Teacher Training and Development Courses for training teachers fill universities. Therefore this is only a handful of books that address the subject. There is a real need for more teacher training in the field of adult ESL literacy, especially for adults in the workplace. There is also a real need for on-site literacy classes at companies that hire immigrant labor. Since most communication occurs in English, being able to get the company's needs met may very well mean that they do more to provide ESL classes to their employees. Their employees are generally not able to attend school and become literate in English in an academic environment. The need to be working full time, care of children, lack of dependable transportation, all keep most workers limiited to what they can do. Community colleges can go a long way towards assisting business set up work-site classes and fill the gap of providing instructors to business and industry.

Yager Receives Excellence in Adult Teaching Award LCPS Coordinator of Adult Education Irene Riordan nominated Yager for the adult education award. "It would be difficult to imagine our program without Victor’s presence," Riordan wrote in her nomination. "Victor sets an example for cooperation and competence as an adult ESL instructor. … "Victor encourages his students to learn English in just about every imaginable way. He might perform as a storybook character, lead a sing-along or direct a chant. … "His warm and outgoing nature draws students in and helps them to forget their self-consciousness or timidity. He brings the class to life! It is impossible to sit in Victor’s class and not be mesmerized by the magic." In addition to his work with LCPS, Yager has taught adult ESL classes for Fairfax County Public Schools and Northern Virginia Community College. Yager first came to LCPS 26 years ago as a language arts and social studies teacher at Simpson Middle School. It was while Yager was teaching fifth grade at Meadowland Elementary that Principal Dennis Young encouraged him to become an adult ESL teacher. (Yager began his 21

Pictures from Teaching in China 1988 - 1991
William R. Eubank
Between February 1988 and March of 1991 I lived and taught in the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong. I went to China to teach and took every opportunity to teach that was offered to me - so there were many opportunities - in both formal and informal situations. I came to China under the sponsorship of University Language Services. The pictures on this page are between 8K and 56K in size and load pretty fast. I will try to add others later as I get them scanned in. Your picture will be taken while you are a "foreign guest" in China. Yunnan Province has a population of about 35,000,000 Han and minority people - the number of foreign semi-long term residents was about 70 in 1989 - you may or may not be aware of your picture (18K) being taken - often your students will bring a copy after publication. Kunming Teacher Training College did a little article (10K) about me in the school paper when I arrived. My students were from the rural counties of Yunnan. They were training to be English teachers for middle schools and high schools located outside of the provincial capital of Kunming. Many of the students expressed the idea that their college years would probably be some of their best since they knew when they returned to their villages that there might be little opportunity to travel back to the capital city. The school had a very modern language lab (8K) from Japan that I used much of the time. During each school holiday, I had the opportunity to travel to rural areas and visit the hometowns and future schools of my students. Most of my classes had between 30 and 40 students. Many elementary classes I visited had up to 50 students.

Teaching ESL to Adults
A look at the challenge of teaching English as a second language to adults in a multilevel class. Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format: MLA Written: Author: AcaDemon
Abstract
This paper looks at how there are many strategies that can be used within the ESL classroom that will assist both ESL adults and children in their goals of effectively maneuvering through their new English-speaking world. It examines how adult ESL learners are especially helped by conversation and communication styles as the subtleties of the impact that culture has upon language may be one of the hardest lessons they have to learn.
From The Paper
"There are many strategies and or styles for the integration of communication into the ESL classroom, several of which are outlined by Peyton and Crandall in Philosophies and Approaches in Adult ESL Literacy Instruction. Within this work Peyton and Crandall briefly review each of the five major ESL approaches: Freirean or participatory education, whole language, language experience approach, learner writing and publishing, and competency-based education. Within all five of these proven successful approaches the reader can see the import and impact of interpersonal communication on the learner."

Jean Marson-Bayat - May 2004
Currently teaching in Newcastle (employed by Adult Ed, teaching adults in various venues throughout the city) Positive aspects: We're a team, led by an ESOL specialist, working to supply the needs of the various students who want to learn ESOL. Many of our students are Asylum Seekers, although we also get people from the local ethnic communities, and now occasionally some older people, who have retired and finally find they have time to really learn English, as opposed to just "picking it up as they go along" as they had done previously at work. Negative aspects: some of the venues available to us (and as with most Adult Education provision we constantly feel under funded!) are not ideal - for example, community centres where there is no space for storage of materials, so necessitating much carrying around of materials and paperwork, and old school buildings with many stairs.

Many of the current TESL Ontario members took out their certification in 2000. At that time they were informed that the renewal of their certificates in 2005 would require that they be continuous members of TESL Ontario, have proof of professional development, and 400 hours of teaching in the adult ESL over the 5 years.
However, the requirements have changed since the TESL Ontario' s board meeting Jan.25, 2003. For the renewal of TESL Ontario Certificates only continous membership and 25 hours of professional development over 5 years are required.

Harvard University
Abstract
It is estimated that in the United States 15% of the general population has a learning disability (Monarez 1992, p. F3). It is possible that many of the ESL students whom we view as poor language learners are struggling because they too have a learning disability. In many countries, learning disabilities are not recognized or, in some cases, they are recognized but not dealt with. This paper is meant to be a basic primer on learning disabilities. It will describe classroom behaviors associated with several common learning problems, the results of research into them and it will offer practical suggestions to classroom teachers for working more profitably with these students. According to Dr. Melvin Levine, Director of the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Learning Disability is the term currently used to describe a handicap that interferes with someones ability to store, process or produce information. Such disabilities affect both children and adults. The impairment can be quite subtle and go [-1-] undetected throughout life. But learning disabilities create a gap between a persons true capacity and his day to day production and performance. Its not always immediately obvious that a person has a learning disability. The most straightforward indication is academic failure or underachievement by someone who seems capable of more (Levine 1984, p.1).
