University of Arizona scientists are hoping to do "extraordinary things" through a new institute that will coordinate UA research in the growing field of biotechnology.
The school's fledgling Institute for Biomedical Science and Biotechnology this year hired its first faculty member, and plans are under way for a multimillion-dollar building that will house an estimated 500 researchers.
The goal is to bring together biology researchers now working in various locations on the main campus with biomedical researchers now at the school's health sciences complex.
Research at the institute also is expected to create two to three new local companies each year that will become part of Tucson's biotechnology industry.
UA's plans are "a recognition of the fact that the science of biology has matured," said institute director Thomas Baldwin. "We're asking (questions) that are so complicated that it requires a team approach to solve the problems."

Email: savidge@helix.mgh.harvard.edu The Morphology/Tissue Culture/Immunology/Flow Cytometry Core has been renamed the Morphology, Cell Biology and Immunology Core to reflect the consolidation of the various advanced technical approaches offered by this Core for nutritional research. The Cell Biology section of this Core provides individual investigators with the necessary technical support, expertise, and resources for the growth of numerous intestinal-derived and other cell lines used in nutritional studies. The core also provides technical support, expertise, and equipment for performing morphological and cell biological studies relevant to the study of cellular architecture and function, epithelial cell biology, assessment of inflammatory processes, and molecular biology at a morphological level. Access to expertise in morphological approaches, training in advanced morphological techniques, and selected services relating to the morphological evaluation are critical to the work being performed by investigators involved in this Center. The Immunology section of the core provides HCNRC investigators with the technical support and expertise for flow cytometric evaluation of cell populations for both phenotypic identification and analysis of intracellular protein expression, as well as the production of monoclonal antibodies.

Professor B.S. Biology, Castleton State College (1973)
Ph.D. Zoology, University of Vermont (1980)
Postodoctoral studies at Dartmouth College (1980-1984). Courses: Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Advanced General Biology, and Scientific Writing How do organelles such as mitochondria and lysosomes move to the locations where they are needed in cells? What regulates this motility? Those are some of the questions my undergraduate students and I investigate in my research laboratory. I am a cell biologist whose major teaching interests are in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry. I teach Cell Biology to Sophomores in the Fall semester and Biochemistry to Juniors and Seniors in the Spring semester. It is our philosophy that the best way for students to learn biology is through hands-on experiences, performing experiments utilizing equipment currently in use in the research and industrial labs of today. We have received several National Science Foundation grants in the last 10 years, allowing us to set up and maintain our teaching labs with the latest modern equipment. For example, in our Cell Biology course we use phase and fluorescence microscopy to study human fibroblasts grown in tissue culture. Fluorescent molecular probes are used to study the various cell compartments. During the course we also use various techniques of centrifugation and electrophoresis to isolate and study various cell components. In Biochemistry the students spend the second half of the semester working in independent research teams to purify a protein. They choose various techniques of electrophoresis and column chromatography to purify the protein. By becoming familiar with the equipment and techniques currently used to gather the information that appears in the textbooks, our students find it much easier to appreciate and understand the concepts that are presented.

Ph.D. Microbiology, University of Virginia (1983)
Postdoctoral Positions at Tufts University Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (1983-1986). Courses: Immunology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, General Biology Laboratory and Scientific Writing My current research focuses on rare and unusual genes of bacteria and bacterial viruses characterized by introns - interruptions in the information-containing sequences of genes. Although virtually all genes of eukaryotic organisms such as humans contain multiple introns, only six intron-containing genes have been discovered among all bacteria and bacterial viruses to date. These introns are remarkable in that they can catalyze their own removal from pre-mRNAs. In addition, many of these introns contain embedded genes which encode proteins required for the insertion of the intron into an intronless version of its gene - a process termed "intron homing." I have discovered and characterized a new catalytic intron in a gene of the soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis . My research students and I are now characterizing the chromosomal location of this gene in an attempt to explain its origin within the bacterial genome. This research is supported by a Career Advancement Award from the National Science Foundation. This page is maintained by James Angstadt (Angstadt@Siena.edu)
