The Guardian 's 2003 University Guide rates UEA's philosophy teaching 7th out of 39 universities surveyed, and ahead of a number of prestigious - and much larger - departments. See here for details of the survey and associated tables. Higher degrees by research (MPhil and PhD) are offered. A taught MA in Social Philosophy has been running since 1997. Philosophy is also a major contributor to the School's other taught MA programmes in Social and Political Theory, PPE and International Relations. There has been a flourishing faculty-run Philosophy Society since 1965, and the students also run their own philosophical society. Interdisciplinary seminar series for faculty and both graduate and undergraduate students are a regular feature of the School, as well as regular weekly evening meetings of the Philosophy Reading Group. The East Anglia Philosophy Triangle, which takes place twice a year, provides a meeting point at which philosophers from UEA, Cambridge and Essex give papers and exchange views in relaxed weekend meetings.

EPISTEMOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY AND PEDAGOGY OF MATHEMATICS Leone Burton The model proved to be remarkably robust when matched with how the seventy mathematicians talked about mathematics. But in analysing the very large data base, it became clear to me that I had to distinguish between the mathematicians' beliefs, that is what they think mathematics is, their practices, that is how they approach their research, and the seductive nature of their social positioning into what everybody knows . Finally, although I had not set out to discuss teaching and learning with them, inevitably there were aspects of our conversations which provided data on how they understand their roles as teachers and as learners and the data contain a lot of material which can be interpreted (with all the caveats necessary to that) to throw light on the links between epistemology and pedagogy. Mathematicians' beliefs I began the study with a conjecture that the socio-cultural system producing mathematicians is far stronger than differences in sex. I expected to find a high degree of convergence in the beliefs of the mathematicians I interviewed about the nature of the discipline. In fact, what I found was both. Great heterogeneity was disclosed in the many different beliefs about coming to know mathematics, including some, a minority of about 10%, who did not adopt an objectivist, positivist stance. Sex did not seem to feature as relevant to these differences. At the same time, whether espousing Platonism or formalism, there was a uniform philosophical commitment to an absolutist view of mathematical knowledge as fixed, certain and a-personal, a view of mathematics without the 's'. So, within this philosophical homogeneity, the mathematicians to whom I spoke adopted a breadth and diversity of epistemological positions. Some female participants said:

    Undergraduate Program
    MAJOR
Philosophy poses general questions concerning reality, knowledge, reasoning, language, and conduct. Frequently asked philosophical questions include: What is the ultimate nature of reality? What really exists and what is mere appearance? What, if anything, can be known, and how? What are the principles of correct reasoning? What is moral value? And what moral values should we adopt? Undergraduate courses in philosophy are designed to impart knowledge about these fundamental issues and main developments in analytic philosophy while strengthening students' logical and analytical skills. A major in philosophy develops abilities useful for graduate or professional work in many fields and for any situation requiring clear, systematic thinking. A major in philosophy requires at least 48 semester hours of coursework in philosophy including: (1) Background courses: Logic (3 cr), Metaphysics (3 cr), Epistemology (3 cr), Ethics (3 cr), Introduction to Philosophy (3 cr) and Critical Thinking (3 cr). Students must take all these courses.

    Course Description
This course will be a survey of central issues in contemporary epistemology. We will start by considering skeptical arguments that we can't really know whether the world is the way it appears to us. Perhaps things only appear the way they do because we're wired up to computers which are force-feeding us the experiences we have. If so, then all we can really know about are our own private thoughts and experiences. Considering these skeptical arguments will take us into questions like the following: Does knowledge always have to be based on secure foundations? If you know something, will you always know that you know it? Will you always be able to prove that you know it? Does "knowledge" mean the same in the philosophy classroom as it does in ordinary settings? What are the connections between knowledge and evidence? and so on. The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30, in Carl Icahn Lab Room 101 We will also have weekly discussion sections. They're tentatively scheduled for Wednesdays at 3:30, and Thursdays at 3:30. (Get in touch with us ASAP if you can't make either of these times.) We'll announce the meeting rooms soon.
