Location
Estonia lies on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, just about 80 km (48 miles) south of Finland. Sweden, Estonia’s western neighbor is about 300 km (180 miles) across the Baltic Sea. Russia is to the east, with St. Petersburg just across the north-eastern border. Latvia is Estonia’s southern neighbor.
Estonia is a rather small country, actually small enough to be covered by a day’s driving in any direction. Its territory is not very large, but it is still slightly bigger than Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium or Switzerland. The maximum distance from east to west is about 350 km (210 miles) and from north to south about 250 km (150 miles).

th century. The Estonians are, however, the only people of whom a substantial part (over 10 per cent) converted to the Orthodox faith in mid-19 th century in the hope of gaining economic benefits thereby.

Geography and Economy
by Guidez.net (source: CIA WorldFactBook)
After centuries of Swedish and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe.
Location: Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland, between Latvia and Russia
Climate: maritime, wet, moderate winters, cool summers
Terrain: marshy, lowlands Natural resources: shale oil (kukersite), peat, phosphorite, amber, cambrian blue clay, limestone, dolomite, arable land Natural hazards: flooding occurs frequently in the spring In 1999, Estonia experienced its worst year economically since it regained independence in 1991 largely because of the impact of the August 1998 Russian financial crisis. Estonia joined the WTO in November 1999 - the second Baltic state to join - and continued its EU accession talks. GDP is forecast to grow 4% in 2000. Privatization of energy, telecommunications, railways, and other state-owned companies will continue in 2000. Estonia expects to complete its preparations for EU membership by the end of 2002. Industries: oil shale, shipbuilding, phosphates, electric motors, excavators, cement, furniture, clothing, textiles, paper, shoes, apparel

    Estonia - General information
The Estonians are one of the oldest populations living around the Baltic Sea. The country has permanently been invaded from the outside since the 13th century and during the main part of the country's history the Estonians have been under foreign sovereignity (i.a. Danish, German, Polish, Swedish, Russian and Soviet). ESTONIA Area: 45 227 sq.km. Neighbouring countries: Russia, Latvia and Finland Time: G.M.T. + 2 hour Capital: Tallinn (435 000 inhabitants) Major cities: Tartu (105 000)
    Narva (78 000)
    Average temperature: Tallinn - July + 16
Tallinn - February + 3 Highest mountain: Biggest lake: Biggest island: Saaremaa After centuries of dramatic history and foreign rule, Estonia became independent in 1991, and has rapidly established a functioning parliamentary democracy. Estonia's geographical position is favourable for developing trade relations between East and West, North and South. Within a short time the closed economic system of the former Soviet Union has been abandoned and is developing into an open market economy. This has brought Estonia into the world market again.
    Geography and climate
Estonia lies on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. The longest distance from east to west is 350 km and north to south 240 km. Estonia has many islands, the largest one being Saaremaa.

    REPORT OF ESTONIA*
NATIONAL STANDARDIZATION In the period from 1998 till 2002 there have been several major steps taken regarding the official standardization of geographical names in Estonia. The Place Names Board of Estonia acting under the supervision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has continued the reform of the nomenclature of populated places. On January 1 st , 1998 a new official list came into force that contained 4,509 names with an increase of 1,089 names in comparison with the former list. A more modest increase of about 100 names was achieved on the next stage, one year later, and a few names were added to the list in the following years. Currently the list holds about 4,600 names. At various meetings of the Board also other matters were discussed, e.g. the list of names of islands, standardization of the names of land propery units, some individual names, etc. The Board also approved recommendations on the choice of names for new municipalities that might be formed during the planned administrative-territorial reform. All materials concerning the Place Names Board have been published at its website ( http://www.eki.ee/knn/
