    Teaching Science and Technology to Children of Developing Nations Introduction Why Eritrea? The Project Project History Curriculum Examples Press Why Eritrea? After thirty years of war, Eritrea, a small country in northeast Africa, desire s sustainable peace for its people. Eritrea’s best resource are its citizens. However, the nation has a high illiteracy rate caused by an interruption of its educational system during the war, preventing the population from moving quickly into a technological society. A top priority of the government of Eritrea is the education of its people. Government policy makers believe by using current technology tools, Eritrean children can quickly scale the ladder of success. Eritrea does not have the resources to do this alone and is seeking assistance. Craig Johnson, chairman of a new formed group called NetAfrica, led a delegation to Eritrea in 1997 to meet with President Isaias Afwerki. From their discussions, came the seeds of a joint educational project. They discussed how the Internet can assist Eritrea as a training tool to provide teachers and its workforce with Internet access to the rest of the world. In 1998, the Math/Science Nucleus became the umbrella organization for NetAfrica with Teclu Tesfazghi, a Board Member, responsible for outlining a project with the government of Eritrea. In 2002, the Eritrea government selected Ali Suleman to become the national coordinator. Oscar Rosenbloom became the Project Coordinator for the Math/Science Nucleus.

    Having won its independence in 1993, Eritrea seems, from a religious perspective, to be more or less equally divided between Christians and Muslims. However, it is noticeable that the radical Islamic groups seem to have a certain following, partly also through the aid from and contacts with Iran, South Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Eritrea has repeatedly accused Sudan of giving support to Islamic terrorists. The relations between the two religions are generally quite good; the government is not partial to either side, partly also because it has to cope with a violent offensive on the part of fundamentalist groups. In a recent interview given to "New People feature services", Father Paolo Paganini, a Capuchin priest who has worked for the apostolic vicariate in Eritrea, has expressed concerns about events in the country. In recent conflicts between government forces and fundamentalists a number of people have been killed, but what is still more serious is that among the rebels taken prisoner two Moroccan nationals and two Turks were found, an evident sign of the involvement of the Muslim countries. On July 7 1997, the Italian newspaper

    The Eritrean people gained control of the country on May 24, 1991, after thirty years of armed struggle for the right to self-determination. The Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) formed the Provisional Government of Eritrea (PGE) to run the country's affairs until an internationally monitored referendum scheduled for April 1993. The Referendum 98.5% of registered voters turned out for the referendum. The result was a resounding vote for independence: 99.8% said 'yes" for independence. Samir Sanbar, head of the United Nations observer mission said the referendum was "free and fair at every stage." Other observer groups confirmed this. The Transition On May 19, 1993, the PGE issued Proclamation No. 37/1993 regarding a reorganization of the government. During a four year transition period, and if possible sooner, the following goals should be achieved: ¥ drafting a constitution and then carrying out the process of ratification;
    ¥ preparing a law on political parties;
    ¥ preparing a press law; and
