Ethiopia's annexation of Eritrea as a province 10 years later sparked a 30-year struggle for independence that ended in 1991 with Eritrean rebels defeating governmental forces; independence was overwhelmingly approved in a 1993 referendum. A two-and-a-half-year border war with Ethiopia that erupted in 1998 ended under UN auspices on 12 December 2000. Eritrea currently hosts a UN peacekeeping operation that is monitoring the border region. An international commission, organized to resolve the border dispute, posted its findings in 2002 but final demarcation is on hold due to Ethiopian objections.

    http://www.open.org/~tfl/eritrea/history.html
History of Eritrea Eritrea is one of the newest and most promising nations in Africa and containts remnants of some of its oldest civilizations. One of the earliest known references to Eritrea is from Aeschylus (Fragment 67) in which he refers to the "Mare Erythreum" (Red Sea) as "the lake that is the jewel of Ethiopia." Eritrea recently fought and won one of the longest wars in the world. After thirty years of bitter strugle, Eritrea achieve total independence and the right to self-determination. The Eritrean people acheived their goals in 1991 in a stunning defeat of the occupying Ethiopian forces which also helped liberate Ethiopia from the Soviet-backed Dergue (Menguistu Hailemariam) regime.
    Early History
Between 1000 and 400 BC, a semitic group of people known as the Sabeans crossed the Red Sea into the region known as present Eritrea, and intermingled with the Hamitic inhabitants who had migrated from the northern Sudan. The region was then controlled by various foreign invaders such as the Axumite kingdom, the Funji Sultans of Sudan, the Egyptians, the Portugese and the Turks. Each of these foreign occupiers had a distinct impact on the development of present day Eritrea as a nation and in the formation of an Eritrean identity.

This site is intended as a resource for Eritrean planners, students, researchers, agriculturalists, meteorologists, and investors. It is hoped that with easily accessible, accurate data, Eritreans can plan and implement more effective and beneficial development projects and business investments. Ultimately through more effective and efficient public and private investment both Eritrea's national development and the Eritrean people as a whole will benefit. Accurate Eritrea-specific Models: This data is produced from country-specific research that utilizes publicly accessible satellite data and geographic modeling techniques that optimize resolution and accuracy. The methods employed in this research are cheap and easy from a technical point of view, but they provide increased accuracy for the resulting esitmates. The increased accuracy results from the fact that the correlations and models are calibrated specifically for Eritrea. This allows estimates of the relevant parameters to be much more detailed than data derived from more general regional maps and estimates. Furthermore the data contained at this site is produced by researchers who have lived and worked in Eritrea for several years. This familiarity with Eritrean conditions allows the geographic models to be more efficently customized for the Eritrean case.

    by Robert Van Buskirk, Ph.D.
    Topics:
Motivation Formulation Features Performance ... Conclusions
Meteorological models are used to estimate the effects of complex geography for mapping Eritrean climate and resources. Eritrea has a complex geography that consistes of steep mountain slopes, topographically induced rainfall, and complex land/sea interactions. These effects can result in rapid small-scale variations in climate, vegetation, land use, populations, and socio-economic activity. Through development of a national Eritrean climate model we are mapping the daily and monthly variations in climate to a temporal resolution less than one hour, and a spacial resolution of less than four kilometers. This is achieved through the development of computer models that account for the flows of heat, momentum, air, and water vapor over the South Red Sea and through the Eritrean Highlands.
    Motivation
A national climatological and meteorological model is an essential piece of informational infrastructure for Eritrea's national development. With the increasing power of personal computers it is now possible to run fairly sophisticated weather and climate simulations on computers that cost only a couple of thousand U.S. dollars. At the same time climate data collection is difficult and slow in Eritrea. One climatological data collection station can cost as much as $10,000 and with steep slopes and complex topography it can be difficult to generalize the measurements of one station more than a few kilometers. A climate and meteorological model can perform such geographic data extrapolations with enhanced detail and precision compared to less sophisticated methods.
