by Lovelyn Hunter Back To This Issue's Index Subscribe Send a Letter to the Editor Maybe you’ve just graduated from college and are still unsure about what you want to do. Maybe your nine-to-five-grind has grown tiresome, and you’re ready for a change. If you’re looking for adventure, you might want to consider teaching English aboard. ESL teachers are in demand throughout Europe and Asia. Some jobs require that you have a TEFL/TESL certification, but there are also quite a few jobs that only require a bachelor’s degree in any subject. While most contracts are for a year, it is also possible to get six-month contracts from some companies. There are a few things you should consider before packing your bags and boarding a plane to a foreign land. Where do I want to go? Asia is overflowing with ESL teaching jobs. Japan and Korea have the biggest markets. If you want to build up your bank account, it’s best to go to one of these countries. Many ESL teachers who teach in Japan and Korea use these countries as their home bases. They work for a while, save up money, then travel until their money runs out. Then they return to find more work and save up more money. It can be an endless cycle, if you want it to be. Working in China and other areas of Asia can be fun and culturally rewarding but don’t pay very much money. You can make enough to live but can’t really save. Working in Europe is not as lucrative as working in Asia, and because of the

Teaching Adults
A dults bring life experiences and a level of maturity into the classroom that children and adolescents do not. Their expectations and motivations reflect this. Here are several keys to keep in mind when teaching adults:
  • Adult classrooms may present great diversity
Be prepared for diversity of cultural background, age, previous formal education, previous exposure to English, life experiences, and current life situations. Adults respond well to knowledgeable, enthusiastic teachers
You must be comfortable with the subject matter you are teaching and communicate enthusiasm for the subject matter and your role as a teacher. This will help you gain respect and is especially important if you are younger than your students. If you must teach material which is challenging for you, try not to communicate a negative attitude about the material to your students. If a student asks a question which you can't answer, don't be afraid to say, "I don't know, but I'll find out for you." Adults are not too old to learn a second language well
Although native language learning and literacy are best accomplished in childhood, when it comes to learning a second language, research has shown that adolescents and adults outperform children. Adolescents even surpassed children in pronunciation skills. One of the reasons children appear to acquire a second language faster than adults is simply that they get a lot more practice with other children and have lower inhibitions, but many adults have attained a high level of fluency in a foreign language.

TESL Training
Training, Professional Development and Certification Throughout the year there are a number of opportunities for people who want training to teach ESL or provide settlement support to immigrants. Teaching ESL (TESL) to adults is a field of educational expertise with its own body of professional knowledge and skills. Programs generally look for a combination of training and experience when hiring staff. People who want to become Adult ESL teachers can earn TESL certificates or degrees from several post-secondary institutions in Manitoba. For practicing teachers there are also a number of professional development (PD) opportunities offered each year through professional organizations. People who volunteer with ESL students can also participate in special training sessions offered throughout the year. Training sessions for people working in the settlement field may also be available each year.

ESL for LITERACY LEARNERS What is a Benchmark?
It is "a standard, a reference point, a criterion by which to measure something."
What is a Canadian Language Benchmark for English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction? It is a description of a person's ability to use the English language to accomplish a set of tasks.
Why do we need a set of Canadian Language Benchmarks? The teaching and learning of ESL for Adults in Canada involves tens of thousands of people in many different kinds of places: schools, colleges, community centres, universities, factories, offices, hotels, church basements, libraries and so on. Classes may be full or part time, days, evenings or weekends. Learners come from all over the world with a huge variety of languages and educational backgrounds. With all these differences, it is not surprising that there has been no common set of standards for measuring language learning among adult ESL learners.
