In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), in 1991. A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A two and a half year border war with Eritrea that ended with a peace treaty on 12 December 2000 has strengthened the ruling coalition, but has hurt the nation's economy.

I am interested in the way changes in culture-broadly defined to include social, economic and political organization-affect the use of the physical environment. I believe that if we are to understand and respond to rapidly changing environmental conditions in the world today, we must develop the analytical tools to distinguish between naturally occurring processes of environmental change and those processes that are induced by people. back to top Teaching I teach a wide variety of courses, from a large introductory course World Regional Geography, to upper level seminar courses such as Development and the Environment, Africa: Problems and Prospects, to Population and World Food Resources. My interdisciplinary training at all levels of my education has helped me to develop and teach courses which serve such programs as the International Relations, Environmental Studies, and the Five-College African Studies. The courses I teach include the following.

Southern Ethiopia borders with the Sudan in the west, Kenya in the South, Region Four (Oromia) in the West and Region Fourteen (Addis Ababa) in the North. This region is located about 38 E and 8 N latitudes. Southern Ethiopia is very rich and fertile. There are numerous minerals and Varity of crops that earns foreign currency for Ethiopia. Lots of domesticated and non-domesticated animals exist in the region. There are number of big rivers, streams and lakes in the region too. 95% of forest (some Tropical) of Ethiopian empire exist in this region alone. The density of the population in the area is estimated 1-2 persons per km . The economy of the region is highly lobour intensive. Constant wars in Ethiopia and continuous demand on man power for maintaining the army disrupts the production capacity of many families. Thousands of children are left orphans as these continuous due to wars. As the result, people are mal-nourished and lack resistance to disease. Continuous deforestation and uncontrolled migration of numerous populations from other parts of Ethiopia to this region distorts the ecosystem. The region is one of the most neglected areas in the whole of Ethiopia and an estimated one in thousand people had access to education and information in 1996.

LINKS African geography Relief: Africa is bounded N by the Mediterranean Sea, W by the Atlantic Ocean, and E by the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Its greatest length from N to S is 8,000 km/5,000 mi and its breadth from Cape Verde to Ras Hafun is 7,440 km/4,623 mi. Its area, including Madagascar and the other adjacent islands, is 30,097,000 sq km/11,620,451 sq mi, or three times that of Europe. The coastline is regular, with no deep seas, bays, or river estuaries of any size to afford climatic or commercial advantages; so that in proportion to its size Africa has less coastline than any other continent, its total length being about 25,600 km/15,900 mi. Mountains: The mountains of Africa may be divided into three distinct systems: (1) the Atlas; (2) the west coast; and (3) the east coast. The Atlas Mountains occupy the northern portion between the sea and the Sahara, from Wadi Daa to Cape Bon. The eastern Atlas , 1,830-2,440 m/6,000-8,000 ft high, consist of two parallel ranges enclosing a plateau where salt lakes called chotts are found. The western Atlas , known as the Great Atlas of Morocco, have an average elevation of 3,050 m/10,000 ft, and the highest peaks are over 4,275 m/14,025 ft.
