The dominant religion in Estonia is Evangelical Lutheranism. Estonians were Christianized by the Teutonic Knights in the thirteenth century. During the Reformation, Lutheranism spread, and the church was officially established in Estonia in 1686. Still, Estonians generally tend not to be very religious, because religion through the nineteenth century was associated with German feudal rule. In 1992 there were 153 Lutheran congregations in Estonia with an estimated 200,000 members. Active members totaled about 70,000 Among other religions in Estonia in the early 1990s there were eighty-three Baptist congregations with about 6,000 adult members, as well as about fifteen Methodist and several Seventh-Day Adventist congregations. Estonia's small Roman Catholic community was visited by Pope John Paul II during a tour of the Baltic states in September 1993, and the Dalai Lama came to Estonia soon after independence, in October 1991. The Jewish community has a synagogue in Tallinn

Cultural Relations
Estonian culture has been presented by many artists and musicians in the US. Among others, Tµnu Kaljuste has worked as a guest conductor with a number of choirs and orchestras in North America. Neeme J¤rvi, in his turn, is the 11th music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra while, in addition, making annual appearances conducting the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Erkki-Sven T¼¼r’s music is also being heard more and more frequently in the US: i.e., his works have been performed at Bang on a Can festival in New York.
The musical achievements of famous Estonian composer Arvo P¤rt have been honoured by his election as the Honorary Foreign Member to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996.
Mark Kalev Kostabi, a provocative Estonian artist and composer born in the US, has created his own world in the heart of the New York City – a giant art studio where about 1,500 paintings are made every year. Kostabi's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Brooklyn Museum; his music has been performed in the US as well.
In their turn, renowned American musicians and groups, such as Kenny Garrett and the Victor Bailey Group, Chicago Beau, Brian Melvin, Mike Stern, Joey DeFrancesco Trio and Terry Lyne Carrington Group have recently participated in the biggest annual international jazz event in Estonia, named Jazzkaar.

Language and Culture
Estonia Table of Contents The Estonian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric family of languages, closely related to Finnish and more distantly related to Hungarian. It is among the most difficult languages in Europe, with fourteen cases for the declension of nouns and complicated rules for their use. There are no articles, however, nor any grammatical gender in Estonian. Indeed, the same word is used for both "he" and "she": tema . Over the years, the language has been standardized, but many dialects and accents remain, especially on the islands. Most of the foreign words used by Estonians come from German. Russian, Finnish, and English also have influenced Estonian, especially in the formation of slang. Estonian culture developed in earnest during the nineteenth-century period of national awakening. Elements of Estonian peasant culture, such as songs and folktales, were brought together by the country's first cultural elite after 1850. Between 1857 and 1861, Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald compiled and published the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), which was based on various folklore themes. Written in verse, the epic tells the story of Kalevipoeg, the mythical ancient ruler of Estonia. Another achievement of this period was the establishment of Estonia's first regularly published Estonian-language newspaper

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tartu - Culture The most beautiful city in Estonia is Tartu - say the lyrics of a well-known song. For this to come true you first of all have to promote one part of it - culture. Therefore several cultural groups and intellectuals help to advance culture and the biggest planner, organiser and executor of cultural, sports and youth events in Tartu - the Department of Culture of the City Government, in turn support them. Close contacts with professional artists contribute to the development and promotion of national culture - the results of that can be enjoyed by the citizens and guests of Tartu when they visit interesting concerts, exhibitions or cultural events in Tartu. Sport life is promoted by big events with masses and masters participating, the most well known among these are undoubtedly Tartu Marathon in winter and Tartu Bicycle Race in summer Tourists from all over the world discovered Tartu only some years ago - at Soviet times the biggest Baltic military aerodrome was situated here and therefore the town was strictly closed for foreigners. But the more hospitable the citizens of Tartu are towards the visitors of their city today. Every year more and more tourists come to visit Tartu. The cathedral was built during several periods of construction and reconstruction, reaching its final shape in the 16th century. During the wars of the second half of the 16th century the building was neglected and started to decay. A fire in 1624 quickened the process. The cathedral was partly restored in 1804-1807 after the reopening of the university in 1802, according to the plans of the first university architect Professor Johan Krause to house the university library. In 1927-1928 the library was extended and in 1962-1964 the wooden constructions of the first floor were replaced by concrete inserted ceiling. New restoration work was started in 1985 and gave the building its present-day look.

Estonia Ever wanted to eat blood sausages washed down with a syrupy liquor of unknown origin, go bog walking and sleep with 80 untouchable nuns and novices? You can do it all in Estonia, the small territory which packs in some charming quirks without ruining your budget. The early years of independence brought hardship, but Estonia is recovering itself. Despite the rapid changes since it recovered its independence in 1991, there's still a lot of tradition, including a language packed with deep 'oo's and 'uu's and thriving folk shindigs. culture: page 2/3 The breakthrough for the Estonian people came simultaneously with that of their cousins the Finns in the mid-19th century. Estonia even has the tune of its national anthem in common with that of Finland , and the national epics of the two countries exhibit common features. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Catholicism vied with Protestantism , the latter winning the ultimate victory. This has led to the focus of Estonians on a literary culture and the written word. A writer would not merely be the author of books, but also a spiritual leader for his people. Culture has thus been a tool of political struggle, since direct manifestations of the political will of the common people were prohibited. Estonia’s greatest writers are Anton Hansen Tammsaare, Eduard Vilde, Marie Under, Betti Alver, Friedebert Tuglas and Karl Ristikivi. The Estonian author most well known throughout the world is Jaan Kross. The most popular contemporary authors are Jaan Kaplinski, Andrus Kivirähk and Tõnu Õnnepalu. During the 1860s, the

The integration of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the European Union strengthens the cultural influence and the economic weigth of northern Europe, Mattias Akselsson reports from Sweden From two millennia of war to a new era of cooperation
Only 25 years ago a simple holiday tour around northern Europe would have been much more complicated than just getting on the plane. When anyone in the United States could move, live and work freely from snowy Washington to sunny Florida, Europe still was a complicated puzzle of dozens of travel visas, stamps, tolls, endless permits and small currencies. The history-rich Baltic capitals were cut-off the rest of the world by courtesy of the Soviet Union and the Nordic countries meant for the average person a remote and isolated territory near the north pole.
It took the Europeans two thousand years and many shameful wars to realize that people do have a better life in peace than in war and that cooperation creates more development than isolation. As the European countries leave aside their historical rivalries and parochial pride, many are now enjoying the benefits of integration and economic cooperation. Like in the US, anyone in the EU can now also move, live and work freely from snowy Finland to sunny Spain: British pensioners can retire in France, Portuguese students can attend Polish universities, Swedish citizens can work in Austria, etc.
