Matara ( , more correctly transliterated Metera - see below for further explanation ) is a major city site both of the Aksumite and pre-Aksumite periods and one of Eritrea's prime cultural and historic treasures, situated a few kilometers south of Senafe in the southern Eritrean province, Akkele Guzai. The site, known to residents of the region as Belew Kelew or Belo Kelo, is not far from the border which existed between Eritrea and Tigray, northernmost province of Ethiopia, before the recent warfare (see maps ). After Ethiopian troops captured the border town, Zala Ambesa, they advanced on the plain through Senafe and to Adi Keyih. Repeated pitched battles were fought across the plains around Senafe between Ethiopian and Eritrean forces, subjecting the Matara ruins to severe hazard. Thereafter, the Ethiopian forces held the region surrounding the site until the long-awaited separation of forces and establishment of the United Nations-mandated Temporary Security Zone and subsequent ruling of the Border Commission.

Help Tuesday, March 2, 1999 Published at 17:24 GMT World: Africa Analysis: How allies became enemies Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian PM Meles Zenawi By East Africa Correspondent Cathy Jenkins It was the introduction of a new currency by Eritrea in 1997 that gave the first indications that all was not as it seemed between the two Horn of Africa neighbours. Until then relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea had appeared to be excellent. For the West, Ethiopia's prime minister, Meles Zenawi, and the Eritrean president, Isaias Afwerki, were a new type of African leader who, it was hoped, would help bring about an African renaissance. At home they were often described as being like brothers. The Eritreans helped the Ethiopians overthrow the Mengistu regime, and, in 1993, gained their own long-fought for independence. Until 1997 Eritrea had kept the Ethiopian currency. When it introduced its own, citing economic reasons, the relationship started to look shaky. The long border shared by the two countries is in places mountainous, rocky and desolate. It has never been properly delineated.

Each side accused the other of firing first near Tsorona, a small Eritrean town which lies on a heavily-militarised plain between two mountain ranges and controls access to the strategic Eritrean town of Dekamhare, close to the capital Asmara. Over 5,000 sheep died during their time on board what some Australian media dubbed the "ship of death" as more than 20 states turned them away on health grounds. The animals have been herded ashore in Eritrea after the impoverished African country agreed to take them as a gift. Eritrean Agriculture Minister Arefayne Berhe said Monday there were no health issues associated with the sheep. "Our veterinarians have inspected them and testified they are free from disease," he said. "The fact that they were on board the ship for so long is good for us. "They were de facto in quarantine, and if they have been for so long in quarantine and don't show any symptoms of a disease, it only attests to us that they are free of any disease and fit for human consumption," he added.
