Ethiopia - HISTORY
* Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Sub Saharan Africa. The earliest evidence of Ethiopian history was in around 1000BC when the Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon.
* The first recorded kingdom in Ethiopia grew around Axum during the 3rd century BC. Axum was an offshoot of the Semitic Sabeam kingdoms of southern Arabia, it became the greatest ivory market in the north east.
* Ethiopia influenced the state of Meroe in Sudan. Over the next few centuries, Axum encroached more and more on Meroe until, when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Ethiopia conquered the kingdom.
* Christianity was adopted in the country by a Syrian youth named Frumentius who grew up in Axum and converted the King; the youth was later made the first Bishop in 330 AD.
* Axum conquered parts of Yemen and southern Arabia and remained a great power until the death of the Prophet Mohammed.
* Islam was expanding which had the effect of cutting off Ethiopia from its former Mediterranean trading partners and allies, Muslims replaced the Egyptians in the Red Sea ports. Ethiopians were allowed to consecrate their Bishops in Cairo and pilgrims were allowed to travel to Jerusalem.
* Unfortunately, the Ethiopians did not have such a good relationship with the pagan tribes in the south and pressure from these tribes forced the Ethiopian emperors to adopt the life of nomadic military commanders living in makeshift cities. The priests were forced to become monks and hermits. After some time these tribes were pacified and Ethiopia recovered enough to take the provinces of Amhara, Lasta, Gojam and Damot. At a similar time the capital was moved to the south to the Amhara province.

http://www.ethiopianembassy.org/history.shtml
History The history of Ethiopia, known to many as Abyssinia, is rich, ancient, and still in part unknown. Anthropologists believe that East Africa's Great Rift Valley is the site of the origin of humankind. The first recorded account of the region dates back to almost 5,000 years ago during the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, when the ancient Egyptians sent expeditions down the Red Sea in quest of gold, ivory, incense, and slaves. It is in the Afar region of Ethiopia where scientists discovered the remains of "Lucy" or Dinkenesh, meaning "thou art wonderful," as she is known to the Ethiopians. "Lucy" lived more than three million years ago, and her bones now rest in the Ethiopian National Museum. The country's rich history is woven with legends of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba; the Ark of the Covenant that is said to rest in Axum; the great Axumite kingdom and the birth of Christianity; the rise of Islam; and the story of King Lalibela, who is believed to have constructed eleven rock-hewn churches, still standing today and considered the eighth wonder of the world. Ethiopia is the only African nation that was not colonized by European colonial forces. It was briefly occupied by the Italians between 1936 and 1941.

Aksum
300 BCE - 531 CE Aksum’s foundation is suggested to be as early as 300 BCE. Very little is known of the time period between the mid-first millennium BCE to the beginning of Aksum’s flourish, thought to be around the first century CE. There is little in common between the Aksumites and the earlier pre-Aksumite civilizations (Munro-Hay 1991, 4). The Aksumite kingdom was located in the northern province of Tigray and there it remained the capital of Ethiopia until the seventh century CE. Aksum owes its prosperity to its location. The Blue Nile basin and the Afar depression are both within a close proximity of Aksum. The former is rich of gold and the latter of salt: both materials having a highly important use to the Aksumites. Aksum was also within an accessible distance to the port of Adulis, on the coast of the Red Sea, hence maintaining trade relations with other nations, such as Egypt, India, and Arabia. Aksum’s ‘fertile’ and ‘well-watered’ location produced enough food for its population as well as its exotic animals, such as elephants and rhinoceros (Pankhurst 1998, 22-3). Aksum inherited a culture highly influenced by South Arabia. The Aksumites' language

History: The EPRDF continued to experience resistance in some parts of the country, mainly from elements of Ethiopia’s ethnic patchwork (Afar, Issa and Gurgureh, as well as ethnic Somalis) and from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which seeks independence for their province in the west of the country. Of greater long-term significance was the decision of the northern province of Eritrea – previously independent until 1952, when the United Nations merged it into Ethiopia – to secede from Ethiopia. The Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), the dominant force in the province and previously allied to the EPRDF, declared independence in May 1993. The Ethiopians acquiesced in the decision, despite the loss of their entire coastline. Relations between the two were initially good and a number of economic and security agreements were signed. It was not to last. By May 1995, the transitional administration and a short-lived constituent assembly, both of which were dominated by the EPRDF, had agreed a new constitution and were ready to hold national elections. The EPRDF won a massive victory – including all 92 seats in Addis Ababa – in elections for the new Council of People’s Representatives; Meles Zenawi took over as Prime Minister. The result was repeated at the most recent poll held in August 2000: Meles Zenawi was endorsed to serve a second term as premier, while the presidency was assumed by Girma Wolde-Giyorgis.

