history. In the 1920 olympic Games in Antwerp, cavalry officers competed in an event inpostwar Germany as a means of introducing children to equestrian sports.
http://www.uset.com/html/vaultingHistory.cfm
VAULTING Vaulting was added to the USET's stable of international competition in late 2001, and is the newest of the USET's disciplines. It is an international discipline in which athletes perform gymnastic and dance movements on the back of their equine partner, who is cantering on the lunge line. Support for athletes representing the United States at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain is the primary focus of the 2002 USET Vaulting Program. HISTORY Vaulting can be traced to ancient times. Because of their use in battle and during the hunt, many cultures developed mounts and dismounts from the moving horse. Stone paintings from the Bronze Age in South Scandinavia, 1500 BC, depict horses with people standing on them. Contests arose as these cultures refined their talents. Vaulting or artistic riding was born and included in the Classical Olympic Games. The name vaulting derives from the French "La Voltige", which was first used in the Renaissance where the sport was part of the education provided to knights and noblemen. In the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, cavalry officers competed in an event called Artistic Riding. Modern vaulting was developed in postwar Germany as a means of introducing children to equestrian sports. In 1950, rules for competition were developed and a national school for training horses, coaches, and riders was established in Hohenhameln, Germany.

The Events
"Show jumping" is the most well-known equestrian event. Each horse and rider jumps two rounds of a series of obstacles. Fault points are assessed if an obstacle is knocked down, if the horse balks at an obstacle, or if the time is exceeded. The "dressage" competition requires the rider, man or woman, to guide the horse through a series of precise and intricate movements. Some of these movements include a stunning element called "the passage," which calls for a suspension of motion between each step of a trot, and another, "the piaffe," in which the animal trots in place. Points are awarded for the proper execution of each movement.

Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history. There are those who have dominated, like the great Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who became the first woman to win four gold medals in a single Games, and Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union, whose nine gold, five silver and four bronze over the course of three Olympiads remains a record for men and women. There are those who are renown for their "firsts" like Nadia Comanici who became the first Olympic gymnast male or female to score a perfect 10 in competition and American Joan Benoit who won the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984. Women athletes in many countries have historically made a disproportionately high contribution to the medals count at the Games. This has certainly been true for Australia. In certain Olympic sports, particularly swimming and track and field, Australian women have been outstanding. For example in track and field up to and including Atlanta, since 1948 women have constituted just over 30% of the track and field team but have won 75% of all medals and 11 out of 14 gold medals.

The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
The Nemean Games
The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

From the start, the Chief Constable obtained approval for a horse to be provided for each superintendent, as well as for a horse to be kept at principal stations. In 1880, the horse was the main means of transport and the then Chief Constable Henry Martin Moorsom often pointed out the need to use horses for police work.

The Australian Womens Hockey Team arrived at the Atlanta1996 Olympics unbeaten in in 31 international matches. They left Atlanta with the gold medal and their unbeaten record intact. Did you know? The Equestrian team at the Atlanta 1996 games will be remembered for their brilliant back-to-backwins and broken bones. Wendy Schaeffer topped the individual classification while still recovering from a broken leg. Matt Ryan was forced to withdraw when his horse chipped a bone on it's heal. Andrew Hoy's groom chipped an elbow in a fall. The most remarkable of all preformances was Gilian Rolton's. On the second day of the three day event she fell twice breaking her collar-bone, craking two ribs and chipping a shoulder bone. Gillian completed the course despite her injuries, helping the team to a gold medal win.

    Press Release:
JOIN THE GROWING RANKS OF LEGEND SUPPORTERS
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kansas, April 2001- David and Karen O'Connor, two of the nation's most celebrated equestrians, have signed an agreement with Bayer Corporation to join the Legend (hyaluronate sodium) Injectable Solution team of spokesmen and women. Beginning this year, they will add their personal endorsement of Legend, the only sodium hyaluronate approved for intravenous administration to treat equine joint disease. "We're extremely delighted to welcome the O'Connors to our team," said Dr. Alfred Amend, Bayer vice president, Marketing and Sales. "One of the primary reasons they agreed to speak for Legend is because they use the product and believe in it. And with their track records, that says a great deal to other equestrians." David O'Connor's track record is the stuff of which legends are made. He not only won the first Olympic Gold Medal for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) since 1984 at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he turned in the best score in Olympic eventing history on Custom Made, a 15-year-old Irish Thoroughbred gelding. David also made history by sharing an Olympic Medal (Team Bronze) with his wife and teammate Karen for the second time. They shared the eventing team Silver at the 1996 Olympic Games.

    http://www.foxfield.com/drillteam/drillteam.html
The first featured equestrian performers in the history of the Olympic Games, the Foxfield Equestrian Team has been thrilling audiences for more than thirty years. Sixteen young riders gallop their horses through an elaborate drill routine that includes jumps, pirouettes, and more all without the aid of saddles, stirrups, bits or bridles. Riding bareback, each team member guides her horse using only her natural aids weight, legs and voice and a delicate band of wire looped around the base of her horse's neck. In addition to a rousing drill team performance, several of the riders offer individual routines in which they demonstrate Olympic-level dressage movements, soar over grand-prix-sized fences, even jump standing up. Team Members
The riders, aged six to eighteen, train their own horses "to the wire." Those horses run the gamut from tiny Sicilian donkeys to Thoroughbreds to Warmbloods to crossbred ponies. Their riders are some of Foxfield's most accomplished, but it takes more than pure ability to win a spot on the team. Riders must demonstrate an affinity for teamwork, an ability to accept criticism, and good academic standing in school. Membership on the team also takes a commitment to hard work; not only must the riders practice, perform, and train their own horses, they must care for them, too, since there are no grooms at Foxfield. As a result, team members develop a great sense of camaraderie, friendship and sportsmanship.
