Epistemology
What is Epistemology?
Epistemology is the study of our method of acquiring knowledge . It answers the question, "How do we know?" It encompasses the nature of concepts , the constructing of concepts, the validity of the senses, logical reasoning , as well as thoughts, ideas, memories, emotions , and all things mental . It is concerned with how our minds are related to reality, and whether these relationships are valid or invalid.
Why is Epistemology important?
Epistemology is the explanation of how we think. It is required in order to be able to determine the true from the false, by determining a proper method of evaluation. It is needed in order to use and obtain knowledge of the world around us. Without epistemology, we could not think. More specifically, we would have no reason to believe our thinking was productive or correct, as opposed to random images flashing before our mind. With an incorrect epistemology , we would not be able to distinguish truth from error. The consequences are obvious. The degree to which our epistemology is correct is the degree to which we could understand reality, and the degree to which we could use that knowledge to promote our lives and goals. Flaws in epistemology will make it harder to accomplish anything.
What are the key elements of a proper Epistemology?

74. Trancendental
Summary of the Transcendental Aesthetic and Transcendental Logic, as put forth in the Critique of Pure Reason.
http://www.london-oratory.org/philosophy/philosophies/epistemology/trancendental
source IEP With Kant's claim that the mind of the knower makes an active contribution to experience of objects before us, we are in a better position to understand transcendental idealism. Kant's arguments are designed to show the limitations of our knowledge. The Rationalists believed that we could possess metaphysical knowledge about God, souls, substance, and so; they believed such knowledge was transcendentally real. Kant argues, however, that we cannot have knowledge of the realm beyond the empirical. That is, transcendental knowledge is ideal, not real, for minds like ours. Kant identifies two a priori sources of these constraints. The mind has a receptive capacity, or the sensibility, and the mind possesses a conceptual capacity, or the understanding.
Another way to understand Kant's point here is that it is impossible for us to have any experience of objects that are not in time and space. Furthermore, space and time themselves cannot be perceived directly, so they must be the form by which experience of objects is had. A consciousness that apprehends objects directly, as they are in themselves and not by means of space and time, is possibleGod, Kant says, has a purely intuitive consciousnessbut our apprehension of objects is always mediated by the conditions of sensibility. Any discursive or concept using consciousness (A 230/B 283) like ours must apprehend objects as occupying a region of space and persisting for some duration of time.

Epistemology
PETER D. KLEIN
Epistemology
Epistemology is one of the core areas of philosophy. It is concerned with the nature, sources and limits of knowledge (see Knowledge, concept of ). There is a vast array of views about those topics, but one virtually universal presupposition is that knowledge is true belief, but not mere true belief (see Belief and knowledge ). For example, lucky guesses or true beliefs resulting from wishful thinking are not knowledge. Thus, a central question in epistemology is: what must be added to true beliefs to convert them into knowledge?
1 The normative answers: foundationalism and coherentism
The historically dominant tradition in epistemology answers that question by claiming that it is the quality of the reasons for our beliefs that converts true beliefs into knowledge (see Epistemology, history of ). When the reasons are sufficiently cogent, we have knowledge (see Rational beliefs ). This is the normative tradition in epistemology (see Normative epistemology ). An analogy with ethics is useful: just as an action is justified when ethical principles sanction its performance, a belief is justified when epistemic principles sanction accepting it (see Justification, epistemic

About Us A - Z Site Map Top Pages ... Cell Phones See also: Humanities Logic Philosophy of Science Books ... Books Philosophy is the critical study of the most fundamental questions that humankind has been able to ask. Philosophy asks what is the nature of reality? Do our perceptions of reality match the actual reality that is "out there"? What does it mean to think, to have a mind? How can we know that other minds (i.e. other thinking beings) actually exist? Is there a difference between right and wrong, and if so, how can prove this? How do we define rules that allow us to apply theoretical ideas of right and wrong in practical situations? What do we mean by the word "God"? Does God exist? Philosophy studies such concepts as existence, goodness, knowledge, and beauty. It asks "Is knowledge possible, and if so "What is knowledge?" Philosophy is the critical, speculative or analytical study of any of these topics.

Books Epistemology , the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of knowledge and truth, encompasses the study of the origin, nature, and limits of human knowledge. People approach this task in various ways; the following categories originally reflected divisions among schools of philosophy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but may prove useful in categorizing certain approximate trends throughout the history of epistemology:
  • (1) Rationalists believe there are innate ideas that are not found in experience. These ideas exist independently of any experience we may have. They may in some way derive from the structure of the human mind, or they may exist independently of the mind. If they exist independently, they may be understood by a human mind once it reaches a necessary degree of sophistication.

Philosophy of Mind: A Functionalist Primer
An excerpt from the online hypertext Human Knowledge: Foundations and Limits Philosophy Of Mind : the study of the faculty for thinking and knowing.
  • Essence of Mind Accidence of Mind Relations of Mind
  • Minds and ideas, like all of reality , consist ultimately of matter . Mental states are functional states consisting of causal relations among components for processing information. Theories of Mind Philosophers often divide all phenomena into three kinds:
    • mind (or spirit or soul): that which can think and perceive; ideas (or universals or forms): that which can be thought; and matter (or substance): that which can be perceived.
Human theories of mind differ according to how they explain these phenomena in general and the Mind-Body Problem in particular. The Mind-Body Problem is the problem of explaining how mindless unconscious matter can give rise to or interact with mind and consciousness . Human theories of mind include:
    • Idealism is the thesis that reality consists ultimately of mind and ideas rather than matter. Dualism is the thesis that reality consists ultimately of both the material or physical and the ideal or mental.
