Dress Painting Food and drink ... Music Traditional Ethiopian painting Y et another unique feature of Ethiopian culture is its naïve style of painting that is to be found in every church and in many other locations. This style seems to have remained almost unchanged for centuries. Figures are drawn in two dimensions, almost cartoon-like in their direct and simplistic portrayal, with strong colours and clear lines. The almond-shaped eyes are a particularly appealing characteristic. Church painting in Ethiopia serves a very real purpose, with all the biblical and more localised religious stories being portrayed clearly and simply to inform uneducated people of their traditions and their heritage. European medieval imagery is a clear comparison here. The art of Afework Tekle One modern name is clearly prominent in the world of Ethiopian painting today. Afework Tekle has an international reputation as an artist of immense standing. His works, though clearly based in an Ethiopian tradition, have a new and creative dynamism that is immediately of universal appeal. His vibrant paintings, many of them on very large canvases, are to be seen throughout Ethiopia in museums and galleries as well as on postage stamps and postcards.

are the politically and culturally dominant ethnic group of Ethiopia. They are located primarily in the central highland plateau of Ethiopia and comprise the major population element in the provinces of Begemder and Gojjam and in parts of Shoa and Wallo. In terms of the total Ethiopian population, however, the Amhara are a numerical minority. The national population has usually been placed at between 14 and 22 million.
It is generally estimated that the Amhara, together with the closely related Tigre, constitute about one-third of this total population. One of the most recent estimates gives the number of native speakers of Amharic, the language of the Amhara, as approximately 7,800,000. (cf. Bender 1971:217)

Broad Beds and Furrows: Agricultural Development in Ethiopia
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 2,450 Words Author : Ekaterina Chapotchka; Photographed By Wendy Stone
Ekaterina Chapotchka is a Russian-born journalist working in Nairobi. Wendy Stone is a freelance photographer, also living in Nairobi, who is represented by Gamma-Liaison in New York and Odyssey Production in Chicago. Research for this article was sponsored by the International Livestock Research Institute and has been reedited by permission.
Ethiopia's agriculture and food management have changed considerably over the past thirteen years, particularly since the current government was established in 1991. According to President Negasso Ghidada, in the 1996 production year some 400,000 farmers were involved in a "national extension program" that introduced new ideas, training, and technology in land management. Subsidies were offered to enable the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery to develop and improve crop production.
International assistance was also critical, particularly in the years immediately following the drought. In the late 1960s, cereals amounted to more than 8 percent of the country's entire exports. But by the middle of the 1980s, foreign food aid sometimes reached as much as 800,000 tons of grain. Moreover, international assistance and donations tended to create a mentality of aid dependency among most Ethiopian people, rather than encouraging them to be self-sufficient and productive. In the absence of large increases in agricultural production, it was predicted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that the food deficit would reach 2.5 million tons by 2010.

Land of Timeless Appeal

ith over 80 ethnic groups, the cultures of many different communities pattern Ethiopian lifestyle. With traditions going back to the days of Axum, and the strong religious setting, celebrations and festivals play an important part in daily life.
Ethiopian Festivals With religion playing such an important part in many people's lifestyles, Ethiopia is a land where festivals and ceremonies provide many high points in the calendar. At such times, in towns and villages the people are dressed in their finest clothes. The following are among the most famous festivals: Enkutatash - Ethiopian New Year's day. Maskal - The festival of the finding of the true cross. Gena - Ethiopian Christmas (Jan. 7) Timket - Ethiopian Epiphany Faseka - Ethiopian Easter Kulubi Gabriel Gishen Mariam Sheik Hussein Sof Omar Axum Tsion Id Al Adha Id Al Fetir Maulid Ethiopia still retains the Julian calendar, in which the year is divided into 12 months of 30 days each, and a 13th month of five days, or six days during the leap year. The Ethiopian calendar is almost eight years behind the Gregorian calendar now used in the west. Ethiopian Christmas Day is on January 7th of the Gregorian calendar. Archeological Attractions The remains of "Lucy" which date back 3.5 million years and the recent discovery of amidas, a 4.4 million year old hominid fossil, mark Ethiopia as the cradle of mankind. Both were discovered in Haddar, along the Awash river, in the east of the country. They completed the missing link between apes and men.

The lowlands have a hot humid climate in the Sobat basin, hot and dry in Ogaden and Dancalia. The climate of the highlands depends on the altitude. Ethiopia has the third largest population in Africa, with only 8,4 % living in towns. The Stele Field contains huge granite monoliths or steles are symbols of ancient grandeur (30 meters).

With time, the term "art" has become to mean more than drawing and painting. To our understanding it has come to encompass a variety of expressive fields such as drama, theatre, music and much more. This fairly modern type of inclusion has made it quite a challenge to easily define art. "Culture", as one would expect, simply adds to the complexity. It is with this understanding and inborn knowledge of the unique, complex artistic nature of Ethiopia, that we are unable to give a single definition as to what Ethiopian Art and Ethiopian Culture is. Instead, we have outlined what we think are the most important components.
