Eritrea: Government expects more Deportees, 3/31/99
ERITREA: Government expects more deportees as displaced numbers grow NAIROBI, 31 March (IRIN) - The Eritrean government is planning for the arrival of 50,000 Eritreans from Ethiopia during 1999. They would join over 55,000 who have already arrived since the outbreak of the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea last May, officals say. In the latest explusions, the Eritrean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday announced that 1,501 Eritreans were sent back from Ethiopia over the weekend. The deportations take place despite ongoing clashes on the ground along the common border. Eritrean officials say there are about 75,000 Eritreans still in Ethiopia.. A spokesman for the Eritrean Relief and Refugee Commission (ERREC) told IRIN today that the government's latest appeal for all war-affected populations targets up to 550,000 people in need. Since last year, donor interest "has grown" in supporting humanitarian programmes for the displaced, the ERREC official said, while mentioning that last year's ERREC appeal was about one-third funded. From the UN, UNDP is donating about US $2.2 million to the displaced persons' programme. The human cost of the war in the Horn of Africa is enormous. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea claim to have killed, wounded or captured tens of thousands of troops. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced over the last 10 months because of the conflict. Border villages and towns have been evacuated, where previously co-habiting communities from the respective countries have become divided and homeless. The latest appeals and figures from Ethiopia and Eritrea put the expected caseload of war-displaced civilians in need of humanitarian assistance in 1999 at around 931,000 people. (Ethiopia recently upped its figures to about 381,000 displaced people).

NAIROBI, 18 Sep 2002 (IRIN) - The international human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has called on the Eritrean authorities to immediately release a number of political dissidents and journalists who have been in detention for a year.
"These arbitrary detentions place Eritrea in contravention of international and regional human rights treaties which the government has only recently ratified," it said. "They also foster a climate of impunity on the part of the authorities."
In a 24-page report, entitled 'Eritrea: Arbitrary detentions of government critics and journalists', the organisation on Wednesday described the detainees as "prisoners of conscience".
"Critics of the government and journalists from the private press have been held in secret incommunicado detention for one year now, since the authorities started a sudden clampdown on growing public dissent in September 2001," Amnesty International said.
On 18 September 2001, a group of 11 government dissidents - who had publicly criticised President Isayas Afewerki and questioned the development of democracy in the country - were detained. They included former vice-president Mahmoud Sherifo and former foreign minister Petros Solomon.

NAIROBI, 2 Sep 2002 (IRIN) - After ordering most international demining
groups to leave the country, the Eritrean government has set up its own
demining authority.
According to Eritrean radio, the authority will be tasked with "studying
landmines planted in the country, demining, and turning the mined areas
into productive land". It will also sensitise the public on mine
awareness and coordinate the demining programme in the country.
The radio said that following the end of the Eritrea-Ethiopia border war
in 2000, five international demining groups entered the country - Halo Trust, Danish Church Aid, Danish Demining Group, Mine Awareness Trust and RONCO - to demine the Temporary Security Zone between the two countries and develop Eritrea's demining capacity. ERITREA: Government denies soliciting for Nigerian mediation
NAIROBI, 8 Mar 2004 (IRIN) - The Eritrean government has denied soliciting for Nigerian mediation in its border conflict with neighbouring Ethiopia.
In a statement, the Eritrean embassy in Nigeria said contrary to reports in the Nigerian daily, The Guardian, on 3 March, the Eritrean government had not sought any assistance from that country to intervene in the matter, because it regarded the April 2002 ruling of the boundary commission as "final and binding".
Nigerian Foreign Minister Oluyemi Adeneji was quoted by international media last week as saying that Eritrea had asked his country to intervene in the dispute. "We do not know the source, particularly as it was not signed, or the underlying motivation," the Eritrean statement said of the article entitled "Eritrea seeks Nigeria's help to avert war with Ethiopia".
"The article was a misrepresentation of the facts," it added.
Eritrea, however, confirmed that a meeting took place between its ambassador to Nigeria, Daniel Yohannes, and Adeneji, to whom the former had delivered a "standard" message from President Isayas Afeworki to his Nigerian counterpart "as part of Eritrea's routine diplomatic activities to keep to keep African heads of states informed of the situation of the peace process".
