Teaching Writing to ESL Students
Introduction
Teaching composition to ESL students is like teaching someone how to drive a stick-shift on a car you love. Some students will probably choose the simplest routes, with the least chance for stalling on a steep incline, while others will lurch toward the highway, frantic to keep up with the rate they believe everyone else is driving. In any case, the teacher can't cringe when the car sputters to a stop from a 10 mph crawl, can't flinch when gears grind like an ogre's gnashing teeth. At the same time, that teacher does have to know when to stop a student from pulling a maneuver that could lead to a five-car pileup or send the car's engine into heat stroke. Below are some strategies for dealing with ESL students' needs. Much of the material is adapted from Understanding ESL Writers: A Guide for Teachers by Ilona Leki, published by Boynton/Cook Publishers, and Chapter 7 of Writing in the Center: Teaching in a Writing Center Setting by Irene L. Clark.
Personal Influences on How ESL Students Learn to Write
Language Overload
International students will commonly backslide, making errors they had seemed to master on previous papers, because their knowledge of English (and how it interrelates with the language or languages they already know) is constantly shifting and stretching. A student may indiscriminately apply rules, writing "She cans do it" because he has learned that a third-person singular, present tense verb will have an "s" on the end. This can be frustrating for the teacher and the student, but it may (as long as the student tries to understand mistakes) be integral to language acquisition.

The ever-increasing multilingual student population at Boise State, as at most colleges across the nation, is creating a wonderfully diverse atmosphere on campus. Alongside the virtues of a diverse campus, however, come some unique learning issues for these students and pedagogical issues for faculty. The national organization of college writing instructors, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, has addressed these issues in a position statement urging college personnel to "recognize the regular presence of second-language learners . . . , to understand their characteristics, and develop instructional and administrative practices that are sensitive to their linguistic and cultural needs." (See the full text of the CCCC position statement As a means of supporting and integrating non-native English speaking students into academic life, Boise State currently offers three programs:

Entry into the School System Arranging for schooling is a major event in the adjustment of families who are newcomers to Canada. The attitudes and expectations of students and their families may be different from those most familiar to school personnel. Therefore the process of entry into the B.C. school system needs to emphasize the welcoming and orientation of newcomers and their families. Entry procedures for students in ESL are sometimes centralized and handled at the district level or they may be school-based. Regardless of whose responsibility it is, the process used to welcome families and ensure the appropriate initial placement of students should include:
  • registration welcoming and orientation of students and their families including information about the school system initial assessment to determine placement into a school or into a particular group or classroom
The order in which these activities occur varies, and the following information is not intended to endorse any particular sequence. It is important to bear in mind that the welcome ESL students and their families receive is the first step in establishing a positive home-school relationship.

Foreign Students Held in Exam Probe (Current usage/news)
Dozens of foreign nationals studying at U.S. universities were arrested today after they were caught paying other people to take English tests needed to enroll in the schools, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey said.
The arrests followed a series of complaints received by the New Jersey-based Educational Testing Service, a testing body used by schools across the United States.
Those arrested included students who paid to have the exam taken for them as well as students who took the tests for others. The charges involve the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL exam.

Summary:
This book discusses how ESL college students in the academic literature/composition classroom use various learning styles in their reading and writing. Tucker uses the research of contrastive rhetoric to help explain why ESL students choose certain learning strategies to read and write in the ESL classroom. Each chapter is a case study of one of her students and the progress he/she makes throughout English 105, a required course. Included are issues relating to learner motivation, composition and grammatical issues, more specifically, how to handle error correction, classroom techniques and syllabus design. The study follows five individual students and their struggle as they begin to understand how to use correct English grammar and form and at the same time retain their own individual approach and cultural diversity that brings such richness to the ESL students' compositions.