Over time, as their social and perhaps economical connections in the Ethiopian region became vast, it was safe PreAksum, Back to history Articles, Middle Ages.
http://www.geocities.com/mentiso/aksum/
Aksum
300 BCE - 531 CE Aksum inherited a culture highly influenced by South Arabia. The Aksumites' language, Ge'ez, was a modified version of the South Arabian rudiments, with admixtures of Greek and perhaps Cushitic tongues already present in the region. Their architectural art was inherited from their South Arabian counters. Some Aksumite artwork contained combinations of Middle Eastern deities. From its capital on the Tigray Plateau, Aksum was in command of the trade of ivory with Sudan. It also dominated the trade route leading south and the port of Adulis on the Gulf of Zola. Its success depended on resourceful techniques, production of coins, steady migrations of Greco-Roman merchants and ships landing on the port of Adulis. In exchange for Aksum’s goods, traders bid many kinds of cloth, jewelry, metals and steel for weapons. At its peak, Aksum controlled territories as far as southern Egypt, east to the Gulf of Aden, south to the Omo River, and west to the Cushite Kingdom of Meroe. The South Arabian kingdom of the Himyarites was also under the power of Aksum. Unlike the nobility, the people used salt and iron bars as money and barter remained their main source of commerce.

History leading to Famine in Ethiopia The Modern Age of Ethiopia, which began in 1855, brought four very powerful emperors into rule, which expanded the empire and shaped modern Ethiopia. The first of these emperors, Theodore II, was a strong warrior who reassembled the army and used canons and roads to bring many of the regions under his control. He had delusions of grandeur, which were thwarted by those who did not share his dream of unity for Ethiopia. Theodore II ended his own life in 1868 after an argument with the British government (Kurtz 51). His successors, Yohannes and Menelik II, were able to triple the territory and add millions of people to Ethiopia. Emperor Yohannes struggled with invasions from Egypt, Italy, and Sudan during his rule from 1871 until he was assassinated by a sniper's bullet in 1889 (Kurtz 51). Menelik II was crowned Emperor in 1889 after uniting all of the provinces, including some of them that had been cut off for centuries. In 1896, Emperor Menelik fought Italian armies at Adwa, which was a decisive victory because he stopped Italian expansion in Ethiopia. Menelik's army of nearly eighty thousand people had to live off of

Christianity in Ethiopia Ethiopia has found strength in the church. From as far back as biblical times, the church has been the foundation upon which this magnificent country has developed. When the flood waters receded, and Noah and his sons disembarked from the great ship, God told them to, "Be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it" (Genesis 9:7). Each of Noah's sons and their wives set out to do just that. His eldest son Shem, whom Jesus descended from, went into what is now Jerusalem. Japheth went into Europe and Asia Minor. Noah's third son, Ham, settled in Canaan, which is now Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and East Africa (Bible Commentary). One of the areas that Ham's descendents settled is now present-day Ethiopia, one of the oldest countries in existence (Bible Commentary). The first known civilization in Ethiopia was that of the mighty Aksumite Kingdom. Having established itself in 1000 BC, in northern Ethiopia, it eventually spread over all of northern and even central Ethiopia. The ancient city of Axum, which was started by the Aksumites, was Ethiopia's first capital city (Kurtz 45).

Africa's oldest independent country which, except for a four-year occupation by Mussolini's Italy at the end of the 1930s, has never been colonised. Famous for the notable defeat of the invading Italian army at Adowa in 1896, Ethiopia inspired the rest of Africa in its path to independence.
