Anthropology and Composition: Some Notes Towards a Descriptive Composition Pedagogy James Luberda, University of Connecticut Before I answer your questions, I feel that some preliminary remarks are in order. Roland Barthes, "Literature/Teaching" (234) Upon further reading, however, I discovered that, even though the WPA of the title was never specifically identified in that article, it was clearly not the one I had in mind. The upside, of course, was the idea for the present essay, for both the work of the writers under the WPA and the writers in my freshman composition classes, while given to different ends and means, deal with much of the same kind of material: personal histories, folk- or family tales, commonplaces, sayings, private and public narratives. However focussed upon a particular text or approach a composition assignment may be, a measure of all of these other texts inform and speak through student essays. Across the country, then, we have a far greater number of writers presently employed, in the guise of students, in recording the world they know. In any given historical moment of verbal-ideological life, each generation at each

The Power and the Glory" nennen.

"The House Encore Me So" : Emily Dickinson and Jenny Lind O
n July 3, 1851, in what Thomas Johnson describes as the poet's only encounter with any "singer or instrumentalist of note," Emily Dickinson crossed paths for a moment with the most vaunted public female of nineteenth-century America, the singer Jenny Lind ( Letters 122). Dickinson witnessed Lind perform in one of two concerts held near Amherst a year before Lind married and settled in Northampton for her honeymoon. News of the concerts and of Lind's marriage dominated the Springfield Daily Republican, the newspaper of choice in the Dickinson household. The concert Dickinson attended took place in a large church in Northampton on a night that in addition to being memorable for Lind's performance was remarkable for foul weather. Torrential rain apparently did little to deter the arrival of ticketholders who, according to the

Freshman College Composition
The Freshman College Composition examination measures the skills required in most first-year English courses. It addresses elements of language and grammar; various types of writing, both formal and informal; and limited analysis and interpretation of short passages of prose and poetry. The exam assumes that the candidate knows the fundamental principles of rhetoric and can apply the principles of standard written English. In addition, the exam requires familiarity with research papers and reference skills. The exam has approximately 90 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. An optional essay section, which is required if the institution to which the candidate is applying requests a writing sample, is also available. This optional section requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to write clearly and effectively. Candidates respond to two of three essay topics. An essay on the first topic is required, and candidates are advised to spend 35 to 40 minutes on it. For the second essay, candidates choose one of two topics, on which they should plan to spend 50 to 55 minutes. The essays will be scored locally by faculty.
Knowledge and skills required
The multiple-choice questions of the exam measure students' writing skills both at the sentence level and within the context of passages. Elements of language, grammar, different styles of writing, and limited literary analysis of short prose and poetry selections are tested. The exam is designed so that an average student who has completed the first-year English requirement in composition can usually answer about half of the multiple-choice questions correctly. The subject matter of the Freshman College Composition examination is drawn from the following topics. The percentages next to the main topics indicate the approximate percentage of exam questions on that topic.

English Composition
The English Composition examination measures the skills developed in most first-year college composition courses. It measures the writing skills needed for college assignments and, in particular, for writing that explains, interprets, analyzes, presents, or supports a point of view. The exam does not cover some topics included in first-year college writing courses, such as research skills or literary analysis, nor does it require knowledge of grammatical terms as such. However, the student will need to apply the principles and conventions expected of academic written discourse. Two versions of the exam are offered. One version (known as the all-multiple-choice version) contains approximately 90 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The other version (known as the version with Essay) has a 45-minute multiple-choice section with approximately 50 questions and another section with one essay question to be responded to in 45 minutes. Please note, this essay is to be typed into the examination software. The essay is scored at central locations by college faculty who teach writing courses. Each essay is read and assigned a rating by two scorers; the sum of the two ratings is weighted and then combined with the candidate's multiple-choice score. The resulting combined score is reported as a scaled score between 20 and 80. Separate scores are not reported for the multiple-choice and essay sections.

