The early history of eritrea and northern for balanced historical and cultural studiesfreed the mountainous plateau of northeastern africa, eritrean scholars

New African Magazine, Nov 2001, No 401
http://www.africasia.com/na/nov01/cover2.htm New discoveries in Africa change face of history By Prof. Richard Greenfield (All photos credit to Richard Greenfield) October was "black History Month" in Britain. As part of the celebrations, we asked Prof. Richard Greenfield to look at the significance of recent breakthrough to scholarly research on the early history of northeastern Africa. New discoveries there have provided incontrovertible evidence of settled pastoral and agricultural communities dating way back to 800 BC - earlier by far than hitherto envisaged.
The early history of Eritrea and northern Ethiopia will have to be rewritten in the light of dramatic new discoveries. And they have relevance to the worldwide demand for balanced historical and cultural studies freed from arrogance, prejudice and racism.
Up on the mountainous plateau of northeastern Africa, Eritrean scholars and their international colleagues at the University of Asmara have been conducting new excavations and utilizing the latest carbon-dating techniques to revolutionary effect. This research has already revealed incontrovertible evidence of settled pastoral and agricultural communities dating way back to 800 BC - earlier by far than heretofore envisaged.
Together with revised linguistic evidence, it seriously and probably finally challenges assumptions, dating from the colonial era and earlier, that it must have been immigration of Sabaens crossing the Red Sea into Africa, that introduced Semitic and related languages and gave rise to the emergence of complex societies and cultures such as that of Aksum. In noting this, we must now set this revision in context and also ask why it has not secured earlier.

Recommended Books Inside African Art, in association with Amazon.com, is proud to recommend the following books. All of these books are by Julia Stewart who has lived and worked in Africa for the past 13 years, primarily in Kenya, Eritrea, Rwanda, and is currently working in Angola. Her books are not only informative as they go into great cultural and historical detail, but are interesting and fun to read. In addition, they are scattered with marvelous illustrations by Todd Schaffer, your host! Julie's latest book, Stewart's Quotable Africa, will be out soon. If you are interested in purchasing any of these books, click the link below the book and you will be whisked-away to the appropriate page on Amazon.com. Don't forget to come back! In Africa, culture-specific traditions exist for naming children. Often the time when the child is born - in daylight, on market day, the day of the week - influence the name: Children born on Friday in Swahili cultures may be called Juma, which is derived from the Kiswahili word Ijuma, Friday. From Aba to Zuri, African Names offers more than a thousand names from all corners of the African continent. Names are listed alphabetically and include country of origin as well as their English translations.

Unit Four Regional Perspectives
Module Nineteen: West Africa
Teacher's Edition
PURPOSE
The purpose of Module Nineteen is to introduce students to the region called East Africa. East Africa is a vast area encompassing the countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, and Comoros. As with other regions of Africa (see Introduction to Module Twenty: Regional Perspectives ), the countries that are included in East Africa can vary somewhat depending on whom you talk to. Some of the countries listed here can also fit into the regions of Central, Southern, or Northern Africa. But for the sake of this module, we will refer to East Africa as the twelve countries listed above. Activity One: The Region Called East Africa gives a brief overview of the history of the region, highlighting human origins, early kingdoms, trade routes, European colonialism, and postcolonial states. In this activity, students should get a sense of the rich history of this region and its connectedness to other regions in Africa and the rest of the world. The activity ends by discussing intra-regional political and economic organizations in East Africa, giving COMESA as one example. Activity Two: The Geography of East Africa deals with some of the geographical differences between East African subregions. The region of East Africa can be further broken down into three subregions—The Horn of Africa (Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti), the Great Lakes Region (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi), and islands in the Indian Ocean (Seychelles and Comoros). The different vegetations, water availabilities, topographies, and population densities in these regions are discussed. Also, the impact of tourism on the East African enviroment is discussed.

Dr Bereket's sceptical answer to the former will come as no surprise to those familiar with his views. He is clearly disheartened that the government has yet to implement the Constitution that was ratified in May 1997, a constitution that was the result of three laborious years of consultation by a commission that the government itself had asked Dr Bereket to chair between 1994 and 1997. It is also clear that he is puzzled by the fact that the government would have established an electoral committee which 'disappeared' after only two meetings. What happened between 1997 and 1998? He asked. And what has happened since 2000? The lively discussion ended with a member of the audience asking Dr Bereket if he would today accept to chair the Constitutional Commission, and what if any changes he would make to the current draft. Dr Bereket concluded by saying that, with hindsight, he would most likely turn down any similar request and that while satisfied with the constitution as it stood, he would nonetheless amend the chapter on language. Wiring Africa's Newest Country Email in Eritrea… September 1998 In the beginning… Email in Eritrea? Should be easy, right? Arrival The carcasses of previous attempts ... Internet the Eritrean way: The shape of things to come This is the story of how a friend (Craig Harmer) and I (Robert Van Buskirk) set up the email system in a new African country almost by accident. Technically, it should have been easy; it wasn't. We found that out on the electronic frontier, it isn't the laws of mere mortals that govern but instead, it is Murphy's Maxim that rules supreme. But in spite of both supreme and human law, in the end we managed to put something together that not only works, but works well. And like any piece of real history, the story of how it happened is filled with success, failure, collective culture and individual personality. To my Eritrean Friends and Colleagues: This article is written from the perspective of a foreigner for a general audience. As such it perhaps makes light of many infrastructural problems, regulatory misunderstandings, and organizational problems. I know that there is a lot of historical and social context to these problems which I do not present. But I also think it is healthy to take the problems one encounters with a sense of humor and challenge. I know that at times there can be a fine line between a sense of humor and an attitude of disrespect. I hope that for all concerned, I have stayed on the correct side of that line.

In particular the knowledge and use of computer networks should be a fundamental aspect of their computerized communication system and education program. As federally funded research centers, charged with the promotion of teaching, research, and dissemination of African content to the public, these ASCs have a pre-eminent role in African studies computer resources. Given the above assumption, this paper will focus on African studies computer resources readily available in the U.S. with linkages to Africa. Africanists can utilize four fundamental computer systems:
