Ethiopians In US Working With Ethiopian Government On Issues of National Interest
Addis Ababa, Feb.09(ENA)Ethiopians residing in the US are working with the Ethiopian government on issues of national interest, said an organization known as "Emergency Hunger Relief Fund Committee". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted the committee, which is set up in the US, as saying " Ethiopians have been actively participating in the humanitarian and development activities underway in the country." Committee Representative, Priest Tadesse said in a statement he gave there on Monday that the Ethiopians were doing their level best to help contain HIV/AIDS, drought and health problems. Pointing out that the Ethiopians organized under the committee took part in life saving campaign in three rounds earlier in the country, he said they were also ready now to participate in the campaign for the fourth time. The committee donated over half a million USD to AIDS orphans and drought-affected people in Ogaden, Negele Borena and other parts of Ethiopia over the last four years, Priest Tadesse said. He said the committee was also under preparation to sink water wells with 125,0,000 Birr in Debre-Wegeg Trinity Cathedral and Aba-Samuel Monasteries in Harari State with a view to curbing scarcity of drinking water.

Government suspends journalists association over lapsed license
Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Ethiopia Newspaper and Magazines or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) The government has suspended Ethiopia's only independent journalists association for failing to renew its license, officials said Tuesday. "This is a major blow for free speech and press freedom in the country," said Kifle Muflat, head of the 155-member Ethiopian Free Press Journalists Association (EFJA) for the past four years. The move comes amid growing tension between the government and the EFJA over a controversial new draft press law in the impoverished country in the Horn of Africa. "We are fighting this Draconian press law, and the government does not like that," Kifle said. The press bill, which could come into effect later this year, has been criticized as being "restrictive" by international press watchdog organizations. Among other things, it stipulates prison sentences for journalists who commit errors in reporting, requires all foreign publications to be vetted by the government before going on sale in the country and gives the government 30 days to reply to questions from journalists. Getachew Gonfa, an official who handles licensing at the Ministry of Justice, which imposed the suspension, said the legislation had not been politically motivated. He also said the journalists group had been operating illegally.

January 13, 2004 COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a developing east African country comprising 11 semi-autonomous administrative regions organized loosely along major ethnic lines. Tourism facilities in Ethiopia are minimal. The capital is Addis Ababa. A border dispute between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea erupted in May 1998 and escalated into full-scale conflict that continued until a cease-fire was reached in June 2000. In December 2000, a peace agreement was signed between the two countries to delimit and demarcate the border. The peace process is ongoing and the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea remains closed. ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: Citizens of the United States may obtain tourist/visitors visas upon arrival in Ethiopia. This service is only available at Bole International Airport, Ethiopia's main airport, in Addis Ababa. The fee of 390 birr (approximately 45 dollars (US)) is payable only in Ethiopian currency. Travelers may exchange currency upon arrival. However, because of possible confusion or delays, travelers should obtain a valid Ethiopian visa prior to arrival whenever possible. An exit visa is required if your entry visa has expired by the time of departure. In such circumstances, an exit visa can be obtained at the main immigration office in Addis Ababa only and not at Bole International Airport. Ethiopia charges a 20 dollar (US) departure tax, payable in USD cash only.

With Ethiopia's emergence from the border conflict with Eritrea, the government resumed its economic reform efforts and renewed its commitment to poverty reduction within a framework of macroeconomic stability, as laid out in its interim poverty reduction strategy paper (I-PRSP) of November 2000. Under the provisions of a new Constitution adopted in December 1994, Ethiopia became a federation - the newly designated Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia - consisting of nine states and one metropolitan area (the capital, Addis Ababa). The states have their own parliamentary assemblies, which elect representatives to the Council of the Federation, the upper chamber of the Federal Parliamentary Assembly. The lower chamber, the Council of People's Representatives (CPR), consists of 548 directly elected deputies. The Federal Parliamentary Assembly elects a President as Head of State; although executive power remains largely the preserve of the Prime Minister, who is elected by the CPR.
