http://www.albany.edu/lap/Papers/Catalyst.html
Technology as Catalyst for Child Advocacy in ESL Teacher Training Carla Meskill and Richard Light University at Albany, State University of New York Abstract This paper describes an innovative training program for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) that promotes the use of instructional technologies as both language development tools for Limited English Proficient (LEP) students and as tools for dialog with those responsible for supporting LEP children in the schools and community. The central theme of the training is the expanded role that technology can play in bringing together those persons directly involved in supporting the linguistic, cultural, and academic growth of English as a second language (ESL) children in the public schools; that is, mainstream teachers, administrators, community leaders, and parents. Technology, it is proposed, can serve as a catalyst to promote and cohere understandings about the needs, goals, and promise these children bring to their learning. Background The United States has always been a multilingual nation. From the hundreds of languages spoken by Native Americans to the scores of tongues spoken by immigrant peoples, Americans have often viewed this linguistic diversity as either a blessing or a simple fact of life. The writers of the Constitution carefully omitted any constitutional provision establishing an official language and many of the Founders were themselves bilingual. The public and private use of a variety of languages was often treated as business-as-usual in a nation with people from many linguistic and cultural backgrounds (Daniels, 1990; Crawford, 1991).

Considering a career in
Teaching English as a Second Language
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between "ESL" and "TESOL"? A: Not a whole lot. Technically speaking, "ESL" stands for "English as a Second Language," and is best used to talk about what you'd be teaching. "TESOL" stands for "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages," and is best used to talk about what you will study in order to teach ESL. As you can see, they're not exactly the same—but they overlap a lot. (By the way: TESL = "Teaching English as a Second Language"; TEFL = "Teaching English as a Foreign Language.") Q: I'm interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in a Texas Public School, grades K-12 . Who should I talk to? A: You should first talk to the UTA School of Education (Hammond Hall, 5th floor)
I f you are planning on teaching in a Texas Public School, either by obtaining regular or "emergency" certification, you must speak to the staff in the School of Education. These education specialists will provide you with information about certification, endorsement, etc.

These activities are useful for teaching inductively, filling gaps and introducing topics. Here is a list of five books that are sure to help you times of need. Grammar Games
Teaching grammar through games has proven to be one of the most successful methods of helping students acquire grammar skills. "Grammar Games" by Mario Rinvolucri succeeds exceptionally well while encouraging students to enjoy themselves. This book is my top choice because it's a great way to expand on key concepts that can be rather dry at times.
Great Ideas : Listening and Speaking Activities for Students of American English

"Great Ideas" Leo Jones, Victoria F. Kimbrough provides realistic situations for ESL learners of American English. Situations and speakers are taken from daily life confronting learners with 'authentic' accents and providing help in learning English they can use on a daily basis.

Significant Points
  • Many adult literacy and remedial and self-enrichment teachers work part time and receive no benefits; unpaid volunteers also teach these subjects.
  • Opportunities for teachers of English as a second language are expected to be very good, due to the expected increase in the number of residents with limited English skills who seek classes.
  • Demand for self-enrichment courses is expected to rise with growing numbers of people who embrace lifelong learning and of retirees who have more free time to take classes.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Self-enrichment teachers teach courses that students take for pleasure or personal enrichment; these classes are not usually intended to lead to a particular degree or vocation. Self-enrichment teachers may instruct children or adults in a wide variety of areas, such as cooking, dancing, creative writing, photography, or personal finance. In contrast, adult literacy and remedial education teachers remedial or adult basic education (ABE) , which is geared toward adults whose skills are either at or below an eighth-grade level;

After three 3-month terms, she was beginning to sight-read when she started experiencing severe abdominal pains. Her attendance dwindled. At school, her pain distracted her. One day she reported that she had been to the emergency room; her children had been told that their uninsured mother needed an operation very soon. As the operation date approached, Luz said she was very nervous. Never having studied in her native country, Luz knew nothing of internal organs.

ESL Lessons for Adult Students
Nearly 80 percent of U.S. immigrants are 18 or older. Always motivated, though frequently frustrated, these adult learners present school districts with unique challenges and exciting opportunities. Do your adult ESL programs measure up? Included: Online activities for review, reinforcement, practice, or drill
According to figures compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau , almost 80 percent of the 26.4 million immigrants living in the United States are older than 18. The National Clearinghouse for ESL Literacy Education (NCLE) reports that in 1998, 2 million adults and out-of-school youths enrolled in U.S. Department of Education-funded ESL programs. The sheer numbers of those adult ESL students demonstrate that English-language programs cannot stop at the doors of the high school but must be included in district-run continuing education programs. Is your district able to meet the challenges these students present?
