organizes the lists of the philosophy of history Iliad , reveals something about the times that nothing else could. Another motivation, or inspiration, for all this, however, came from James Bryce's classic The Holy Roman Empire [1904]. Bryce was intrigued by the notion of universal authority and rule that was inherited from Rome by the mediaeval emperors, who usually had nothing like an actual authority or rule approaching the universality that the Romans had really enjoyed. Bryce, indeed, did not venerate the absolutism of imperial rule he was actually a British admirer of America but the ideology of universal authority was a consequence of the growing notion of common humanity. Thus, Romans who cared to think about the meaning of their situation, like the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, saw themselves embodying the

The history of license plates in Ethiopia and Eritrea can be divided into five periods. The first period was the old Kingdom of Ethiopia up to 1936. The second period was the period of Italian occupation. In Ethiopia this was 1936-41, in Eritrea this was 1896-1941. The third period is the Kingdom of Ethiopia from 1941-74. During the first part of this period 1941-52, Eritrea was administered by the British. In 1952 Eritrea was unified with Ethiopia in a federation somewhat against the wishes of Eritreans, thus beginning a long war for independence. The fourth period is the Republic of Ethiopia 1974 to the present. In Eritrea this period is from 1974-93. The last period covers plate issues of the independent Rephblic of Eritrea 1993 to the present. Throughout most of their history Eritrea and Ethiopia used one line plates on the front of vehicles and one or more commonly two line plates on the rear. Throughout this history, motorcycles use the same plate series as other vehicles. They are, however smaller and two line motorcycle plates are common. Other vehicles use both two line and one line plates.
