Helping Struggling Writers:
Using Narratives in Secondary Composition Classes
Introduction Creating an Audience Using Collaboration Conclusion Some students at the secondary education level often struggle in their composition classes because they are not prepared to deal with some of the abstract concepts that the discourse of writing requires, such as writing for a non-existent audience. Students who struggle with composition may be struggling because they are not ready to understand such abstract concepts. Students who struggle with expository and argumentative writing may be able to utilize narratives to facilitate their writing process through modeling or other methods. Because narratives are a less abstract form of discourse, teachers can use narratives rather than other forms of discourse to effectively teach composition to struggling writers at the secondary education level. Narratives are a form of discourse that students relate to on a daily basis.

25. Observations-Essays By Randy A. Riddle-Brian Eno And The Microsoft Sound
Journalist Randy A Riddle's essay on the composition of the introductory sound for Microsoft Windows 95.
http://www.coolcatdaddy.com/rand/observations-mssound.html
Brian Eno and "The Microsoft Sound" The other day, poking around my computer, I happened to click on the "Properties" dialogue box of "The Microsoft Sound". This little sound file, which plays each time Windows 95 starts, is familiar to all users of the operating system (at least those users that have a sound card on their PC's). I first got a look at Windows 95 three years ago and the little sound, heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of times since then, has become as familiar and mundane as the other audio of my daily life the alarm clock, the ring of my telephone, the sound of my upstairs apartment neighbor working out on some tortuous exercise machine. But there's something different about the Microsoft Sound something erie, disturbing, and disconcerting. It surprised me to examine the properties of the Microsoft Sound and discover that the "Author" of the sound isn't some Microsoftie, locked away in a room in Redmond with a Visual C++ laptop in one hand and a synthesizer in the other. The Sound was created by the eminent and well-known composer of aural wallpaper for airports and other bland spaces, Brian Eno. It brought to mind the ad campaign when Windows 95 was released and the exorbident amount of cash paid to those living statues of rock antiquity, the Rolling Stones, to "Start" us all up. I was expecting screaming guitars and white-man's faux blues when I installed Windows 95. Instead, I got calming New Age synthesizer.

26. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - An Original Talent Between The Baroque And Classical

Early-music specialist and
conductor Christopher Hogwood
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - An original talent between the Baroque and Classical eras
His music is no longer as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the 18th century, he was known as the "great Bach": Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), Johann Sebastian's second eldest son and the most famous of all musical Bach sons. For those who are familiar with his music or are interested in becoming acquainted with it, a program devoted exclusively to works by C.P.E. Bach has been directed by Horant H. Hohlfeld and will be available for Pay TV from Unitel in late 1998. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the "Sturm und Drang" movement of the late 18th century. Growing out of Baroque music and prefiguring the Romantic era, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel and Telemann, and those of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. C.P.E. Bach believed in the aesthetic tenets of his time, which demanded that music "touch the heart" and "awaken the passions". His works abound in features that were daring and even bizarre in his day, but which we have become accustomed to through the music of the romantic composers: bold harmonic progressions, interjected sections in contrasting tempo, seamless transitions between movements, abrupt changes of mood, rambling passages that seem to be searching for a goal...

Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven"
Poe's symbol of "Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance," as treated in the world-famous poem, and Poe's "The Philosophy of Composition."
- By Christoffer Nilsson
Christoffer Nilsson , also known as Qrisse , is a computer scientist from Sweden. His reason for dedicating his spare time to Edgar Allan Poe is simply the love and respect he feels towards the author and his work. Qrisse's Edgar Allan Poe pages , the former host of the Poe Decoder, has been available on the Internet since late 1995, and was one of the first pages available on-line to provide factual information on Poe's life. The pages worked, and to some extent still work, as a gathering point for Poe enthusiasts on the Internet, and was Christoffer's way into the Poe community.
  • Summary Symbols Words The Philosophy of Composition ... Swedish translation of The Raven
  • Summary
A lonely man tries to ease his "sorrow for the lost Lenore," by distracting his mind with old books of "forgotten lore." He is interrupted while he is "nearly napping," by a "tapping on [his] chamber door." As he opens up the door, he finds "darkness there and nothing more." Into the darkness he whispers, "Lenore," hoping his lost love had come back, but all that could be heard was "an echo [that] murmured back the word 'Lenore!'"
With a burning soul, the man returns to his chamber, and this time he can hear a tapping at the window lattice. As he "flung [open] the shutter," "in [there] stepped a stately Raven," the bird of ill-omen (Poe, 1850). The raven perched on the bust of Pallas, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology, above his chamber door.

