Sports and Culture
I once studied fencing and my coach asked me if perhaps my uncle fenced because he had heard my last name before. Actually I didn't know it, because of the Soviet secrecy, but my second Uncle in Estonia Arne Timusk is a champion rally driver. When I visited in 1993 Arne drove us about in his lada. He told us that he had recieved many free ladas to drive for the Soviet team. Even now after independence he still drives in rallies. He is also an all round sportsman staying fit even inviting us to swim with him in the Baltic sea. My brother has a book that Arnes' daughter Aive brought him when she visited in 1989. The book is about wrestling. In fact, it is the story of a famous wrestler. When in the old town in Tallinn I looked out over the precipice of the old fort. Below was a soccer or football field. The Estonian's enjoy singing. In fact, the revolution that brought Estonia's second chance at independence was callled the singing revolution. My aunt has made regular trips to Estonia to sing in choir groups. There is a large outdoor song hall in Tallinn and I had the pleasure to visit it and would one day like to sing my own English music there.

    Estonia History and Culture
History Through archeological research, it has been determined that the ancestors of the Estonians came from the east and setteled on the Baltic shores about 2,500 B.C. At the beginning of the 13th century the country was conquered by the Teutonic knights, and a class of landowners mostly of German descent was established in the country. The country was governed by a succession of foreign powers, including the Teutonic Order, Denmark, Poland and Sweden. In 1710 Peter I won Estonia from Sweden and made it part of Imperial Russia.

This conference will focus on the changing relations between the environment and human experience and activities, the transformation of places and the practices of their signification over time, and the analysis of changing processes in the environment. Spaces in transition provide grounds for complex semiotic processes, which are also one possible focus of interest. The aim of the conference is to assemble the representatives of different fields of research to discuss the following topics:
PLACE and LOCATION . Environmental aesthetics has mainly treated the environment with respect to its spatial, synchronous aspect, regardless of time. The categories of landscape milieu view and panorama , as well as place and space have, therefore, been observed only as fixed conditions. One of the aims of this section, centred upon environmental aesthetics, is to challenge such points of view and to examine places in terms of the changing elements of the dynamic environment, as narrative nodes. Such forms of representation as literature and film can offer productive parallels here.
PLACES and PROCESSES . This section focuses upon the semiotic processes active in the creation and transformation of cultural environments, the semiosis of the location, and the temporal and spatial conditionality of the cultural environment. The concept of environment is not limited to its concrete forms of manifestation. On the one hand, attention is focused upon the notions of
