http://homepages.gac.edu/~cellab/preface.html
Purpose
  • To provide an on-line data source for standard cell biology laboratories or for inquiry-based education;
  • To create fast and easy access to many other computer-related resources in cell biology on the Internet;
  • To globalize the cell biology laboratory instruction over the information network;
  • To individualize the cell biology laboratory instruction for different institutions;
  • To lower the cost of education for future scientists.
    Here is the information for the Cell Biology Laboratory Manual.
Author's Comments
A cell biology laboratory is composed of an assortment of techniques and procedures collected over a period of time by the author. To some extent the collection represents the bias of the author for selection of topics and specific exercises. The present collection is no exception. Friends who knew of the existence of the collection thought there was a need for its publication. The original collection encompassed about 100 pages of hand-outs and yielded an excess of 350 pages. However, there are no exercises that some undergraduate institution is not currently performing. The decision to place an exercise at a given level is solely that of the author; not everyone would divide the exercises in the same manner. Therefore, the indication of the level is a guide, not an absolute.

STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY
I. Background and Rationale The Structural Biology Initiative involves faculty in the Schools of Medicine, Biological Sciences, and the Departments of Chemistry and Physics who are committed to developing a center of excellence in a discipline poised to make enormous contributions to biomedical research in the next decade. While the University's existing strength is this area is modest, development of the Program will be enhanced by its reputation in NMR research, by the computer graphics expertise in Engineering, and by complementary research groups at Brookhaven and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. B. Program in Structural Biology A robust research effort in structural biology requires expertise and equipment for four key approaches: X-ray crystallography, molecular modeling, NMR spectrometry, and electron microscopy. The Program in Structural Biology proposes to establish units in each of these areas, supported by a core computational facility, to be located on 1.5 floors of the Center for Molecular Medicine. X-ray crystallography has experienced major growth in recent years, as gene cloning and expression technology produces abundant quantities of nucleic acids and proteins for analysis. At present, the University has only a modest program in crystallography, with out-of-date facilities. Most investigators requiring crystallographic analysis collaborate with the excellent group at Brookhaven, where a synchrotron light source and area detector are available for use by university researchers. A crystallography program at Stony Brook could complement the facilities and expertise at Brookhaven and Cold Spring Harbor, making the region a powerhouse of research in this area. The proposed facility will provide office laboratory and shared instrumentation space for 2-3 crystallographers, who would be recruited over several years; the cost for equipment and laboratory set up will be $1,500,000.

From DNA fingerprinting to cloning to bio-remediation to gene therapy and beyond, as we enter the new millennium, there is no aspect of our lives untouched by emerging DNA technologies and associated computer technologies. Its influence is found all around us in the daily news and popular media. Because Montgomery County Public Schools is located in the midst of one of the largest centers of biotechnology related industry in the world, it is imperative that we train our teachers and prepare our students to enter a workforce influenced by biotechnology and assume their responsibilities as scientifically literate citizens. All students should receive instruction in the essential concepts and techniques of molecular biology and learn about access to training leading to careers in biotechnology.
The DNA Resource Center at Thomas S. Wootton High School is the site for a network of teachers, trainers, researchers and community leaders committed to developing, field testing, evaluating and replicating model programs and supporting teachers so they may implement programs giving all students hands-on experience with labs and access to information about opportunities in biotechnology. The goals of the program are to:
  • develop, field-test and evaluate programs for MCPS students and teachers incorporating DNA content and lab technology. The site allows access to "test" classes to try new programs and activities so they may be replicated in science classes throughout the county.

    • For readers, I hope that the concise summaries will help you stay abreast of advances over a broad range, making AJRCCM the journal you quote on rounds. For authors, I hope that the series will make it easier for you to emphasize the novelty of your work as compared with other recently published research. For reviewers, I hope the series will help you when judging the novelty of a manuscript submitted to AJRCCM.
    The hypertext link in each summary enables a reader to return to the original article within seconds. And the links and the taxonomy allow you to organize your reading material into a virtual filing cabinet. Developing Interactive Multimedia for Biology and Chemistry Curricula PIs: Barbara A. Sawrey and Gabriele Wienhausen Understanding modern science mandates an understanding of phenomena invisible to the naked eye and the ability to develop cross-disciplinary knowledge. Most students do not have the expertise to move comfortably from the concrete macroscopic world to the abstraction of the molecular realm and to cross-apply information in the natural sciences. Laboratories are particularly challenging teaching and learning environments especially at large public research universities where hundreds of students may take a given lab course. In this context, the individual needs and learning styles of students are often overlooked. The pressure to help students learn facts, laboratory techniques, and course-specific concepts quickly can cause the big picture or meta-knowledge to be pushed aside or inadvertently left for a later time. Consequently, many students do not build the mental scaffolding to enable assimilating new information in a useful way. A perfusionist is a highly skilled technologist who operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during surgical and medical procedures. This equipment supports or replaces the patient's circulation and lung functions during surgery. The perfusionist must consult with a physician to select appropriate equipment and techniques. The perfusionist monitors vital cardio-pulmonary parameters to ensure the safe management of physiologic functioning during open heart surgery. Furthermore, the perfusionist is educated in the administration of prescribed blood products, anesthetic agents and cardiovascular drugs via the extracorporeal circuit. The perfusionist is knowledgeable and competent in the use of a variety of techniques, including hypothermia, hemodilution, and procedures involving specialized instrumentation and advanced life support. The perfusionist may also be responsible for administrative duties, purchasing, supply and equipment control, inventory, quality assurance and personnel management. Based on institutional factors and available facilities, the perfusionist may also be engaged in research of new products, development of surgical techniques, and data analysis. At all times, the perfusionist must maintain the highest ethical and professional health care standards.

These programs include workshops ofr High School teachers in Developmental Biology DNA techniques , and Environmental Sciences , Research Camps for High School and Middle School students, and on-site visits to Elementary Schools, and are funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program . For upcoming Outreach events, consult the Outreach Calendar Biology is a rapidly changing field and scientists make discoveries daily that alter our understanding of biological principles and shape the direction of our future investigations. We have designed the High School Teachers' Workshops for the purpose of instructing high school teachers in current techniques, and to facilitate the introduction of contemporary topics and technological advances to their students. The teachers selected for this program will receive either a stipend of $400.00, or one graduate credit. Following the workshop, teachers have access to science kits which contain all of the reagents and equipment necessary to incorporate the new topics and concepts into their curriculum at no cost to the teacher or to the school district.
