History
Ethiopia has been around for a very long time. The country's Rift Valley is known as the cradle of humanity - fossils of the oldest known upright hominid, the 3.5-million-year-old 'Lucy', were found here in 1974. Ethiopians have a record of their rulers that stretches back 5000 years, and although this is not supported by other records, you can find Biblical passages which record Ethiopian episodes around 1000 BC. The Queen of Sheba's son, Menelik I, is regarded as the first emperor of Ethiopia - his dynasty ended with Haile Selassie, who ruled from 1930 until 1974. According to local tradition, ancient Ethiopians were Jews, and a community of Ethiopian Jews lived in the country until the late 1980s, when the last of them moved to Israel. Christianity was brought to the then Kingdom of Axum by St Frumentius, who was consecrated as the first bishop in 330AD. Axum was slap-bang in the path of the armies of Islam, which set out from Mecca on a holy war of conversion in 632AD, and although the Christian kingdom was cut off from the rest of Christendom, Islam never really took hold. Over the next thousand years, the kingdom came under attack from various forces - pagan tribes forced the Ethiopian emperors to abandon their cities and become nomads for a time, Muslims moved into the east of the country in the 12th and 14th centures, and in the 16th century the Islamic kingdoms gained the support of the Ottoman Empire, seriously threatening the power of the Kingdom of Axum.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... ETHIOPIA Legend tells us that Ethiopia was founded by the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Whether this is so or not, indisputable is that Ethiopia was known as an important part of classical trade routes as far back as 500 years before Christ. Christianized in the 4th century, Ethiopia managed to counter Islamic invasion in the 600s. But its Coptic Christians were then cut off from Christian centers by the now-Islamic countries of northern Africa and the rest of the Middle East. Portugal arrived in the 15th century, using Ethiopia to bolster their trade across the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese tried to introduce Roman Catholicism to little avail. In the early 17th century, Ethiopia expelled all missionaries. An Italian effort to invade in 1880 was also successfully foiled. In 1930, Haile Selassie came to the throne. His reign was interrupted in 1936 by another Italian invasion attempt this time successful and he fled to England. Italy was forced to withdraw from Ethiopia thanks to British and Ethiopian military action during World War II and Haile Selassie was restored to the throne as emperor. In 1974, a coalition of forces deposed Haile Selassie. After abolishing the monarchy, the power of the Coptic Church was limited and serious land reform was initiated. A socialist state was declared, resulting in the deaths of thousands of the new government's foes. The long-time relationship between the US military and Ethiopia was abrogated in favor of a new pact with the Soviet Union. Somalia attacked Ethiopia in 1977 and with Soviet assistance, Ethiopia repelled the Somalian forces, although skirmishes continued. Internal fighting in Ethiopia over Eritrea and later the province of Tigre, had devastated the country. Though elections were finally held in 1994, tensions heated up again with Eritrea in 1998 and escalated in 1999 with both sides expending considerable energy and manpower in a struggle to control some seemingly unimportant border territory near Badme.

Phillipson (Editor) Book Description This two-volume work provides a detailed account of five seasons' archaeological research at Aksum, which Dr. Phillipson directed on behalf of the British Institute in Eastern Africa. Aksum was the capital of a major state centered on the highlands of Northern Ethiopia/Eritrea, which exercised a powerful influence on international trade during the first seven centuries AD. Christianity was adopted in the 4th Century AD, and Aksum played a vitally important role in the rise of Ethiopian civilization. The research described is intended to provide a comprehensive view of ancient Aksum, including aspects which had received little previous attention. Dr. Phillipson and his colleagues describe royal tombs and commoner graves, domestic economy and international trade, monumental architecture and farming settlements, finely carved ivory and flaked stone tools. The chronological framework is set in its Ethiopian, African and international context.

The Old Testament records the Queen of Sheba 's visit to Jerusalem , and some scholars have argued Sheba was in present-day Ethiopia. According to legend, Menelik I , the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, founded the Ethiopian Empire The connection between Egypt and Ethiopia from at least as early as the Twenty-second dynasty of Egypt was very intimate. Beginning with Piye , a ruler of the Twenty-fifth dynasty , occasionally the two countries were under the same ruler, so that the arts and civilization of the one naturally found their way into the other. Herodotus , the Greek historian of the 5th century BC describes ancient Ethiopia in his writings. Under the Ptolemies, the arts as well as the enterprise of the Greeks entered Ethiopia, and led to the establishment of Greek colonies . When Menelik II died his grandson Lij Iyassu succeeded to the throne but soon lost support because of his Muslim ties. He was deposed in 1916 by the Christian nobility and Menelik's daughter Zewditu was made empress. Her cousin Ras Tafari Makonnen (1892-1975) was made regent and successor to the throne. In 1930 after the empress died the regent adopting the throne name Haile Selassie was crowned emperor. His reign was interrupted in 1936 when Italian Fascist forces invaded and occupied Ethiopia. The emperor was forced into exile in England despite his plea to the League of Nations for intervention. Five years later the Italians were defeated by British and Ethiopian forces and the emperor returned to the throne. After a period of civil unrest which began in February 1974 the aging Haile Selassie I was deposed on September 12 1974 and a provisional administrative council of soldiers known as the Derg ("committee") seized power from the emperor and installed a government which was socialist in name and military in style. The Derg summarily executed 59 members of the royal family and ministers and generals of the emperor's government; Emperor Haile Selassie was strangled in the basement of his palace on August 22 1975.

In 1974, a provisional administrative council of soldiers, known as the Derg ("committee") seized power from Emperor Haile Selassie and installed a government which was Socialist in name and military in style. Its leader, Lt. Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam, assumed power as head of state and Derg chairman. Mengistu's years in office were marked by a totalitarian-style government and the country's massive militarization, financed by the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc, and assisted by Cuba. From 1977 through early 1978 thousands of suspected enemies of the Derg were tortured and/or killed in a purge called the "red terror." Communism was officially adopted during the late 1970s and early 1980s with the promulgation of a Soviet-style constitution, Politburo, and the creation of the Workers' Party of Ethiopia (WPE). In December 1976, an Ethiopian delegation in Moscow signed a military assistance agreement with the Soviet Union. The following April, Ethiopia abrogated its military assistance agreement with the United States and expelled the American military missions. In July 1977, sensing the disarray in Ethiopia, Somalia attacked across the Ogaden Desert in pursuit of its irredentist claims to the ethnic Somali areas of Ethiopia. Ethiopian forces were driven back far inside their own frontiers, but, with the assistance of a massive Soviet airlift of arms and Cuban combat forces, they stemmed the attack. Although the major Somali regular units were forced out of the Ogaden in March 1978, insurgency and occasional border clashes in the area continue.