    On Industrial Composition
    by John Hawksley
Back in school I was a child prodigy. We had an old Soames upright piano that hadn't been tuned in a long time - possibly ever - and we had that piano for as long as I can remember. I started playing around with it when I was about five years old. I used to play along to the records my mother had in her collection of singles; a big white leather bag held together at the top by a couple of knotted leather strings. The first record I recall accompanying was Georgy Girl by the Seekers; the second being Penny Lane by the Beatles. Both songs are pretty special to me just because they were what got me started. Playing along to those 60's hits taught me how to repeat what I was listening to. The songs we had on vinyl, that I used to imitate, had pretty simple structure and predictable chord progressions, so I got a good feel for the traditional sequences of chords. I never could (still can't) repeat something exactly. I tend to remember the melody pretty exactly, and vamp - make up - the harmonies and the left hand. Most people can't tell the difference. They're the impressed types. The other people - thankfully the minority - know instantly that I'm pulling some kind of fraud. Most of them don't call me on it, but you can see it in their eyes. "You're busking!" they're saying. Touché. When I left school and went to Sixth Form, I was 16 and I took Music (amongst other things). I quickly found out that at A-Level (A-level, or GCE Advanced, are what you do before you head off to University in England) there was a whole bunch of people at least as talented as I was. However, my playing by ear still turned a couple of heads - although suddenly the number of people looking at me suspiciously was going up.

    THE WRITING PAGE
Composition is an important part of our day!
There are many kinds of writing. We may write creatively, using stories and poems to amuse and entertain ourselves and friends. We may also write informally, in the form of letters, or even spoken words, to share information or tell jokes, or persuade our friends to do something we want them to do. Most school writing, however, fits into a different category.
The purpose of most School Writing is to communicate ideas or answer questions. Such writing requires a whole different set of rules. When we tell a joke or story, it is fun to stretch it out, to get the listener all involved as we get further and further into the material, so we can spring the punch line on our listeners: "You stole my golden arm!" or ". . .because he was stapled to the chicken," are great endings for stories because they are unexpected. School writing requires no such surprises. School Writing (and, by extension, Business Writing) must be succinct, terse, and to the point.
I made a rather simple rubric for grading essays.

Advanced Composition Essay Digital Cellular Phones By: Heidi VanLaecken E-mail comments to : vanlaech@pluto.dsu.edu On Tuesday September 11, 2001, many people were searching for their cellular phones just minutes before the attack on the World Trade Center. Many of the people that had evacuated the building were trying to get a hold of their loved ones to let them know about the attack. People who were trapped under the buildings were trying to notify the outside world of their whereabouts by using their cellular phones. Today, cellular have made people’s view on them change. They have gone from becoming a nuisance to being a necessity in their pockets and purses. Cellular phones were considered a nuisance because they were distracting drivers and causing accidents and killing people. Cellular phones have changed over the years. At first, there were just the regular wireless phones and now the companies have come up with digital cellular phones. Digital cellular phones have more advantages than a regular wireless phone. However, like any other product on the market, there are also a few disadvantages.

Winter Composition We're sharpening our writing skills with a composition that's based on the topic of "Winter." Prewriting
  • Write as many brainstorming ideas and notes as you can about the following winter-related ideas. This will count as your journal this week. Expectation is the 500-650 words in a regular journal. However, it will be due sooner than next week. You should be done by Thursday. Grade is ALL OR NOTHING – if it looks like you didn’t do much work, you get no grade. (The “O-Town Clause.”) Write in Outline form. Use lots of paper. Leave yourself great spaces to add ideas. Remember - This is BRAINSTORMING – Let your mind wander. There are no “wrong” answers!
  • Outline:
  • Sensory Details
  • A) Sight – see B) Sound – hear C) Smell D) Taste E) Touch- feel F) Multi-Sensory
  • Happenings
  • A) Events/Holidays B) Things to do C) D) Memorable events E) Others?
  • Media -
  • A) B) Holiday Winter C)
  • Miscellaneous
  • A) Colors B) Symbols C) D) Real Fictional Topics - Choose one and write a rough draft. Look at ALL of the ideas you wrote down in your outline. Does something jump out at you as a "Spark" of something you'd like to explore and write more about? The go ahead, write about it! Or, find some other things you think are workable. Jot some notes to see which has the best possibilities.

In general, a value of "[S:0]" or the total absence of the code notes that the text has been entered, but not yet verified. Anyone who has ever tried to proofread a large volume of text will appreciate the inherent difficulties.
