Equestrian First Olympic Appearance: 1900 by John Gettings Along with sailing, equestrian is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete against each other. Inspired by the chariot races of the ancient Greek games, it is also the only Olympic sport in which humans and animals are teammates.
    Did You Know?
Just like people, horses need a valid passport to travel internationally.
In dressage (derived from the French verb "to train") a horse-and-rider team receives scores based on a series of set movements. The movements test the horse's strength, suppleness, and obedience and the rider's ability to guide the horse through the test with subtle cues. The horse-and-rider team should present harmony, lightness, and free-flowing movement. The competition is held in three rounds. The third round is a freestyle test set to music, first introduced in , that is scored both for technique and artistry.

A Modern Perspective of the Ancient Olympic Events
by Richard Bell Today's Modern (Summer) Olympic Games have 32 different categories of competitive events. When you consider that of these many, like track and field, have several events within the category and then break down further to men's and women's and team and individual competition, it is nearly impossible to keep track of the Games as they progress. Things were simpler in the "old days." The Ancient Olympics had 13 events divided into 6 main categories. Of course they were for men only. The main categories were Boxing, Equestrian events, Pankration, Pentathlon, Running and Jumping. The Equestrian events were broken down into two sub-categories: chariot racing and riding. The Pentathlon was a combination of five events: discus, javelin, jump, running, and wrestling. Boxing in ancient Greece had fewer rules than boxing today. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. There was no rule that prevented a boxer from hitting an opponent when he was down. There was no weight class in either the men's or boy's divisions and the contestants were chosen randomly. The boxers did not wear gloves but wrapped their hands and wrists with leather straps called himantes.

Part 1 The dressage competition is a test of the ability of rider and horse and rider to precisely execute various gaits and movements. There is no jumping in dressage. The second of the three Olympic competitions, jumping, is perhaps the best known in the US and was practiced widely in the US prior to the Olympic games. In the Olympic jumping competition, also know as the Prix de Nations (Prize of the Nations), the rider follows a prescribed course within an enclosed stadium, jumping artificial obstacles.
Captain Guy V. Henry on Chiswell (Gruenther) Because of his European experience, Captain Henry knew that his Army issued mounts would not be able to challenge the precisely bred European horses. He determined that the key to winning was superb conditioning of the horses, and even more important, accurate riding of the three day event. The team trained rigorously through the late winter and into the early summer of 1912, despite being handicapped by their late start, the severe winter conditions at Fort Riley, a time limitation of one and a half hours a day of riding hall use, and by the fact that three of its members, Captain Henry included, were required to continue their usual military duties as they prepared.
The 1912 Military Bronze Medal Team
Benjamin Lear on Poppy , John Montgomery on Deceive , and Guy Henry on Chiswell
In 1924 at the Paris Olympics the US team followed much the same pattern as in Antwerp. Major Sloan Doak riding Pathfinder picked up an individual bronze medal in eventing, but the team, which was positioned for a silver, was eliminated due to a miscue on the course. The 1928 games in Amsterdam were again a story of close but unhappy out-comes for the Americans. The eventing team once again positioned for silver but was eliminated because of a course error. Thus, for three efforts in he 1920s the US was able to produce only a single bronze individual medal.

The 1968 Canadian Equestrian Team: At the drop of a hat The 1968 Canadian Equestrian Team: Jim Elder, Tom Gayford and Jim Day All the great athletes have it—the ability to take their game to the next level. Usually it's hard to tell when it happens. In the case of show jumper Jim Elder it was obvious. When Elder's hat came off you knew he was on his game. In 1968, on a hot Mexican afternoon, Elder lost his hat and helped Canada's equestrian team win an Olympic gold. Elder grew up around horses on his family's farm north of Toronto. At that time show-jumping had little profile in Canada. It was primarily a pastime for the well-to-do, and international competitions were limited to riders in the military. "It wasn't a very sophisticated sport. It was just a weekend sport. You didn't really have proper training, you just got on and rode," says Elder. In the 1950s, show-jumping competitions were opened up to civilians. When one of Team Canada's riders got sick, a Young Elder joined Canada's Equestrian Team. "One of the riders took sick and couldn't go on the team. Since they had some small horses left and I was a small guy, I got to go," he explains.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Equestrian A guide to the Olympic sport of Equestrian events Competition details There are three Olympic Equestrian events: eventing, dressage and show jumping. At Olympic Games, the horses must be the same nationality as the riders and each horse must be at least seven years old and have (as well as the rider) a certificate indicating experience in top international competition. Three-day event eventing consists of three elements: dressage, endurance and show jumping. The endurance section has four phases: 5km of road and track, 2.76km steeplechase, 7.7km of road and track, 6.27km cross-country section. After the road and track section there is a compulsory 10-minute veterinary inspection before competitors continue with the cross-country. Each section takes place on a different day, with two days for the dressage. Final results are determined by adding the penalty points together, with the lowest penalty points scored over the three disciplines deciding the winner. For the team event, the winner is determined by adding together the penalty points of the top three riders in each team and the team with the least penalties wins.

"Show jumping" is the most well-known equestrian event. Each horse and rider jumps two rounds of a series of obstacles. Fault points are assessed if an obstacle is knocked down, if the horse balks at an obstacle, or if the time is exceeded. The "dressage" competition requires the rider, man or woman, to guide the horse through a series of precise and intricate movements. Some of these movements include a stunning element called "the passage," which calls for a suspension of motion between each step of a trot, and another, "the piaffe," in which the animal trots in place. Points are awarded for the proper execution of each movement.

Each discipline - horse trials (or eventing), show jumping and dressage - independently administers its own affairs, with representatives from each on the NZEF Council, and on the Federation Committee. The New Zealand Horse Society was founded in 1950, to administer what was then the new Federation Equestrian Internationale show jumping sport - hitherto in this country, jumping had been of the "round the ring " variety, and most of its adherents hunted in winter. Dressage and horse trials were unknown as such. Overseas in Europe, the heart of all three disciplines, the majority of the competitors were cavalry officers although there had been some prominent civilian show jumping riders in Britain in the 20's, 30's and 40'5 up until the second world war. By the late 1940's, and particularly after the Olympic Games in London, show jumping started to attract civilians, and the Duke of Beaufort made Badminton available for the British eventors to " and better their dismal 1948 Olympic performance. Binomial name
Equus caballus The Horse Equus caballus , is a large ungulate mammal, one of the seven modern species of the genus Equus . It has been important for transportation: to ride on, or for pulling a chariot, carriage, horse-drawn boat, stagecoach, tram, etc.; also as plough horse, etc. as well as food; see also Domestication of the horse. It was formerly used in warfare. Click the link for more information. . This broad description includes both riding horses for practical purposes such as in police work or for controlling herd animals on a ranch Ranching is the raising of cattle or sheep on rangeland, although one might also speak of ranching with regard to less common livestock such as elk, bison or emu. It is a usage of the Western United States, Canada and Latin America. Historically, there was a period on the Frontier after the removal of the buffalo and the Native Americans and before the coming of the homesteaders when ranching was the dominant activity. The public lands on the Great Plains were open range and anyone could turn cattle loose on them. Barbed wire, invented in 1869, was gradually employed to fence off privately-owned land especially by homesteaders and ranching became limited to lands of little use for farming.
