The Olympic Peninsula is home to a unique ecosystem that includes plants and animals that exist only on the Olympic Peninsula (endemic). There are eight endemic plants and 15 endemic animals . These plants and animals do not live outside the Olympic Peninsula because the peninsula has been isolated from the rest of the United States for thousands of years. Two thousand years ago, a vast continental sheet of glacial ice ran south from the Arctic covering western Canada. When it reached the Olympic Mountains, the sheet was split into two lobes, the Juan de Fuca and Puget ice lobes. During this time, a glacial outwash stream wrapped around the south side of the peninsula and extended to the Pacific Ocean. This cut the peninsula off from the nearby Cascade Mountains, as well as the rest of the continent. The end result is that not many animals were able to enter or exit the area.

Checklist of Moths seen / trapped on Reed's Moss
Here is a list of the moths so far recorded on Reed's Moss, in about 8 moth trapping sessions. We began moth trapping on the moss in 2002 and in 2003 undertook a survey which involved monthly visits from March to September. Also in March 2003, the daytime flying moth, Orange Underwing was recorded on the moss for the first time. Summer Wildlife
Spring and summer means the return to the high country of the animals and birds that migrated away in the fall, the waking up of the hibernating animals, and the blooming of wildflowers as the snow melts away.
Copper is located in the southern Rockies of the United States and the central Rockies of Colorado. Copper's base elevation is 9708' and the highest skiing access is 12,131'. Elevation and latitude determine the climate, which in turn determines the weather, the trees and plants which in turn determine the wildlife.
This brief guide is designed to assist in identifying some of the more common birds, animals, trees and other natural features of Copper in the summer.
BIRDS
More than 100 birds have been identified at Copper Mountain. A checklist may available.
ROBIN
Usually the first to be seen in spring. They live at all elevations, from the valley floor to the subalpine forest at timberline.

BIRDS
Five birds frequent Copper in the winter. Two are commonly seen, the camprobber jay and the raven.
RAVEN
Solid black, larger than a crow. It likes to ride the air currents up high. Usually seen in pairs-they mate for life. Chortles, cackles and caws are among the many sounds this intelligent bird can make. Likes to perch on the treetops. Look there first if you hear one. It's also a scavenger.
CAMPROBBER JAY
Light gray, size of a robin. Commonly seen at outdoor eating areas- will take food out of people’s hands. The Flyers snack bar and the deck at Solitude are good places to see one. Stores food in tree branches to eat later. It retains heat by puffing its feather to trap insulating air.

01 THE SHETLAND PONY
Here we have a picture of a Shetland pony mare and her foal. In days gone by these tiny horses did nearly all the agricultural work of the crofts - but today they are largely replaced by - and the Shetland pony is quite scarce on its native islands However - there are many to be found in the south - where it is highly esteemed as a children's riding pony. Lucky indeed is the small child who has one of these delightful and docile ponies as his first mount. 02 THE WELSH MOUNTAIN PONY
The Welsh mountain pony is a delightful little animal and makes a very good child's mount. It was formerly much used in the pits - but mechanisation has largely done away with the need for ponies in the mines. Welsh ponies vary in colour bays - greys - chestnuts and blacks are all to be met with - and a pretty sight they are when seen on a green hillside or wandering over a gorsy common - the little mares followed by their foals - with a proud stallion leading the party. 03 WILD WHITE OR PARK CATTLE
Wild white or park cattle are kept in several places in Great Britain. They are fine white cattle with black or red points and date back to the Middle Ages - when the great noblemen enclosed areas of land for sporting purposes. In these parks were deer - wild boars and wild bulls. Whether the cattle were really wild or gone wild is not certain They may have been the latter. Anyhow' the breed still survives - for example the Chillingham herd in the great park at Chillingham in Northumberland - and the Chartlev Cattle at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire.

In summer, stoats, (also known as ermine), are chestnut brown with a creamy underbelly and black tipped tail. In November, as the temperature drops, they develop their winter coats and become pure white apart from the tip to their tails, which remains black. This makes them an extremely attractive sight.
