Africa in Denmark
Denmark has a small, but active African community. There is a lot of "Africa" going on in Denmark ...if you are open to it! Exchanging ideas, getting inspiration and learning new tricks should be part of any multi-cultural exchange.
African culture in Denmark
-an introduction
The multi-cultural society is already a fact. People from all over the world move around, mixing cultures and ideas. It has always been like that, but it is getting a little more visible now. Cultural meetings are sometimes a difficult challenge, but everybody can learn from the process. A multi-ethnic society can bring cultural richness and peace. It is not a threat or something to fear or prevent. It is happening! The African society in Denmark is a community of parties, football in the park, music, shops, magazines, cultural weeks, celebrations, national days, picnics and awards. Everybody receives a warm welcome at these events.

African imperialism: Ethiopia and Eritrea From: The Atlas of African Affairs
Ieuan Ll. Griffits Ethiopia came to be regarded by the European powers towards the end of the last century as their equal in imperialism. Ethiopian imperialism has outlasted direct European imperialism in Africa and, despite dramatic changes in domestic political ideology, Ethiopia is still a loosely knit empire which has not yet succumbed to the forces of disintegration that have devasted much grander empires elsewhere. The main victim of Ethiopian imperialism is Eritrea but other parts of the country, including Tigray in the north and the Ogaden in the east, have recently fought militarily for greater autonomy if not downright secession. For thirty years Eritrea fought for its independence from Ethiopia. Eritreans view the long-lasting conflict as a fight for the basic human right of self-determination, denied to them in the past by the UN. Eritrea was seen as a separate political entity which was forced into federation and then union with Ethiopia. Ethiopia has regarded the conflict as a secessionist war waged by a rebellious region which, if successful, would have left Ethiopia landlocked and in danger of further disintegration. The two positions were irreconcilable but, on the fall of the Mengistu regime in Addis Ababa in 1991, Ethiopia ended the war against Eritrea.

Monday, 30 October, 2000, 18:16 GMT Eritrea confronts the future
Time to reflect in a war-scarred country
By Alex Last in Asmara Over the last few months Eritrea has been experiencing an unprecedented level of debate, introspection, and self-criticism. Ever since the last round of fighting, which saw large swathes of the country occupied by Ethiopia, discussion has been pouring through the media on what happened in the war, the state of the country and its future.
Questions are being asked over the government's conduct of the war
Debate via e-mail from the Eritrean diaspora has been one source of articles highly critical of President Isaias Afwerki, the practices of the government, the bureaucracy and the affairs of the ruling party, the Peoples Front for Democracy and Justice (FPDJ). The most common call is for transparency, accountability and for more popular participation in government. The most famous criticism appeared in an open letter to the Eritrean President called the "Berlin Declaration", signed by 13 Eritrean academics and professionals, including the former head of the Constitution Commission, Dr Bereket Habte Selassie and some senior veterans of the war of independence.

An Oregon Volunteer Lands in East Africa
    by Mikey McKillip
I guess I wanted some adventure in my life. I wanted to see and experience some faraway place I'd glimpsed or read about in National Geographic. I wanted to learn new languages, experience different cultures and eat exotic foods. I needed a challenge. Teaching ESL as a member of the Peace Corps seemed the best way for me to reach those goals. At the time I applied for the Peace Corps, I was taking classes and working at Portland State University in Oregon. While waiting for my application to be processed, (it took about a year) I worked as a volunteer instructor for the community ESL program offered by Portland Community College. Russian Oregon Social Services (ROSS) provided me another opportunity to design my own curriculum and teach ESL. In June of 1997, after months of hard work and research, I made the final decision to be placed as an ESL teacher in Eritrea, East Africa. Eritrea is a very small country, about the same size as Pennsylvania, with a population of about 4 million people representing 9 ethnic groups. The main language is Tigrinya. Bordering the Red Sea between Sudan and Djibouti, Eritrea was colonized in 1952 by Ethiopia. In 1961, with the formation of the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF), Eritrea began its struggle for independence. On May 24, l991 (Liberation Day) the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) marched into the capital of Asmara. And in May of 1993 the citizens of Eritrea voted overwhelmingly for independence from Ethiopia.
