Ethiopia Table of Contents Ethiopia occupies most of the Horn of Africa. The country covers approximately 1,221,900 square kilometers and shares frontiers with Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, and Djibouti. Its Red Sea coastline is about 960 kilometers long. The major physiographic features are a massive highland complex of mountains and plateaus divided by the Great Rift Valley and surrounded by lowlands along the periphery. The diversity of the terrain is fundamental to regional variations in climate, natural vegetation, soil composition, and settlement patterns.

Demography and Geography of Religious Affiliation
Ethiopia Table of Contents Statistical data on religious affiliation, like those on ethnic groups, are unreliable. Most Orthodox Christians are Amhara and Tigray, two groups that together constitute more than 40 percent of the population. When members of these two groups are combined with others who have accepted Orthodoxy, the total Christian population might come to roughly 50 percent of all Ethiopians. Muslims have been estimated to constitute 40 percent of the population. The largest ethnic group associated with Islam is the Somali. Several other much smaller Islamic groups include the Afar, Argobba, Hareri, Saho, and most Tigrespeaking groups in northern Eritrea. Oromo also constitute a large proportion of the total Muslim population. There are also Muslims in other important ethnic categories, e.g., the Sidamo speakers and the Gurage. In the far north and the east, and to some extent in the south, Islamic peoples surround Orthodox Christians. The only people (variously estimated at 5 to 15 percent of the population) who have had little if any contact with Orthodox Christianity or Islam live in the far south and the west. Included among adherents of indigenous religions are most of those speaking Nilo-Saharan languages and many of those speaking Omotic and Cushitic, including sections of the Oromo, such as the pastoral Borana. It is among these peoples that the few converts to missionary Christianity Protestant and Roman Catholicare to be found.

The Ethiopian topography is best expressed as a complex blend of massive highlands, highly rugged terrain, and remarkable valleys divided by the Great Rift Valley running from southwest to northeast surrounded by lowlands, steppes, and semi-desert. Rivers Eucalyptus planted hillside T he land of Ethiopia provides an extraordinary variety of landscapes, with its huge and lofty central plateau area contrasting totally with its hot deserts and Rift Valley lakes . Five times the size of Great Britain, Ethiopia is home to nearly a hundred different tribes, each with its own language and its own highly colourful and developed culture. Some of these Ethiopian tribes live as simply and naturally as any peoples on this earth. Yet the GondarLink Guide tells of modern and developing cities such as Addis Ababa, the capital, and Mekelle in the north of the country, as well as myriad simple towns and villages spread all over this often inaccessible land. While water is frequently in short supply, major and impressive rivers cut through the Ethiopian countryside, cascading far below ranges of towering mountains with challenging individual peaks such as Ras Dashen in the north.

Many of the mountains in Eritrea are remnants of when Africa was joined to the Arabian peninsula, millions of years ago. Eritrea was known at times as Mareb Mellash ("This side of the Mareb River") or Bahrmeder ("Sealand"). The name "Eritrea" is of foreign origin and has been attributed to a derivative of the ancient Greek cartographic designation, Mare Erythrean ("Red Sea"), fragment 67 of Aeschylus: There the sacred waters of the Erythrean Sea break upon a bright red strand, ...... It was not until the arrival of the Italians in the 19th century however that the country was officially called Eritrea. Eritrea looks like a funnel; wide in the northwest and tapering to a narrow strip in the south-east. Topographically, the country consists of three regions:
