I don't know what it is about pirated cds and steam rollers Maybe it makes a good grandstanding display for the media. Crushing the contraband with 50 tons of vibrating steel is enough to grab anyones attention I suppose. One of the sellers said the CDs were imported from neighboring Colombia, and that the main market is in the port city of Guayaquil, 275 kilometers (171 miles) southwest of the capital Quito. Quito Chamber of Commerce President Blasco Penaherrera said about 25 million blank CDs were shipped to Ecuador in the last year and most were used to make illegal copies. Surprisingly, the street vendors that had these warez confiscated, are so bold that they protested this event and were on site to voice their objections! The government is not being swayed however, 80,000 additional discs will soon be destroyed as well. Now, if they could just get the other 24 million 860 thousand discs, they could really flatten the black market. In defense of the legitimate vendors, assuming there are any still in business, the copies of films were being peddled for 1.50 US. Whereas a legitimate DVD movie runs around 30 dollars. With this sort of pricing disparity, it's going to be a difficult situation to control.

I digressreturning to the miracle that nature does not intervene nowadays in the interests of common humanity, justness and fairness-NATURE IS THE CRUELLEST OF KILLERS Wild, self combustible fires burn animals alive all as part of evolutionary regeneration. Injury or illness can cause lingering death Hunger and starvation are part of bature`s dynamicPredators show no mercy in the conduct of animal life LET US NOT BEHAVE AS BADLY AS NATURE DOES I have stressed the obvious and indisputable, Let us considerthe observations of Swaminthan S.Anllearia Alya Nature is elitist and anti welfare .It favours the strong over the weak and handicapped. How ironic that so many scintists have become nature lovers. - But the warm current during El Nino also brought more rainfall and that helped all land species on the Island to thrive. Vegetation flourished. There was more water and biomass for all land-based creatures and their population boomed. -But nature is capricious and El Nino typically lasts only a rear. Having killed thousands of animals it sneaks away and the cold current returns. This is a boon for the sealions and the pelicans, whose population once again begins to soar . But the decline in rainfall means there is suddenly a decline in rainfall to support the population explosion caused by El Nino. Land creatures begin to die in droves . That is nature`s way of creating an ecological balance.

The Index of Leading Environmental Indicators
The 1999 Index of Leading Environmental Indicators is a citizen's guide on environmental quality in the U.S., which is demonstrating that contrary to popular belief, U.S. environmental quality is often improving, not worsening. While individual problems should obviously be taken seriously, data from government sources show that technological innovation and economic growth throughout this century has led to continuous environmental improvement in many areas. These improvements chronicle what was termed the "wealth effect" of a growing economy on the environment. As the U.S. economy grows, so does its ability to control pollution and protect its resources. Economic growth also means improved technology and, therefore, more efficient uses of raw materials and natural resources. This growth, combined with a growing consumer preference for a clean environment, has led to environmental improvements throughout the country.
The 1999 Index tries to help the average citizen form an opinion about the environment and about environmental policy. Besides government data sets collected over the past 20 years, this Index took a long-term look at environmental trends in order to determine the true cause of improvements more accurately. Ironically, people today express a great deal of pessimism and anxiety about the environment. Yet fears about environmental degradation in the U.S. can often be unfounded, as evidenced by the following Index facts:

Equador Halts Food Aid Program due to GM content
EFE News Service 18may01
Quito , May 17 - The Ecuadorian government on Thursday suspended a nutritional program that provides food for poor children and mothers sponsored by the United Nation's World Food Program (WFP) due to the possibility that genetically engineered soybeans were among some of the food products' ingredients. Authorities will not suspend the food deliveries, but they will eliminate two nutrition programs aimed at children because of the possibility of genetically engineered soybeans, Radio Quito reported. The government will make up the foot shortfall caused by the suspension of the two plans by handing out other products free of any genetically engineered ingredients. WFP representative in Ecuador Hannah Laufer said that food provided by the two nutritional programs could contain genetically engineered soybeans. These programs were aimed at children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, with the objective of counteracting the malnutrition and infantile growth deficiency prevalent in Ecuador's poor areas. Accion Ecologica, one of Ecuador's most prominent environmental organizations, said that 55 percent of the ingredients used in the State's nutrition programs contain genetically engineered products, especially soybeans.

MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: Re: Equador's government Hi girls. Ecuador (spelled with a "C") is a republic. They vote for their president. Many of the people there are natives who are illiterate and very poor. They will vote for anyone who promises money or services for the poor people. Most of these promises are never kept, they are just said to get votes. Ecuador has had 20 or 30 different constitutions in the past years and they are working on another new one right now. The last president they had was removed by the people and he ran away with $50,000,000 of profits from the sale of oil. The government doesnt have enough control, they cant enforce the laws they make. They seem to have military bases all over the place. They also have many military men with rifles in banks, hotels, supermarkets and other public places for security. Also they have road blocks to check the vehicles. This was a little scary for me. Some of these guys with these big rifles looked like they were about 14 years old. They have no traffic laws, you can drive as fast as you want and the roads are in bad shape so its dangerous.

Geography: Ecuador is bounded to the north by Colombia, to the east and south by Peru, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. There are three distinct zones: the Sierra or uplands of the Andes, running from the Colombian border in the north to Peru in the south, of which there are two main ranges, the Eastern and Western Cordilleras (divided by a long valley); the Costa, a coastal plain between the Andes and the Pacific with plantations of bananas, cacao, coffee and sugar; and the Oriente, the upper Amazon basin to the east, consisting of tropical jungles threaded by rivers. The latter, although comprising 36 per cent of Ecuador's land area, contains only 3 per cent of the population. Colonisation is, however, increasing in the wake of the oil boom.

Gleaner Poll Scapegoats Politicians
Both ministers are not sitting on their hands, but have mounted a wide array of innovative and comprehensive programs. But, these days it has become acceptable if not fashionable to stereotype and scapegoat politicians. This scapegoating of politicians is destructive and has made the important valuable job of representing the people an undesirable one. According to the "poll" the public is clamoring for "good efficient" politicians, especially from the vaunted private sector. With a hatchet job like this, alarmingly typical of the press and so many others, why on earth would these "good efficient" deliverers from the private sector want to put their heads on this chopping block of Jamaican politics? Nope this narrow-minded journalism will not bring in better politicians, but keep them the hell out in the nice comfy moneymaking private sector. All over the Caribbean, the press is fighting with governments. That is nothing but a distraction as Caribbean countries are in real crisis. In these times, there has to be a new and more responsible journalism. It should inform rather than inflame. Selling newspapers is just not enough, but it has to be a positive force in the healing, unifying and rebuilding of the nation.

Ecuador is not a fully federal state but has a devolved system of 21 provinces, including the Galápagos Islands, each administered by an appointed governor. The 1979 constitution provides for a president and a single-chamber national congress, the 77-member chamber of representatives, to which 65 representatives are elected on a provincial basis every two years and 12 nationally for a four-year term. The president is elected by universal suffrage for a four-year, nonrenewable term.
