Front Page http://sellassie.ourfamily.com Bookmark it! Sellassie Forum Interview with Eritrean President , April 2000 It doesn't look as if the internal conflicts in Ethiopia will have any resolution tomorrow or even in near future. The country entered the era, known in the past as the Era of Princes. Decentralization under different names will continue. The Eritrean Issue is the most obvious example in this process. Africa has to go through a long period of ecomonic development before its people will have people capable of leadership. Right now the people are too poor to think beyond their immidiate needs. Of course, the power in such a situation belongs to those to propogate the ethnic, not mutual causes and this is the basis for further disintegration.

Female Genital Mutilation in Eritrea
Michelle Toering
The international community should intervene to protect the rights of women and to stop
the medical and psychological damage caused by the traditional practice of female genital mutilation.
Sadia and her sister were seven and ten years old respectively. They had
lived in London for the past four years with their mother who had
managed to get them out of Eritrea during the war to avoid danger. They
now are returning to Eritrea under the presumption that it is just for a
visit. They do not know their mother's real intentions. Upon their arrival
she whisks them away to their grandmother's hut and on the next day
their fate becomes apparent. They are handcuffed and tied down. An old woman enters the hut and begins the operation. They are cut open, the clitoris is removed, the lips are sewn together, and their legs are then bound for 40 days to ensure that their wounds heal properly. They have been traumatized, violated and scarred for life. They can no longer bear to look at their mother. She has betrayed their trust.

issue 238 - December 1992 Native stranger
Women fought side by side with men to liberate Eritrea. Now they are in a new struggle to make sure women’s rights remain a vital part of the Eritrean revolution. Elsa Gebreyesus went to do her part. The high-pitched ululation splits the quiet morning air at Asmara airport. As we cross the tarmac, the woman in front of me pauses to express her joy at returning home to Eritrea after who knows how many years of exile. For me, an Eritrean by heritage, it is the first time on my native soil. Tears trickle down my face and I join her ululations. I was not born in Eritrea, but instead grew up moving from country to country, eventually settling in Canada. But my primary identity was always Eritrean, even if I only saw my homeland in pictures or on maps. Most of the people I know back in North America have no idea what it feels like to learn another culture, language and way of life while trying to keep one’s own precious culture and customs alive. But now I have come to see with my own eyes the birth pangs of my people as together we take the first steps towards becoming an independent nation. Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is our largest city with some 350,000 people, but it has more the feel of a big neighbourhood. Those who live there behave like members of an extended family giving life a lightness and a warm sense of security. For me this contrasts sharply with the West where there is little empathy and strangers are ghosts or apparitions that happen to occupy the same time and space.

Getting in and out was a bad experience. The Murtala Muhammad Airport's customs people asked for bribes, and some in an aggressive way. The amount requested seemed to increase by the number of stars on the uniform. I paid some of them off to avoid more hassle.
Then they discovered my laptop computer! Five of them jumped on me. " You must pay US$200.00! You can reclaim the money when you leave. " A lie. We later discovered that they had given me a receipt for VAT on the amount. Worthless. . . . Beware!
I had checked up on the country before leaving, so I knew that there were problems ahead. Still, my negotiating position was weak.

Entering the second half of the first millennium A.D., Aksum remaines a powerful Christian kingdom in northern Africa. When the kings convertes to Christianity in the fourth century, Aksum becomes linked to Byzantine Egypt. Trade extends to Alexandria to the north and beyond the Nile River to the south. By the close of the sixth century, Persian invaders have undermined Aksumite ascendancy; however, Christianity remains entrenched throughout the region. The shifting control of trade has a profound influence further south as well. Arab traders along the eastern coast of Africa learn local African languages and introduce Islam ; the synthesis of African and Arab cultural elements produce the dynamic Swahili culture ( Swahili comes from the Arabic sahel , meaning coast). History
Along with Djibouti, Somalia, Yemen and Kenya, Eritrea has laid claim to being the site of the fabled 'Land of Punt', a rich, commodity-laden Horn of Africa region which the Egyptian Pharaohs were known to rave about in the vicinity of 2900 BC. Also known as the 'Land of the Gods', it was an area that traded heavily in such sought-after items as gold, frankincense and - unfortunately for the local flora, fauna and people - ebony, ivory and slaves. The very first human settlement in what is now Eritrea, however, is thought to have plunked itself in the Barka Valley in 8000 BC. Its residents are believed to have been related to central African pygmies and, after several thousand years of hefty cultural intermingling, had established strong trade relations with neighbouring ethnic groups. The powerful kingdom of Aksum, sited in what is now the north of Ethiopia, began to make its presence felt in the first century AD, relying heavily on the ancient port of Adulis in Eritrea to handle its sea-going goods. Not content with merely being the facilitators of Aksum's foreign trade, the Eritreans marketed their own stuff overseas, including loads of the black volcanic rock obsidian (prized in the making of jewellery) and tortoiseshells fresh from the Red Sea. The unconventional arrival of Christianity in the land, via shipwrecked Christian Syrian merchants, saw it quickly becoming the religion of choice; it subsequently exerted a profound influence on the development of Eritrean culture.

Africa's Secret Modernist City
Built almost entirely by Italians in the 1930s, the city has one of highest concentrations of Modernist architecture anywhere in the world. It has even been described as "the Miami of Africa." Desperate to build quickly, the colonial government of that time allowed radical architectural experimentation that would not have found favor in the more conservative European environment.

- According to conventional wisdom, the African continent emerged through a split-up of the southern mega-continent Gondwanaland 120 million years ago. New discoveries of dinosaur fossil sculls in the deserts of Niger however strongly suggest that the southern continents drifted apart at least 25 million years later. Africa, as such, thus may be 95 million years old.