Amazon Products Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas,... Giuseppe Verdi was born in 1813 at La Roncole, a small village near Busseto in the Duchy of Parma, Italy, where his father ran a modest general store which also served as the local tavern. But ill educated as he was, his father soon recognized the outstanding musical talent in his son and consulted Antonio Barezzi, a Busseto merchant known for his generosity and musical enthusiasms. With the help of Ferdinand Provesi the cathedral organist, Barezzi assumed responsibility for young Verdi who flourished in his new environment, and by the age of 16 he had started to deputize for Provesi; had a number of his own compositions performed; become a member of the Barezzi household; and was very attracted to their eldest daughter Margherita. Two years later Barezzi sent him to Milan only to find he was already too old to enter the Conservatorio. However he did become the private student of the chief conductor of La Scala, Vincenzo Lavigna, with whom he worked for three crucial years. On his return to Busseto in 1834 he failed to obtain the now vacant post of cathedral organist. Instead he took a local teaching job which brought in just enough salary to allow him to marry Margherita Barezzi in 1836.

Morton Subotnick
Distinguished Composer in Residence at NYU
Spring 1,999 - Spring 2,000 Morton Subotnick is one of the United States' premier composers of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The work which brought Subotnick celebrity was "Silver Apples of the Moon" Written in 1967 using the Buchla modular synthesizer (an electronic instrument built by Donald Buchla utilizing suggestions from Subotnick and Ramon Sender), this work contains synthesized tone colors striking for its day, and a control over pitch that many other contemporary electronic composers had relinquished. There is a rich counterpoint of gestures, in marked contrast to the simple surfaces of much contemporary electronic music. There are sections marked by very clear pulses, another unusual trait for its time; "Silver Apples of the Moon" was commissioned by Nonesuch Records, marking the first time an original large-scale composition had been created specifically for the disc medium a conscious acknowledgement that the home stereo system constituted a present-day form of chamber music. Subotnick wrote this piece (and subsequent record company commissions) in two parts to correspond to the two sides of an LP. The exciting, exotic timbres and the dance-inspiring rhythms caught the ear of the public the record was an American bestseller in the classical music category, an extremely unusual occurrence for any contemporary concert music at the time.

by William H. Youngren

N O composer had a more fortunate life-span than Muzio Clementi. He was born in Rome in 1752, two years after Bach's death, while Handel was still an active figure on the musical scene of London, where Clementi would spend much of his life; he died in 1832, a year before the birth of Brahms , just as Berlioz, Chopin Schumann , and Mendelssohn were getting their careers under way. In 1781 Clementi engaged in a piano competition with Mozart in Vienna, for the benefit of Emperor Joseph II; during the 1790s he shared the stage of London's Hanover Square Concert Rooms with the visiting Haydn ; in 1807, once again in Vienna, he carried on elaborate negotiations with Beethoven that resulted in his becoming the composer's principal English publisher; and on June 21, 1824, he attended the London debut of Franz Liszt . During most of his life he was more famous than Mozart, his reputation exceeded only by those of Haydn and Beethoven both of whom he not only was influenced by but also influenced. In addition, Clementi was one of the premier keyboard virtuosos and teachers of his day, and he ran a highly successful publishing firm that also manufactured pianos. At his death he was buried with high ceremony in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey. Yet today Clementi's name is scarcely known. His monumental

Modern History Sourcebook:
Music and Nationalism
Nationalism was the most successful political force of the 19th century. It emerged from two main sources: the Romantic exaltation of "feeling" and "identity" and the Liberal requirement that a legitimate state be based on a "people" rather than, for example, a dynasty, God, or imperial domination. Both Romantic "identity nationalism" and Liberal "civic nationalism" were essentially middle class movements. There were two main ways of exemplification: the French method of "inclusion" - essentially that anyone who accepted loyalty to the civil French state was a "citizen". In practice this meant the enforcement of a considerable degree of uniformity, for instance the destruction of regional languages. The German method, required by political circumstances, was to define the "nation" in ethnic terms. Ethnicity in practice came down to speaking German and sometimes just having a German name. For the largely German-speaking Slavic middle classes of Prague, Agram (Zagreb) etc. who took up the nationalist ideal, the ethnic aspect became even more important than it had been for the Germans.
