ETHIOPIA: Government accused of intellectual repression
NAIROBI, 24 Jan 2003 (IRIN) - The Ethiopian government is muzzling educators and students with a policy of harsh repression, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released on Friday. This policy included extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and widespread denials of freedom of opinion and association, it said. "Ethiopia's security forces have targeted students and teachers, because they are among the most politically active elements of Ethiopian society," Saman Zia-Zarifi, the academic freedom director for HRW, is quoted as saying. "Ethiopia is on the brink of another famine, and it needs educated people to lead the country out of this disaster." The report, entitled "Lessons in Repression: Violations of Academic Freedom in Ethiopia", documents what it calls "an ongoing pattern of impunity among federal and state security forces", accusing them of using excessive lethal force to disperse protests by unarmed high school students and the other civilians. It cites the killing, last year, of five high school students who were protesting against economic conditions in Oromiya State, and the arbitrary arrests of hundreds of students, teachers and other intellectuals. The report also cites the killing of more than 40 Addis Ababa University (AAU) students in April 2001. The students had boycotted classes, demanding academic freedom, including the right of the students' union to meet and publish a newspaper.

THE CONTROVERSY OVER NESTLE AND THE ETHIOPIA GOVERNMENT NESTLE is in hot water over demanding £3.7 million from the Ethiopia Government. However the Swiss based multinational has stated that they are to now plough the debt money into Ethiopian aid.
Nestle's demands featured in the guardian and since then there was a public outcry. Peter Brabeck, Chief Executive issued a statement that the proceeds of its claim against Addis Ababa would be used to help the famine which effects the lives of 11 million Ethiopians. He stated 'we are not interested in taking money from Ethiopia when it is in such a desperate state of human need.'
The company realises that it has failed to repair its blackened corporate image even tough they have guaranteed to invest money in building plans in Ethiopia.
Peter Brabeck stated that the company had not abandoned its legal rights against Addis Ababa and intentions to carry out the expensive and complicated negotiations. 'We do think it's important for the long-term welfare of the people of Africa that their Governments demonstrate a capacity to comply with international laws'. He continued 'we hope our commitment will bring the possibility of helping a significant number of people there.

ETHIOPIA: Government ready to distribute HIV/AIDS drugs UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - July 15, 2003 ADDIS ABABA, 15 July (IRIN) - Ethiopia is on the brink of distributing the country's first ever anti-retroviral drugs for treating HIV/AIDS - but only to people who can afford them. The life-saving drugs - which have been imported from India - will sell for around US $40 per person per month, according to the government's anti-AIDS task force on Tuesday. Negatu Mereke, who heads the HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (HAPCO), told a news conference that the drugs would be distributed "in a very short period of time." Some 300 healthcare workers have been trained to deliver the anti-retroviral drugs, which have now been imported, and sites identified for distribution. Dr Yigeremu Abebe, an executive board member of HAPCO, said that Ethiopia couldn't afford to distribute the orally-taken drugs for free to people infected with the virus. "The government cannot buy drugs because it is not affordable from the treasury," he explained. The country's annual health budget is around US $120 million a year.

ETHIOPIA: Government Criticises Attitude Towards Women's Rights UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - June 25, 2003 The Ethiopian government has blasted the "pathetic" attitude towards women's rights in the country which it says is fuelling the AIDS epidemic. It warned that social and cultural factors such as polygamy and sexual violence were exacerbating the vulnerability of the nation's women. In a statement, the information ministry described the threat posed by HIV/AIDS as "terrifying". In Ethiopia, HIV has infected some three million people. The majority - around 58 percent - are women. A million children have also been orphaned. The government warned that limited job opportunities forced girls and women into prostitution and women were often excluded from the labour market. "This is caused by poverty, lack of economic empowerment, harmful customs and traditional practices as well as a low level of democratic culture," the statement said. "In addition, the pathetic level of implementation of human and democratic rights of women enshrined in our constitution contributes its share to the vulnerability of our women to the deadly virus.

ETHIOPIA: Government ready to distribute HIV/AIDS drugs (5)
Usually countries buy their drugs through a central distributing agency such as the non-profit one based in the Netherlands. The agency buys their generic from the best source, often Cipla or Ranbaxburyboth based in India.
