Participants are immersed for two periods of eight weeks each in two distinct societies, Estonian and Moroccan, with sharply contrasting ethnic, religious, linguistic and geographical characteristics. Rooted in the context of language and culture in their respective settings, students examine the universal and culture-specific components of psychological phenomena. In both countries, students study cross-cultural psychology, language, history, arts, and literature in translation. They also conduct an independent research project. The program is offered every second year, in the fall semester. The U.S. faculty leader in the fall 2004 is Greg Buchanan, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Beloit College. The psychology courses extend throughout the program and are taken in both countries. They are taught by the faculty director. All courses, except for Estonian and Arabic, are taught in English by faculty at

Cultural and Educational Contacts
The governments of Estonia and the UK signed an agreement on co-operation in education, science, and culture on July 18, 1996. This agreement has facilitated and promoted co-operative efforts in many different fields. For example, contacts between the University of Tartu and British universities have strengthened.
A good example of co-operation in science and education are the regular conferences held by the Estonian Centre of British Studies at the University of Tartu. The last international conference, held in Tartu in April 2002 was called "Defining Englishness". The next conference will be held in 2004. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the School for Slavonic and Eastern European Studies (SSEES) of the University of London, and the Estonian Ministry of Education jointly fund a scholarship to teach the Estonian language at the SSEES. A Memorandum of Understanding between all parties has been signed for the period until May 2005.
The British Council in Tallinn has supported British art, music, literature, theatre, and film in Estonia, as well as cultural festivals highlighting different regions of the UK. There have been a number of major exhibitions of British art, architecture and design in Estonia in recent years. The British Council has also supported the training of teachers of the English langugage in Estonia.
A number of British non-governmental organisations have assisted and supported Estonian culture and the arts, as well as research. For example, the British Headly Trust has supported the restoration of Tallinn's Holy Ghost Church (

Opening of Norwegian Cultural Evening in Estonia Tallinn
19 November 1996 Prime Minister Vahi, Minister of Culture Allik, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Once upon a time three goats were on their way to graze in the mountains for the summer. All three were named billy-goat Bruse. They managed to outwit and overcome the horrible big troll who lived under a bridge on the road to the mountains. In the end, all three safely reached the green grass of the summer pastures. They became fat and content and probably lived happily ever after. The fairy tale about the three billy-goats - we call them Bukkene Bruse - is known by every Norwegian. So are the three musicians whose repertoire of folk music you will be able to enjoy more of in a little while. Bukkene Bruse - the fairy tale - is part of the Norwegian narrative tradition. Our literary roots, like yours, go back to the middle ages. Fairy tales, folk ballads and poetry were handed down from generation to generation, recited around the fire place in small cottages all over the country. They were first written down in the 19th century, when Norwegians, like Estonians, were searching for a national identity. This search gave rise to great literary creativity in both our countries. To this distinguished list should now be added the name of Erik Fosnes Hansen, the latest Norwegian author to have a novel published in Estonian. Fosnes Hansen's novel "Psalm at Journey's End" - the Estonian title is "Requieem Katkenud Reisile" - was received with great acclaim by the critics when first published in 1990. Today, the book is on best seller lists all over the world.

functions as an information centre, is working in Tallinn in close cooperationwith local partners to arrange events introducing French culture in estonia.
http://www.est-emb.fr/lang_4/rub_575/rub2_577
Cultural Relations
Cultural co-operation between the two countries is active. The French Ambassador and the French Cultural Centre, which work as information centres and organise events introducing French culture in Estonia in close co-operation with Estonian partners, have made major contributions to cultural relations.
A French Reading Room was opened in the National Library and the Estonian branch of the international organization Alliance Fran§aise , which promotes the French language and culture was created.
France supports French language programmes in Estonia. In addition to the aid rendered to four French lyc©es , there is close co-operation with two institutions of higher education - the Centre of French Studies at the University of Tartu and Tallinn Pedagogical University.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry in co-operation with the French Embassy is carrying out an extensive French language study-programme for its officials with the goal that all Estonian diplomats will acquire a basic knowledge of French.
In recent years the works of over one hundred French writers and philosophers have been translated into Estonian (B. Pascal, JJ. Rousseau, A. Gide, S. de Beauvoir, J. Giono, J. Genet, G. Bachlard, A. Mak¯ne, M. Yourcenar and many others). Thanks to some enthusiastic translators, the works of several Estonian authors (J. Kross, V. Luik, H. Kiik and T. •nnepalu) have reached French readers. In 1989 "The Czar's Madman" by Jaan Kross was awarded the prize for the best foreign book (Prix du meilleur livre ©tranger) and in 2002 a collection of poetry by Jaan Kaplinski
