stuaries are an important component of the complex and dynamic coastal watershed. The economy of many coastal areas relies on the natural beauty and bounty of estuaries. When those natural resources are imperiled, so are the livelihoods of the many people who live and work along the coast. As our population grows, the demands imposed on our natural resources increase and protecting these resources for all their natural, economic, and aesthetic values becomes even more important.
What Is an Estuary and What Does It Do?
An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where freshwater from rivers, streams, and groundwater flows to the ocean, mixing with the salty seawater. Although influenced by the winds and tides, estuaries are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary's seaward boundary. Estuaries come in all shapes and sizes and go by many different names. They are often known as bays, lagoons, harbors, inlets, or sounds. Whatever the name or type, estuaries provide valuable functions.

U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy releases Preliminary Report
for review by the nation's governors and interested stakeholders. As mandated by the Oceans Act of 2000, the Commission makes recommendations for a coordinated and comprehensive national ocean policy. Coastal environments are strongly influenced by upstream sources of pollution and freshwater inflow, and are subject to an ever-growing coastal population. EPA protects these resources through a watershed approach and its regulatory and cooperative management programs.

6. Estuary-Net Project
EstuaryNet Project supports meaningful partnerships that work to solve non-pointsource pollution problems in estuaries and watersheds through understanding
http://inlet.geol.sc.edu/estnet.html
A telecommunications project supporting the development of coastal non-point source pollution education programs.
PROJECT INTRODUCTION
    Estuary-Net was developed by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System in response to water quality issues arising in coastal areas. This project strives to develop collaborations among high schools, community volunteer water quality monitoring groups, local officials, state Coastal Zone Management (CZM) programs and National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRS) to solve non-point source pollution problems in estuaries and their watersheds.
ESTUARY-NET PROJECT GOAL The Estuary-Net Project supports meaningful partnerships that work to solve non-point source pollution problems in estuaries and watersheds through understanding: the variables and the upland influences that contribute to water quality;
  • the value of long-term data collection and data analysis;

http://inlet.geol.sc.edu/level_1a.html
ACTIVITY 7- SHARE THE DATA
PART A: LOCAL ISSUES
Activity Objective: Students will learn that the data they have gathered is limited, but may indicate potential problems. They will learn that they need assistance from the community in order to begin to address this problem. Estuary-Net Outcome Connections: High schools will form a partnership with their local officials, state Coastal Zone Management programs, and National Estuarine Research Reserves to work collaboratively in problems with problems in estuaries and watersheds. Students will learn how to play a meaningful role in solving local water quality problems. Students will be able to use the scientific process to test a hypothesis and will understand how science and the process of science contributes to decision-making. Assessment: This entire activity is an assessment of all of the information learned through the previous activities. Students are assessed in a number of ways: they brainstorm; they work collaboratively to report about an upland influence on the estuary; telecommunicate their findings; and they create a presentation of their findings for an audience of local officials and other invited guests. Judgements about the reports and presentations should be made using the criteria set at the beginning of the project and any adjustments that have been made to that criteria since that time. Time Needed: 1-2 class periods.

Estuaries and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea, and from fresh to salt water. Although influenced by the tides, estuaries are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary's seaward boundary. Some familiar examples of major estuaries include San Francisco Bay, Puget Sound, Chesapeake Bay, Boston Harbor, and Tampa Bay. Salt Marshes are one typical habitat type occurring commonly in estuaries. Salt marshes are particularly important because they are among the most productive habitats on earth and are home to a wealth of plant and wildlife species. Salt marshes are technically wetlands, but are included here because they are a dominant component of many estuaries.
