The Olympic village was set in exquisite surroundings near Hollywood, and the Games were attended by many of the era's big movie stars.
Los Angeles - the American way
The financial crisis which prompted the stock exchange crash of 1929 did not truly affect the success of the 1932 Games, held in Los Angeles between July 30 and August 14. This 10th Olympiad was held a couple of paces from Hollywood, with Charlie Chaplin, Gary Cooper, and Douglas Fairbanks taking their seats among the spectators. In "their" 105,000-seater Coliseum stadium the American athletes, including Mildred "Babe" Didriksen, winner of the 80m hurdles, javelin and runner-up in the high jump, had plenty to cheer about. But in swimming it was the Japanese who dominated, winning five out of six titles. In total the United States annexed 103 medals, with 41 golds, ahead of Italy (36, 12 gold), France (19, 10 gold) and Sweden (23, 9 gold).

By the time of the Tokyo Games, her third, she was classed a veteran, having already won seven Olympic medals. She would later become known for altogether more controversial reasons.
The Games herald a new dawn in the east
Between October 10 - 24, 5140 athletes from 93 countries became guests of the land of the rising sun. Japan, for its part was eager to prove, as the first Asian host, that it was far removed from the atrocities of the Second World War. The organizers chose a potent symbol to prove their turnaround. Yoshinori Sakai, born on the day an atomic bomb was unleashed on Hiroshima, was chosen as the final runner to carry the Olympic flame into the arena. Although chosen in 1936 for the 1940 Games, Tokyo had to forfeit the following year due to its conflict with China. On May 25, 1959 Japan was given full support to host the 18th Olympiad with 34 votes out of 56 in favor.

David O'Connor Is Named Equestrian Of The Year The Olympic eventer is the first in the sport to take the title twice After a remarkable year, David O'Connor, 41, of The Plains, VA, has been named as USA Equestrian's 2002 Equestrian of the Year. O'Connor is the first two-time winner of this award in the history of the sport. A stellar horseman, O'Connor was chosen from a group of eight of the country's most outstanding athletes that were already bestowed the title of Equestrians of Honor. The eventer first won the award in 2000 largely for his individual gold medal winning performance at the Sydney Olympics, where he rode Custom Made, an Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Joe Zada. While at the games, O'Connor turned in the best eventing dressage score in Olympic history when he opened the individual competition with a score of 29.00 penalties. He was the first U.S. athlete to take the gold medal in the sport since 1984. This past year has also brought significant achievements. His Olympic gold medal horse, Custom Made, carried him to victory once again at Fair Hill International. Before the competition, O'Connor announced the event would be the last for the 17 year-old prize-winning gelding. At Radnor Hunt International, he also won the USA National Two-Star Eventing Championship.

FEATURED ARTICLES: Photo Credit: Arnd Bronkhorst Viewpoints on Jumper Course Designing by Hallie McEvoy view: PDF When most jumper riders head off to a horse show, they look at the prize list to see who is managing and judging the show. They also want to know about the quality of the jumps, footing, stabling, and schooling areas. One of the last items most people contemplate is who will be the course designer for their classes.
But the jumper course designer is perhaps the biggest piece in the puzzle that either makes or breaks a show for a competitor. The course designer not only has to please the riders, but also the management and the spectators. Jumper course designers are a rare breed in the world of hunter and jumper shows. Currently, there are only about fifty jumper course designers licensed by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), and only a handful accredited by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), making such experts a scarce commodity for a show manager seeking a designer.
