    Esperanto - The International Language
In 1887, Polish physician L.L. Zamenhof published a book under his pseudonym called Doctor Esperanto's International Language and Complete Handbook . This initial text, which was both a tutorial and the manifesto for a new social movement, spread the word of a new international language known as Esperanto. At the time, there had been dozens of international languages already created. Many of these artificial languages were like Esperanto in the fact that they were created to be an axillary language, that is, a second language for people around the word in order to allow for improved global communication. Of all of the artificial languages, it was Esperanto which caught on the best. Though today there are only between a few hundred thousand and a few million speakers of Esperanto around the word, those devoted to advancing the goal of the international language are as dedicated as ever. There over 100 newspapers, magazines, and journals printed in Esperanto and many books are written in or translated into the language by devotees of the language and its movement.

    88. Esperanto
Estimates of the number of speakers range from tens of thousands to over a million. There are even a few people who speak esperanto as their first language.

    Esperanto
    Origin
Esperanto is an international auxiliary language devised in 1887 by Dr. Ludovic Lazar Zamenhof (1859-1917), a Jewish Eye Doctor, under the pseudonym of "Doktoro Esperanto". He originally called the language "La Internacia Lingvo" (The International Language), but it soon became known as Esperanto, which means "the hoping one". Zamenhof was born in the Polish city of Bialystok which at that time was home to a polyglot, multiethnic mixture of Poles, Russians, Jews, Lithuanians and Germans. He believed that much of the distrust and misunderstanding between the different ethnic groups was a result of language differences, so he resolved to create an international language which could be used as an neutral lingua franca and could help break down the language barriers. Zamenhof's first work on Esperanto, the "Unua Libro" (First Book) published in 1887, contained 920 roots from which tens of thousands of words could be formed, together with the "Fundamenta Gramatiko" (Grammatical Foundations), which consisted of 16 basic grammatical rules. Zamenhof renounced all rights to Esperanto and encouraged comments and suggestions on the development of the language. The first Universal Esperanto Congress (La Unua Universala Esperanto Kongresso) was held at Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1905.

    91. ESPERANTO, A WESTERN LANGUAGE
esperanto, A WESTERN language ? In practice, on what language does one fall back when mutual comprehension is needed and esperanto is not used? On English!
    http://www.geocities.com/c_piron/westernlanguage.html
ESPERANTO, A WESTERN LANGUAGE ? If you examine Esperanto from the outside, you’ll be tempted to consider it a Western language. Its pronunciation will remind you of the sounds of Italian and its vocabulary has, to a large extent, a definite Romance flavor. If you have the opportunity to hear a conversation in that language, you will soon notice that "yes" is used just as in English and is pronounced in the same way (but it is written jes ). This will seem to confirm the Western nature of the language. If, being more conversant with linguistics and listening more carefully, you perceive a relatively high proportion of Germanic roots, you will conclude that it is indeed a Western language, and that, just as in English, its words are of both Latin and Germanic stock. If you have studied Greek, you will find it a bit more Eastern than you thought at first. "And" translates as kaj (rhyming with I ), which is the exact equivalent of the ancient Greek kai , and plurals are apparently inspired by Homer’s language. In ancient Greek, parallelos 'a parallel line' becomes in the plural paralleloi 'parallel lines'; in Esperanto, the plural of

    Informatie in het Nederlands

Svenska Deutsch Cymraeg Italiano Hrvatska The purpose of this site is to provide information on the international language Ido. Ido is a reformed and improved version of the constructed language Esperanto, the late 19th Century brainchild of Polish amateur linguist Dr. L.L. Zamenhof. Ido was the product of the Delegation for the Adoption of an International Auxiliary Language, which met in Paris in 1907 to decide on an international language to allow easier communication between the peoples of the world. In a world of over 7500 languages, the need for an easily acquirable international tongue is self-evident. Esperanto, it was felt, was unsatisfactory for this purpose, and so the Delegation recommended the revisions which led to the development of Ido. On this page you will find a history of the language Ido, a first course in two stages to get you started, and at the end of stage 2 you will find out how to progress your Ido skills even further. I hope you enjoy this brief look at the first international language ever to be founded on thorough scientific study.

"This is an exciting time for Esperanto", says editor of Esperanto Britain, Ian Fantom, "There is a growing awareness of the language problem, and of the problems arising when you impose one culture on another. Esperanto has really sprung to life in recent years for many people who in the past would normally be just practising the language in local clubs, and who would only occasionally use the language 'for real', when travelling abroad, or accepting foreign guests. The arrival of the Internet, cheap voice communication, and low-cost travel are now encouraging thousands of people to use Esperanto on a daily basis".

    This rant has been removed
If you're looking for my lengthy and very detailed attack on Esperanto, I've got rid of it. I frankly got sick of having to respond to the emails it was generating, and it seemed rather silly to make my opinions public without allowing anyone the chance to bite back. So I decided, especially since better criticisms are available anyway, that the rant should be dumped in the Great Bit Bucket. If you're really desparate to read the original, you might find a copy over at the Wayback Machine . But please note: the Wayback machine is someone else's project, and as far as I am concerned my rant no longer exists , and for this reason I will not engage in any debate over its contents . Any emails which imply that the sender does not understand the italicised text will be either ignored altogether, or replied to very rudely if I'm in a bad enough mood. You have been warned! I don't doubt that Esperanto gives great pleasure to a lot of people. This does not, however, equate in my mind to it being a model of good conlang design, never mind of good auxlang design; and I still think it's a shoddy, half-baked, and generally unsatisfying mess. I'm just no longer willing to get involved in discussions about a subject about which I really care very little. In the meantime, I remain grateful to everyone who previously contacted me in reply to my rant, whether you agreed with me or not, especially the polite Esperantists whose opinions I failed to change in any significant way.

Esperanto as a Second Language? Well, there was a time U.S. military commanders thought that was a good idea, as these excerpts from an Army field manual show. Seems the brass wanted the would-be international language to be used by one side during training exercises. In fact, "Aggressor" referred to a fictitious nation created by the Army to serve as its opponent in these "war games." We doubt Latin was considered for the foe's language, but Klingon would have been a better choice. (13 pages) How you say "Adios, Osama" in Esperanto? Only a few clams: The Smoking Gun's first book.
