11. Subject-Specific Knowledge

12. Design and Management of Learning

13. Child Development, Learning, and Diversity
...
14. Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues
Preservice teachers are required to develop a technology portfolio with evidence to support skills associated with these major categories of competencies. Each category is subdivided into more specific technology-related skills. Preservice teachers need evidence supporting competency in each subskill. The following is a list of these subskills and some suggestions for the types of evidence that would meet the requirements for these skills. These are only suggestions for those who need ideas. Other projects and pieces of evidence may also meet the requirements. Each preservice teacher must determine what evidence to put into the technology portfolio.

Subscribe to the About English as 2nd Language newsletter. Search English as 2nd Language Using the Internet to teach English for Special Purposes (ESP) One of the problems that faces many English as Second Language (read ESP, ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESOL, TOEFL etc.) teachers is that students expect the teacher to be incredibly knowledgeable about everything ! By using the methods below in the example lesson - actually you will probably need at least two lessons - you can give your students "real world" English in their specific field, help them improve their industrial jargon AND understand how companies in their sector express themselves in written English. You will also pick up quite a lot of useful materials that can be used in future lessons. It's quite a nice little exercise for everyone involved! The Internet offers some truly unique opportunities that can give teaching new impetus and be quite a lot of fun for the students. One of these new opportunities is the ability to translate an entire Internet page from English into a target language, or, vice-versa, translate from another language into English. This ability to translate from English into a target language is especially important in business English. Learners can quickly improve specific target vocabulary, improve writing style. Most importantly, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) students get a feel for how English is used in their applied field.

Admissions Policy Middle School retains a relatively open policy on admissions from the Elementary School but serious consideration is given to students with special requirements to assess whether the school can cater for their needs or whether their families should seek alternative schooling. As the academic programme becomes more rigorous it becomes more difficult for ISM to cater for students with special needs. An extensive support system in English language is available for those who do not have a full command of this language but during the admission process we seek to identify any other special requirements and discuss intervention and targets with families if they are encountered. If problems arise with academic learning during Middle School, the student's family will be involved in discussion about appropriate intervention and psychological testing and diagnosis may be required. Discussion will also focus on alternatives to ISM for students whose long-term prospects may not be best suited to the academic course available in High School. We do not normally enrol children from Italian schools into Middle School unless the family is preparing to move to another country. However, we welcome the children of Italian families returning to their home country after a period abroad.

English as a second language (ESL) students who have had limited or interrupted schooling in their first languagewhom we refer to as literacy students can be overwhelmed by new experiences in ESL and content courses. They must learn in a linguistically and culturally unfamiliar environment, construct understanding without the background knowledge that their classmates employ to make assumptions, and process new information. All too often, these circumstances lead to frustration for both literacy students and their teachers. Literacy students must have access to math content from the beginning of their formal education. This calls for modifications in the curricula and in the delivery of instruction. By integrating math and language teaching, innovative courses can provide experiences that bridge gaps in literacy students' math knowledge, expand their communicative competence in English, and ultimately prepare them for success in future math coursework.
Correlating Mathematics with Language Skills Building
In response to the call for the reform of mathematics education in the United States, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) established a Commission on Standards for School Mathematics in 1986. This led to publication of

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The presence of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students in special education settings has raised a number of questions about the special needs of these students and about effective ways to meet these needs. Just as special education students require specialized instructional programming to account for identified disabilities, mainstream LEP students require tailored educational services that account for their second language status. It is, therefore, reasonable to posit that exceptional LEP students require highly specialized programs formulated on a well-articulated, integrated knowledge base from special education and bilingual/ESL education.
SPECIFIC NEEDS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS
Special Education is instruction designed for students who require some degree of modification in their educational programs because of intellectual, emotional, sensory, or physical impairments (Glass, Christiansen and Christiansen, 1982). Modifications may include special curricular materials, specialized teaching strategies or behavior management techniques, and specially-designed equipment or facilities. Students with mild disabilities can succeed with modifications in mainstream classrooms. Other students whose disabilities range from moderate to severe in nature require placement in special settings. All special students, regardless of the type or degree of disability, share certain rights and needs, including:

This project acquaints learners with community events and activities, and local destinations; help learners acquire trip-taking skills like how to read maps, what to bring on a hike, etc.; makes connections with other ESL programs from around the country through helping "Jay" travel across the United States; exposes learners to new experiences through web-based tours of local destinations and distant places posted by other ESL students; and most importantly, it makes learning English fun! As an added bonus, learners will know where to take their families after the project. The format of this project can easily be adapted to suit other ESL programs. Instructors can take their students on similar trips and utilize our web version of Jay's Adventures Across the United States to take students on virtual tours of other cities and towns. Click here!
