162. Kantian Ethics & Christ - Does Christ Agree With Immanuel Kant ?
Argues that Christ's philosophy holds the key to completing Kantian ethics through resolving the dualism of happiness and virtuousness.
http://www.geocities.com/kant_christ
Christ's Reply to Kantian Ethics I have divided this introduction into 4 sections, so that the reader may have a better understanding on what I shall attempt to do in this site through seeing the problem from 4 different viewpoints. Kantian Ethics can also be called the ethics of the metaphysical i.e. with its metaphysical moral will, metaphysical freedom of the will, metaphysical responsibility, metaphysical punishment and justice. Is there really a metaphysical world, or is it merely in one's drunken mind, who is, according to Wittgenstein, bewitched by his language. Let's take a look at the belief in the existence of metaphysical justice. (Note that I'm not in anyway denying the importance of social justice, but only the metaphysical one.) Should the first in a competition be rewarded or should the person who could derive the greatest joy from the award itself be rewarded instead? It seems that the first deserve or ought to be rewarded, just as the moral man seems to deserve happiness more than the sinner. And this oughtness There is absolutely no logical necessity between the concept of deserve and happiness. We feel that the first deserves the reward, and the moral man deserves happiness

Paul-Henri Thiry (Baron) d'Holbach
1. Biography
. Many in Paris coveted invitations to rue Royale, and Holbach's house was the first stop for many prominent international visitors. Holbach's character must have been remarkable to have maintained a salon in which the espousers of political and religious reform met so freely and so often with visitors who either cannot have been accustomed to such open dialogue or who were themselves parts of the establishment under attack. Indeed Rousseau, who himself came to feel unwelcome by the coterie, nevertheless memorializes Holbach in , as the paradoxical figure, Womar, an athiest who nonetheless embodies all of the Christian virtues. In addition to his good character, Holbach's generosity at table (his dinners and especially his wine were famously good) and in supporting many of his acquaintances may explain his success at being both a pillar and a critic of society. Perhaps, also, Holbach was not in the eyes of many of his contemporaries as clearly a radical as some other members of his coterie. He did publish some of the most notorious works of the French Enlightenment, including

Glossary ©Lawrence M. Hinman Absolutism. The belief that there is one and only one truth; those who espouse absolutism usually also believe that they know what this absolute truth is. In ethics, absolutism is usually contrasted to relativism. Agnosticism. The conviction that one simply does not know whether God exists or not; it is often accompanied with a further conviction that one need not care whether God exists or not. Altruism. A selfless concern for other people purely for their own sake. Altruism is usually contrasted with selfishness or egoism in ethics. Areté. The Greek word for "excellence" or "virtue." For the Greeks, this was not limited to human beings. A guitar, for example, has its areté in producing harmonious music, just as a hammer has its excellence or virtue in pounding nails into wood well. So, too, the virtue of an Olympic swimmer is in swimming well, and the virtue of a national leader lies in motivating people to work for the common good. Atheism. The belief that God does not exist. In the last two centuries, some of the most influential atheistic philosophers have been Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Bertrand Russell, and Jean-Paul Sartre.
