Culture
Estonia's native folklore survived centuries of foreign domination thanks largely to a rich oral tradition of songs, verses and chants on subjects like the seasonal cycle, farming the land, family life, love and myths. The oldest Estonian song type, going back to the first millennium BC, is the runic chant, based on lines of 8 syllables with a theme gradually developing from line to line. Modern Estonian literature began in the early 19th century with the poems of Kristjan Jaak Peterson. The national epic poem, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), was written in the mid-19th century by Freidrich Reinhold Kreutzwald. The giant of 20th century Estonian literature is novelist Anton Hansen Tammsaare. Novelist Jan Kross and poet Jaan Kaplinski have recently received international acclaim. Like Finnish, Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language, which sets it apart from Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian (all members of the Indo-European language family). It's a very Nordic-sounding language with lots of deep 'oos' and 'uus'. Lutheranism and Orthodoxy are the main religions, but only a minority of Estonians profess any religious beliefs. ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tallinn - Culture Tallinn Theatre Tallinn, Estonia is one of northern Europe's oldest towns, dating to 800 AD. Tallinn is a city of culture with a very rich historical legacy. In December 1997, UNESCO inscribed the Old Town of Tallinn into the list of World Heritage List. Many traditional events have found their place in the cultural life of Tallinn. In every five years the Estonian Song and Dance Festival takes place in Tallinn, which begins with a festive parade of the performers to the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The song festival tradition has been followed for more than a hundred years and helped the Estonians to preserve their identity during the years under Soviet rule. The population of Tallinn has been characterised by growth throughout its history, but since the beginning of the 1990s the population has started to decrease, mostly because of negative natural growth and emigration (the latter mainly due to the emigration of citizens of the former Soviet Union). Tallinn is a lively capital city with Estonia's government, embassies, culture, entertainment, commerce and industry all

Old and New in Estonia by Don Barker In the expressive silhouette of Tallinn, Estonia's capital city and largest port, visitors approaching from the Baltic Sea see a distinct personality split into the new and the old. The split can be traced back to 1227, when the medieval town in northeastern Europe was conceded to an order of crusading knights. The Brothers of the Sword divided the colony into the fortress (the upper old town with colorful cobble-stoned streets and an array of castles and churches) and the lower town, which is now developing a modern persona. The city's numerous verticals depict a rich trading past and its journey into the 21st century. The most important and original monument of Estonian Gothic is the old town of Tallinn itself, which is listed as a World Heritage site. A Tour through Old Tallinn The 10th-century medieval "old town" rises up on the chalk-based Toompea Hill. The 454 properties include medieval warehouses and the dwellings of merchants and artisans. All have been preserved along with the important public buildings from the Middle Ages such as the Town Hall. In the old city of Tallinn, the facades of the medieval houses have been redesigned according to later styles of fashion. However, behind them the old building constructions, and the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque interior elements, have been preserved.

Estonia Time and Date Estonia Culture Back to Top The Estonian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric family of languages, closely related to Finnish and more distantly related to Hungarian. It is among the most difficult languages in Europe, with fourteen cases for the declension of nouns and complicated rules for their use. There are no articles, however, nor any grammatical gender in Estonian. Indeed, the same word is used for both "he" and "she": tema . Over the years, the language has been standardized, but many dialects and accents remain, especially on the islands. Most of the foreign words used by Estonians come from German. Russian, Finnish, and English also have influenced Estonian, especially in the formation of slang. The national literature had an earlier beginning, in the 1810s, with the patriotic poetry of Kristjan Jaak Peterson. In the second half of the nineteenth century, romanticism and love of country found equal expression in the poetry of Lydia Koidula, Estonia's first woman poet and a key figure of the cultural awakening. The first Estonian song festival was organized in 1869 in Tartu, attracting some 800 participants and about 4,000 spectators. This event would become a major tradition in Estonian cultural life and was held roughly every five years. At the end of the nineteenth century, Estonian theater also got its beginnings in Tartu with the formation of the Vanemuine theater group.

Culture Estonian culture is that of a nation of a little more than one million people. Along with the language, this culture is the main vehicle for Estonian identity, hence the respect which Estonians feel for it.
The most striking example of the culture of ancient Estonians is their regiv¤rss , i.e. rhythmic verse , as well as their aural tradition of folk song where each line is repeated several times with variations on a theme. Nowadays, such ancient culture is rarely encountered, exceptions being the island of Kihnu and the Setu border region, but such culture is nonetheless preserved and research is carried out on it. Estonians have one of the biggest collections of folk songs in the world, with written records of about 133,000 folk songs.
In the early 13th century, the Teutonic Order sent their crusaders here. The knights were followed up by priests. What remains of that epoch are mainly small country churches with tarred spires, situated near the coast.
The German colonists made their mark on Estonian spiritual, material and everyday culture. By way of this culture, Estonia entered the mainstream of the Occident. The Germans, who lived in manor houses and towns, did not mix with the indigenous population and for several centuries, Estonian and German culture developed in parallel. Over time, the Germans developed their own brand of specifically Baltic German sub-culture.
Through the centuries, Estonia has also been under the tutelage of
