Olympic Equestrian: The Sports and the Stories from Stockholm to Sydney
Jennifer O. Bryant Few sights are as enthralling as rider and horse, in perfect partnership, riding for the glory of their country. Whether it is the thrill of cross-country, the bravado of show jumping, or the elegance of dressage, the Olympic equestrian disciplines offer horsemanship and athleticism at the highest levels. Olympic Equestrian chronicles the origins of the three-day event, show jumping, and dressage and their segue into the mainstream Olympic games. Author Jennifer O. Bryant relates the important developments that have shaped the horse world and equestrian competition as we know it today. She also shares the stories of such great Olympic partnerships as Mark Todd and Charisma, Hans Gunter Winkler and Halla, and Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt. In addition, Bryant discusses how the Games are organized, teams selected, and horses transported.

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Part 1 The dressage competition is a test of the ability of rider and horse and rider to precisely execute various gaits and movements. There is no jumping in dressage. The second of the three Olympic competitions, jumping, is perhaps the best known in the US and was practiced widely in the US prior to the Olympic games. In the Olympic jumping competition, also know as the Prix de Nations (Prize of the Nations), the rider follows a prescribed course within an enclosed stadium, jumping artificial obstacles.
Captain Guy V. Henry on Chiswell (Gruenther) Because of his European experience, Captain Henry knew that his Army issued mounts would not be able to challenge the precisely bred European horses. He determined that the key to winning was superb conditioning of the horses, and even more important, accurate riding of the three day event. The team trained rigorously through the late winter and into the early summer of 1912, despite being handicapped by their late start, the severe winter conditions at Fort Riley, a time limitation of one and a half hours a day of riding hall use, and by the fact that three of its members, Captain Henry included, were required to continue their usual military duties as they prepared.
The 1912 Military Bronze Medal Team
Benjamin Lear on Poppy , John Montgomery on Deceive , and Guy Henry on Chiswell
In 1924 at the Paris Olympics the US team followed much the same pattern as in Antwerp. Major Sloan Doak riding Pathfinder picked up an individual bronze medal in eventing, but the team, which was positioned for a silver, was eliminated due to a miscue on the course. The 1928 games in Amsterdam were again a story of close but unhappy out-comes for the Americans. The eventing team once again positioned for silver but was eliminated because of a course error. Thus, for three efforts in he 1920s the US was able to produce only a single bronze individual medal.

An Overview
The Ancient Olympic Games
The Ancient Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece beginning in 776 B.C. These ancient games were held every four years for almost 1200 years.
The Modern Olympic Games
Inspired by the Ancient Games, the Modern Olympic Games were first held in 1896. There were 245 athletes (all men) competing in 43 events. These Modern Olympic Games were inspired by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and did not include any equestrian sports. Equestrian Events were not added as a full status sport until 1912. In 1912, 27 starters from 7 nations competed in each of three Equestrian Events, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping, over a 5-day period of time. For the first half-century of Olympic Competition equestrian sports were solely represented by the military.
The Dressage Event
The art of Dressage is often compared to the ballet. A rider must execute precise maneuvers with a high degree of accuracy on a very fit horse. The judges evaluate not only the horse's performance, but the rider's ability to communicate with his or her mount. The more skillful the rider the less obvious his instructions to the horse will be.
The Three Day Event
This portion of the Olympic Competition is the most challenging, and traditionally has been the United States strongest event. It is designed to be a grueling test of both the horse and rider. The Three Day Event is patterned to highlight the qualities of a premium military mount, the horse must be responsive, obedient, bold, and athletic, with enormous physical and mental stamina. As its name indicates, this event consists of three phases, they are Dressage, Cross-country and Obstacle course, and Stadium Jumping.

Lieutenant Tommy Thomson on Jenny Camp
Finishing the Cross Country Course enroute to a Silver Individual and Gold Team Medal (USET)
Captain Thomson and Jenny Camp were toward the rear of the starting order and by the time of their start the pond had unhorsed dozens of riders. The word was filtering back not to jump to the right. With this insight Thomson and Jenny jumped to the left, stumbled slightly, but made it through with no faults. They completed the course without serious problems. All totaled, only fifteen of forty-eight horses negotiated the number four obstacle with no difficulty. Twenty-eight horses fell, and three refused to jump at all. The obstacle injured three horses so badly they had to be destroyed while dozens of others lost confidence or at a minimum lost time on the course due to the experience. One rider had to chase his horse for several miles before mounting and continuing on.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-September 20, 2000-David O'Connor of The Plains, VA scored 29.0 penalties in the opening dressage phase of the individual eventing competition, taking the lead with the best score in Olympic history. O'Connor impressed the judges and amazed the crowd with his ride on his veteran partner, Custom Made, a 15-year-old, Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Xandari us, LLC. His ride was accurate and precise with good cadence throughout and rese arch indicated that his score was the best ever achieved in an Olympic eventing dressage test. "He was just beautiful to ride today," said O'Connor who just the day before made Olympic history by sharing an Olympic medal (eventing team Bronze) with his wife for the second time. "When he floats like that, he's so enjoyable to ride. "This has been coming for about six months; he's been getting stronger and every one has done a great job. Today he felt good in his mind and he was good in his body. He's really quite special when he comes together like that."

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History EQUESTRIAN Equestrian events have a unique place in Olympic sport - they are the only events where humans are teamed with animals. It is also the only Olympic sport that pits men and women against each other as absolute equals. The Olympic history of events involving horses can be traced back to 682 BC, when a four-horse chariot race was run at the Hippodrome in Olympia at Greece's 25th Olympiad. In the modern era, show jumping was part of the 1900 Games, but the full program of dressage, show jumping and three-day eventing was introduced in 1912 and in all three disciplines, individual and team medals are awarded. Each of these disciplines has its own unique history. Dressage has its origins in the French military. It began as a method of training for military horses. Indeed, only commissioned officers were allowed to compete in equestrian events until 1952 when the sport was opened to civilians, including women for the first time. The sport has also been described as horses performing ballet.
