The Tourism Commission aims to tap the growing interest in the traditions of Ethiopia while encouraging artists not to lose ancient craft skills passed down to them. "This is a brand new government initiative to preserve our cultural heritage," said Dr Tewodros Atlabachew, who heads the project at the commission. "But in order to preserve it we have to show the local community that it can benefit both economically and socially," he added. "That is the best way to sustain our heritage."

ARTICLES New Poetic Work By Ethiopian Immigrant Promotes Respect, Courage And Cultural Sensitivity by: Kifle Bantayehu McLean, VA - "The Healing Conscious" tells the story of an Ethiopian immigrant boy on his fascinating journey to America and adulthood. Author Kifle Bantayehu, a 23 year-old second-generation Ethiopian immigrant, recounts this poignant tale in poetic format. His inspirational collection of poems reflects the final words and thoughts of a dying man who traveled across the world, raised a family and became successful-finally fulfilling the American dream. These poems, written in a uniquely modern style, reflect a journey of sacrifice, courage and strength. "The ideals of cultural preservation, respect and love intertwine with each person encountered along the narrator's journey and serve as inspiration to all people, regardless of race religion or sex," states the introduction of the book. Bantayehu says there have been very few work works of poetry written and published by Ethiopian authors. And he feels as though he's breaking new ground for this genre of literature by combining the English language with Ethiopian culture.

Out of Ethiopia
An Interview With Nega Mezlekia
By Therese Eiben
NEGA MEZLEKIA
photo by K.C. Armstrong In the days immediately after the World Trade Center attack and in between my news vigils with CNN and NPR, I read Ethiopian exile Nega Mezlekia's memoir and novel. Probably I would have found uncanny parallels to current events in almost any book I picked up then, so urgently did I need to begin to comprehend what had just befallen my fellow New Yorkers and—yes, I can finally say this without Saturday Night Live irony—my fellow Americans. Given my state of mind, I admit I was susceptible to finding meaning in coincidence. But regardless of whether it was cosmic intervention or just the random luck of his being the author of the next two works in my submission pile, I found Mezlekia to be a wise guide through the chaos of those dark days. Mezlekia's memoir

It is simply where the Ancient World and Africa meet, with influences from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Pre Christian, Judaism and Islamic culture. This cultural melting pot together with its extraordinary landscapes and hospitable peoples makes the country a fascinating place to explore.

For years they have been the victims of abuses by successive Ethiopian governments. They now face renewed human rights abuses and a development project with the potential to further marginalize them. Anuak History The Ethiopian authorities established a claim to Gambela in 1898 while escorting the French expedition mission to disputed land along the Nile in Sudan . Despite their claim on the land, Gambela remained isolated from Ethiopian interference. It came under British administration in 1902 and was used as a British outpost, then was ceded to Ethiopia in 1956 when the British military forces withdrew from Sudan . With the ouster of Haile Selassie in September 1974, a group of military officers seized power. Unlike former regimes in Ethiopia whose purposes were economic and administrative intervention was minimal
