Matara ( , more correctly transliterated Metera - see below for further explanation ) is a major city site both of the Aksumite and pre-Aksumite periods and one of Eritrea's prime cultural and historic treasures, situated a few kilometers south of Senafe in the southern Eritrean province, Akkele Guzai. The site, known to residents of the region as Belew Kelew or Belo Kelo, is not far from the border which existed between Eritrea and Tigray, northernmost province of Ethiopia, before the recent warfare (see maps ). After Ethiopian troops captured the border town, Zala Ambesa, they advanced on the plain through Senafe and to Adi Keyih. Repeated pitched battles were fought across the plains around Senafe between Ethiopian and Eritrean forces, subjecting the Matara ruins to severe hazard. Thereafter, the Ethiopian forces held the region surrounding the site until the long-awaited separation of forces and establishment of the United Nations-mandated Temporary Security Zone and subsequent ruling of the Border Commission.

Eritrea accepts OAU plan to end war with Ethiopia
July 15, 1999

Web posted at: 12:12 a.m. EDT (0412 GMT)
From staff and wire reports UNITED NATIONS Eritrea has accepted proposals from the Organization of African Unity to end its war with Ethiopia , according to documents received by CNN from Eritrean representatives. Writing to the president of Algeria, Abdulaziz Bouteflika, Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki said in a letter dated July 14 that Eritrea accepts the OAU's 'framework agreement,' which calls for a cease-fire and withdrawal of troops from areas of dispute. There was no word yet from Ethiopia, which diplomats said was still studying the proposals presented during an OAU summit in Algiers. "We have accepted the framework proposal as a whole and clarified a few items we thought were ambiguous," Tesfa Alem Seyoum, a diplomat at Eritrea's U.N. mission said.

Analysis: How allies became enemies

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian PM Meles Zenawi
By East Africa Correspondent Cathy Jenkins It was the introduction of a new currency by Eritrea in 1997 that gave the first indications that all was not as it seemed between the two Horn of Africa neighbours. Until then relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea had appeared to be excellent. For the West, Ethiopia's prime minister, Meles Zenawi, and the Eritrean president, Isaias Afwerki, were a new type of African leader who, it was hoped, would help bring about an African renaissance. At home they were often described as being like brothers. The Eritreans helped the Ethiopians overthrow the Mengistu regime, and, in 1993, gained their own long-fought for independence. Until 1997 Eritrea had kept the Ethiopian currency. When it introduced its own, citing economic reasons, the relationship started to look shaky. The long border shared by the two countries is in places mountainous, rocky and desolate. It has never been properly delineated.

Ethiopia, Eritrea open new border war front
February 8, 1999
Web posted at: 10:31 a.m. EST (1531 GMT) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Reuters) Ethiopia army units backed by fighter planes attacked Eritrean troops on a second front on Monday in an escalation of the border conflict between the two Horn of Africa states. Each side accused the other of firing first near Tsorona, a small Eritrean town which lies on a heavily-militarised plain between two mountain ranges and controls access to the strategic Eritrean town of Dekamhare, close to the capital Asmara. Ethiopia said it had deployed fighter aircraft to attack Eritrean positions outside Tsorona and on the Badme front further west, the first time either side has admitted using air power in three days of fierce fighting between the former allies. Government spokeswoman Selome Taddesse said its offensive on both fronts was in response to Eritrean attacks.

Flag adopted
5 December 1995, coat of arms adopted 24 May 1993.
National Flag
Description: Green over light blue with red traingle at hoist reaching the fly, and with yellow wreath in it.
The construction sheet in Album 2000 (that is wrong apparently, to be corrected in "Correction 1" evenutally) positions the midpoint of the wreath 1/2 hoist from hoist, that same size being the height of the wreath, too.
Now, a biger problem is overall ratio. Prevously on FOTW, and on Graham's World Flag Database site and in Album 1995 the ratio is given as 2:3, while in Album 2000 (and Corr 24. of Album 1996 and latter) as well as on the Shipmate chart 2000 it is 1:2. Presumaby the latter data would be more correct.
Pantone approximation given in Album 2000 are: green red yellow blue Even if there seems to be no direct connection with green and blue flag in neighbouring countries and regions, certainly the light blue - green combination is popular in the area.

Deceit Is Its Own amnation (Part II) By 'Warsay ' November 19, 1999 In its latest issue of November 12, 1999, Africa Confidential waited five months to report on battles that it purports to have occurred the third week of June. Its editors were probably fine-tuning the methodology of how to present their "confidential" findings. I will next present my observations on the style and substance of what they have come up with.

ASMARA, Eritrea (Reuters) African nation Eritrea says 52,000 Australian sheep that spent months at sea after being rejected by dozens of countries would be slaughtered over the next two months and eaten. Over 5,000 sheep died during their time on board what some Australian media dubbed the "ship of death" as more than 20 states turned them away on health grounds. The animals have been herded ashore in Eritrea after the impoverished African country agreed to take them as a gift. Eritrean Agriculture Minister Arefayne Berhe said Monday there were no health issues associated with the sheep. "Our veterinarians have inspected them and testified they are free from disease," he said. "The fact that they were on board the ship for so long is good for us. "They were de facto in quarantine, and if they have been for so long in quarantine and don't show any symptoms of a disease, it only attests to us that they are free of any disease and fit for human consumption," he added.
